Get a chance to meet our founder, Sandra Gonzalez, and some of the fellows who graduated from The Responsible Design for Change Fellowship. This is a very lovely opportunity to connect with nature and our community. You are welcome to bring your pet and/or your children. Everyone is very welcome to join us for tea and cake and the church service, which runs every Sunday. Hope you can join us! *PLEASE NOTE that this is NOT the English class.* The English class runs during the term: and classes are posted as separate Meetup events. Please sign up for the classes on the relevant Meetup. The classes run from 2:30 pm - 3:45pm. --- What happens in this event? Come and experience a Traditional English Church Service with Live Music and Singing. Enjoy Tea and coffee after the Church service. You will meet a friendly local community. Make friends from all over the world, people from diverse backgrounds and stages of life. What happens during the church service? You do not need to do anything, apart from sit, listen and observe. It is a great way to improve your listening skills and also to learn about what Christianity says about life and why we think it might be relevant. You will listen to live singing, prayer, a Bible reading, and hear a talk from someone explaining it. You are welcome to join at any time and leave before the service finishes if you do not feel you can stay. You will have time after the service to talk to us either about what you have heard or just anything you'd like to talk about, over a cup of tea or coffee and there is usually also a lot of cakes or snacks! We will be writing Christmas cards with warm festive messages to elderly people in residential care homes. It is a sad reality that many people in residential care do not receive regular visits — a problem that hits them even harder at Christmas. This small act of kindness can help them to not feel as lonely during the Christmas period. Join us, and send some smiles across the miles to those who need them most. I’ll provide the Xmas cards and all the writing material you will need to brighten someone’s day. All you need to bring is your wonderful self! \*\*\* Our first meeting in a second venue to allow more people to take part in our group \*\*\* NOTE: the pub does not charge for our space on the understanding that we all purchase something from the bar. Please support them. **Please arrive in time for a prompt start at 7:30.** We’ll inevitably spend some time exploring what distinguishes “art” from anything else. But most of our discussion will focus on the ways in which art can be beneficial to both the consumer and the creator. We’ll take a fairly broad interpretation of "the arts", including music, literature and other forms of creativity, in addition to the sorts of things you see in art galleries. (Hence my use of “consumer” instead of “viewer”/”listener”/”reader”). Some questions we might consider… * To what extent does “art” need to be pleasing to the consumer? * If not “pleasing”, what else draws people to experience it? * To what extent should art challenge us to think, or see the world differently? How does this vary across different art forms? * In what ways is being creative for its own sake, beneficial? * In what ways is expressing feelings through art a form of therapy? * What distinguishes works produced primarily to benefit the creator from works produced primarily to benefit the consumer? Who judges? On what basis? * “Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist” is a quote attributed to Picasso. What did he mean? Was he right? Is “art” a licence to break rules? How healthy is that – for creators and consumers? * Marc Chagall, an early 20C painter said “If I create from the heart, nearly everything works; if from the head, almost nothing.” To what extent does successful creation and consumption of art rely on an emotional component / a rational component? * To what extent does a consumer need to understand the creator's intent in order to benefit from a work of art? * What effort does the consumer have to make to fully benefit from the art they consume? How does this vary across different art forms? * To what extent is the act of physically going to a gallery/concert/theatre… more beneficial than seeing photos of pictures in a book / listening to music at home / watching a play on TV etc.? * In what ways do the benefits of creating differ from the benefits of consuming? Hi Balancers, We believe community is about more than meeting new people. It's also about showing up for those who need support. As part of our ongoing partnership with Refugee Community Kitchen, we're inviting you to join us for a different kind of volunteering session. This time, we’re joining **Refugee Community Kitchen (RCK)** at their Goodge Street service to provide essential clothing to people who need it. 👕 **HOW IT WORKS** We’ll meet at **6:00 PM in front of the Dominion Theatre**. From there, we’ll cross the road to Primark and split into small groups. Each group will be given a few essential clothing items to find and buy. Once we’re done, we’ll walk about **5 minutes to Goodge Street**, join the RCK service and distribute the clothing while their team serves food. 💷 **CHIPPING IN** We’ll collect contributions from the group and use the full amount to buy the clothing that evening. If you can, **bring some cash** — but there’s absolutely no pressure to contribute much.
