5.5 Mile Flushing Meadows Hike

This time we'll be going out to to Flushing Meadows Park, the site of the 1964-1965 World's Fair. We'll meet on the boardwalk 100 feet south of the "7" subway station at Mets-Willets Point (Citi Field), except rather than going north toward Citi Field, go south 100 feet on the boardwalk. ***Wear waterproof shoes or boots!!!*** There are always a lot of puddles & mud on the west side of the lake. The boardwalk is not visible on the street Google map, but it's very visible on the satellite google map, and labelled as the "Flushing Meadows Pedestrian Bridge". We will meet closer to the "7" train station than to the LIRR station. The boardwalk is about 60 feet wide where we will meet, next to the west railing, and I look like my picture. We'll walk the length of the Flushing Meadows Park and back, around the lake, then through to outside the Queens Botanical Gardens (which is fenced off), then to Main Street Flushing where we will eat dinner at a Chinese restaurant that has agreed to do separate checks. We'll be arriving at the restaurant at about 7:00pm (sunset will be at 7:53pm). ***BRING CASH FOR DINNER!!!*** The restaurant has a $20 credit card minimum, and it's cheap -- dinner with a beer may be less than that (though there's been a lot of inflation lately, so it may be more). There will be no vaccine requirement for the hike or to eat dinner with us. From the restaurant it's just another several blocks up Main St to Roosevelt Avenue and the "7" train home. Note that it's a Hunan restaurant, and most, though not all, of the dishes are spicy, and when they say "spicy", they really mean it. Spicy dishes are marked as such on the menu. Up the Hudson to BBQ Blues Festival @ Pier 76

**WHAT** Join us for a 5-mile, moderate-paced walk up the Hudson River to Hudson River Park's annual BBQ Blues Festival @ Pier 76. Entry to the festival's live music is free. Food (*including vegan BBQ*) and beverages will be available for purchase. **MEET** 11:00 am in front of the Staten Island Ferry Terminal. There are restrooms inside the terminal on the 2nd floor. If you're late, message a leader and meet the group at either Pier 57 or Pier 76. If you can't make the walk, you can still come to Pier 76 as your schedule allows and enjoy the music and BBQ. We'll walk up the Hudson River, stopping at the Pier 57 rooftop park (14th St) for views and restrooms. Bannerman Castle, is an iconic Hudson River. Millionaire Francis Bannerman bought Pollepel Island in 1900 and started building a storehouse for his Military munitions. Urban Athletics: NYC at Night Bike Ride

New York is a completely different city after dark. During the day, people are out riding bikes, soaking up the sunshine, and pretending they enjoy paying $8 for coffee. But once the sun goes down, most cyclists tuck their bikes away and head home. That’s like ordering a pizza, throwing away the cheese, and proudly announcing that the crust was the best part. You're missing half the experience. If you're a fellow night owl—or simply someone with questionable sleep habits—come join me for a late-night ride through the city. **The plan...** We'll meet in Union Square and pedal our way around some of New York City's most iconic landmarks. They're impressive during the day, but at night they transform into something even better: beautifully illuminated and, in some cases, suspiciously free of tourists. Our route includes the Washington Square Arch, the Brooklyn Bridge, South Street Seaport, the World Financial Center, Lincoln Center, Columbus Circle, the Plaza Hotel fountain, the glowing Apple cube, the sensory overload that is Times Square, the New York Public Library and its famous stone lions, and the Flatiron Building. We'll also do a loop through Central Park after dark, stopping at Bethesda Fountain and Belvedere Castle—because nothing says “good decision-making” like wandering through a giant park at midnight with a bunch of strangers from the internet. **The important stuff...** * The ride will be about 28 miles round trip at a casual pace of roughly 12 mph. If midnight is normally when you transform back into a pumpkin, this may not be the meetup for you—we'll be out late. * We'll stick to bike lanes whenever possible, but the city planners, in their infinite wisdom, neglected to place protected lanes directly in front of every famous attraction. You should be comfortable riding in traffic. Helmets and bike lights are absolutely required, both for safety and to improve your odds of being seen by taxis. * Please make sure your bike is in good working order before the meetup. Bring a lock, a spare tube, a patch kit, and a pump. New York has many wonderful qualities, but fixing your flat at 1:00 a.m. on the side of the road is not one of them. * Check your email before heading out for any last-minute updates and my phone number, which will be sent to everyone who RSVPs. * And speaking of RSVPs: please only sign up if you genuinely plan to come. Space is limited, and "I totally meant to make it" sadly does not propel a bicycle. Serial no-shows and last-minute cancellers may be removed from the event. * Sorry, no guests for this one. * Rain cancels the meetup, because while we enjoy adventure, recreating scenes from The Dark Knight on two wheels is a bridge too far.

Saturday Aug 15th Forest Park Hike.

FROM WALLENBERG SQUARE !!! Werner and Jerry will lead this hike \*\*\* CHECK HERE BEFORE GOING \*\*\* RAIN Will CANCEL HIKE.\*\*\* Meet time is 10:30AM, hike start is 10:45AM. Duration is about 2 hours + or - a few minutes. We will hike along several of the many trails in the woods. Wear heavy shoes or boots as the trails are rocky and have many tree roots. Distance is a about 4 miles plus or minus a bit. RAIN WILL CANCEL EVENT!!!!! Attendance is at your own risk, and by joining, you agree to hold us not responsible for any accidents, injuries, losses or unforeseen problems that may arise. This includes contamination by any germs, viruses, or any other illnesses. If the grouping, numbers of attendees and distances get too close, we will break into two separate groups. This should satisfy any limitations on numbers of hikers and distancing. The hike is free ,but we would like to ask for a voluntary donation of whatever you want, or one $ 1 or $2 to help cover the fee Meetup charges us to use their website.
