Drawing the Breath: Breath, Movement & Drawing with Art Therapist Alyssa Gursky

Your breath can leave a trace. In this workshop you draw it: the mark moves one way on the in-breath and another on the out-breath, in white and colored soft pastels on big sheets of black paper. The point is the process, not the picture. We start with a short orientation to the art-making from Alyssa, then a gentle body-mind practice from me. Then three rounds of drawing: your breath as it is, your breath as you choose to shape it, and a shared rhythm. We close by looking at what we made, and with a guided rest. Marginalia Literary Salon 003 | The Picture of Dorian Gray

*What happens when beauty becomes something to live by?* For Salon 003, Marginalia turns to Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray. A decadent, provocative novel about art, influence, desire, and the dangerous distance between the self we present to the world and the one that exists beneath it. **What is the book about?** First published in 1890 and later revised and expanded by Wilde, the novel emerged from the worlds of Aestheticism and Decadence, where questions about beauty and art collided with Victorian ideas of morality, respectability, and desire. More than a century later, its questions feel remarkably alive: Does beauty change what we allow people to get away with? How much responsibility do we bear for the people who influence us? Can we treat a life as a work of art? And does art have any obligation to make us better? Together, we’ll follow those questions wherever they lead…from portraiture, pleasure, and self-invention to influence, secrecy, morality, and the uneasy relationship between art and life. **Any requirements?** No literary background is needed. Come having read the book, and bring whatever stayed with you: annotations, questions, disagreements, favorite passages, or simply an idea you can’t quite shake. Any complete edition is welcome. Fundamentals of Atelier Methods (4 sessions)

**Class Dates:** October 31, November 7, 14 & 21 In this practical course, you’ll learn the concepts, skills, and principles of an atelier approach to drawing. This will give you the foundation to make realistic drawings from life with rounded, 3D shading. Our instructor, Tim Dosé, will guide you through the steps to make a beautiful, finished drawing of a simple still life from life. Each class will include a brief lecture, demo, and critique. **Week 1 - Thumbnail & Block-In** **Week 2 - Value Study** **Week 3 - Modeling the Light** **Week 4 - Modeling the Shadows** **Materials:** * Strathmore 400 drawing paper pad, medium surface - 9x12” or 11x14” * Range of artist’s drawing pencils - at least 2B, HB, H, 2H, 4H. Introduction to Drawing for Beginners (3 Sessions) with Simon

Do not worry if you don’t know how to draw. This class is specifically designed for you. This class is for you even if you have drawn a bit but want an organized approach to drawing to speed up the learning process and prevent wasted and frustrating efforts. **CLASS SCHEDULE:** Tuesdays, November 10, 17, & 24 - 6:30-9pm The ticket price includes all three dates. Students will learn the fundamentals of drawing, including paper and pencil basics, how to use shape and form to create depth, measuring and proportion, and rendering form with shade. What we will cover: Session One: We will learn how to draw the 3-dimensional world on a 2-dimensional surface using and enhancing basic forms. Session Two: We will learn how to use proportion in our drawings while adding a more thoughtful approach to our pencil abilities. Session Three: We will learn shading concepts and create a well-formed, proportioned, shaded drawing. Paper: We will examine the difference between Sketch and Drawing paper, smooth and rough surfaces, and those designed for pencils vs. charcoal.
