This group is primarily for people over 40. To encourage commitment, there is a small fee for your first three events only. At first, it may just be the two of us, until more people join the group. Once you've signed up, we'll arrange a time and choose a pub or park that works for both of us. See you soon!

Weekend afternoon open jam (Free) + social | 23rd Aug 3pm, Vortex downstairs

Afternoon jam and performances, free and open to a public audience and participants. Anyone at any skill level can join in to play (or sing) - mostly jazz standards. There is no fixed repertoire, and what is played depends on what everyone calls - please put your name and instrument (or vocals) down on the sign up sheet, which will usually be on the downstairs bar. Earlier arrivals will usually be asked to play first, so you may wish to plan to come early. The house band will also play a couple of songs throughout the afternoon, including from the [future standards](https://www.vortexjazz.co.uk/event/future-standards-3-2024-04-14-2024-05-12-2024-06-09-2024-08-03/2024-09-22/) repertoire - which everyone is also encouraged to call. Contact me for sheet music. There will also be a possible break for a 30 minute novice+, improver or intermediate set. Many people also come to the open jam, who are looking to join a novice+ or intermediate rehearsal for the first time, so I can get a sense of your playing first. Go Ape!! Treetop Challenge @ Cockfosters

Go Ape is Finally here! This is an outdoor adventure which runs tree top ropes courses. You are FULLY equipped with a harness, ropes and a safety briefing before you start and given a practice ground-level experience before you're let loose to roam the treetops. There is staff nearby to assist if required. You don't need to be strong and muscle-ripped, as long as you can pull yourself a long a rope, you'll be fine. **Location** This will be at the Cockfosters Location, which is the London location most secluded in nature, feeling like you are in the middle of a forest whilst being not too far from the tube station. This course is great for guiding you in as it starts low and builds up. Let's Do Salsa and Bachata Classes!! (2 Hours of Lessons & 1 Hour Social Dance)

Salsa Classes are finally here! We will be going as a group and doing it in style with a 1 hour Salsa (Cross Body) class followed by 1 hour Bachata Class. Both of these are the most popular latin dances in the world and now will be your chance to learn them. For the final hour there will be a social dance, where you are free to dance as you wish. **Class Levels** There will be 2 rooms one for levels 1 & 3, and one for levels 2 & 4. Majority of our group will be at level 1. To fit within the time, likely plan for either short renditions of all 4 songs, or longer versions of 2-3 tunes. The group should collaboratively work on the overall sound of the ensemble, which songs go in the 20 minute set, and other details such as how to start/end tunes and particular arrangements. There will not be an assigned lead for the group. Note: ensure you've practised these songs before the session. This includes confidently playing the head if you are playing lead instrument, common motifs for comping instruments and any specific bass lines or rhythms. Listen to a few versions of each song. Ideally be able to play the melody even if you're on guitar or piano. Attendees would be expected to be comfortable playing at a novice session first before signing up. See below for this week's setlist. Location: Vortex downstairs & upstairs The instruments are limited to up to: 1 drummer, 1 bass, 1 keys, 1 guitar, 3 lead instruments. The top of the description will indicate if there is an available slot for your instrument. Playing the melody, or "head" - the responsibility is shared between horns players (e.g. sax, trumpet), guitar and piano. Feel free to discuss among the group before each song - different parts of the head or the starting / ending heads can be played by different players. Drummers: please bring cymbals (none available for rental) and hi hat clutch **Vocalists** singers very welcome though usually I suggest you come to the intermediate sessions where you can pick your own song and key (as chances are many of the above are not in the right key for your range) **Cancellation policy** Payment by bank transfer for both sessions. No refund will be provided if you can no longer make either of the sessions.
