Trash to Treasure Walk on Staten Island

Kiki B., a longtime Shorewalker, licensed tour guide, and Staten Island resident, will lead you through repurposed art, installations, and murals, ending at a community-built pebble-and-cement grotto from the 1930s. We’ll begin at the [Lighthouse Point Fest](https://lighthousemuseum.org/event/international-lighthouse-point-fest-3/) at the [National Lighthouse Museum](https://lighthousemuseum.org) next door to the ferry. A donation of $3 includes the Fest as well as entry to the Lighthouse Museum ($7 option for People's Choice Soup Contest), where you can explore the fascinating history of America’s lighthouses and the people who kept their lights shining. You may see one you know! We’ll pause for lunch at Inspiration Plaza (Minthorne Alley) and hit Bay Street parks. We’ll do a shoreline loop along Front Street to Maker Park and back to Bay for a pause at Ralph’s Ices before ending at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Grotto in Rosebank. Take S78 at Tompkins Ave. (or walk back up to Bay) to ferry. Walking entire route is approx. 7 miles; one way approx. 4 miles. End time approx. 3:30 p.m. but may vary. Option for a post-walk beer at Mariachi Mexican Cantin (Minthorne Alley). PLEASE NOTE: Shorewalkers who prefer a fast walk are advised to look for another walk. *This trip is open to those who have volunteered in 2026 during our public kayaking days. Space is limited - once you join, you will be placed on a waitlist until the host reviews your qualifications.* **Pier i: Intermediate Volunteer Trip - 6 miles total** Let's paddle to Manhattan and land at “Choo Choo Beach”, a small, very rocky landing spot near Pier I. There is a waterfront cafe with outdoor tables where we can grab a quick bite. This landing is tricky. Plastic boats are encouraged. If you choose a non-plastic boat, be prepared to jump out into waist deep water. Wear sturdy water shoes - you will be climbing on wet rocks carrying your boat. **PREREQUISITES TO RSVP:** 1. Volunteered **AT LEAST** 4 shifts in 2026 during our free kayaking days AND 1. Completed at least 2 trainings in 2026 and show full control of your craft AND 1. Completed at least 1 novice trip in which you found it easy to stay toward the front of the group AND 1. You completed our time trial course in under 19 minutes **COME PREPARED:** * Appropriate clothing for water and air temperature. # Meet 11:00 AM - Leave 11:30 AM # Westport Train Station # Metro-North-Westport, # 1 Railroad Pl, Westport, CT 06880, United States The calendar may tell us that our summer is over, but we will attempt to keep the summer spirit alive with a skate along the Fairfield County shoreline! Please roll (or bike) with us along the Connecticut shore from Westport, CT to Fairfield, CT! The route takes us along the waterfront from the Westport train station to the Firehouse Deli in Fairfield for lunch. We can return by the waterfront route or a more direct inland route. Along the way, we will visit Sherwood Island State Park and Fairfield Beach. The route is approximately 18 to 20 miles. If there is time and interest, we can spend some time at Compo Beach when we return to Westport. There is a restaurant at the beach and many other restaurants/bars in downtown Westport for food and refreshments if you want to stay a littler longer after we finish the event. Skaters/Bikers can travel to Westport by the Metro-North Railroad or by car. The 9:02 AM train from Grand Central Station arrives in Westport, CT at 10:18 AM, and the 10:02 AM train arrives at 11:18 AM. The fare is $15.25 each way. Parking is free on Saturday. Elite Trip - Circumnavigation of Manhattan - 31 miles

**We'll paddle around the entire island of Manhattan.** It'll take 10 hours, we'll travel 30+ miles, on 3 rivers, and under 21 bridges! This will be an amazing, yet a very challenging trip. You must be able to paddle at least 3 knots per hour for the 9+ hours. **PREREQUISITES TO RSVP:** 1. volunteered at least 4 shifts in 2026 AND 2. Completed 2 advanced trips in 2026 (or 1 advanced and 2 intermediate ) AND 3. You have proven that you can paddle 1 mile (including turns) in under 15 minutes in the craft you are planning to paddle AND 4. You can self rescue in 90 seconds or less **CRAFT:** * Sit on top - not allowed * Sea Kayak - Level 3 * OC1/OC2 - not allowed. You may join Ke Aloha's circ the same day! * SUP - only if completed 10+ mile round trip in 2025 with us * Surfski - only if completed 10+ mile round trip in 2025 with us **COME PREPARED:** * Clothing appropriate for water temperature. * Change of clothes * Extra layers for when we stop. You will be cold * THREE white waterproof lights. And lots of others if you like! * Water in a reusable bottle. Little Red Lighthouse Celebration: First Day of the Fall Challenge

Join us to celebrate the start of the Shorewalkers Fall Challenge (October 3rd to 18th) and walk with us to the [Little Red Lighthouse Celebration.](https://riversideparknyc.org/event/the-little-red-lighthouse-festival-4/) We'll walk through much of Riverside Park in recognition of the efforts of the Riverside Park Conservancy (RPC). RPC is this year's recipient of the Fall Challenge fees. Meet at the Eleanor Roosevelt statue at the corner of West 72nd Street and Riverside Drive. (Take the #s 1, 2 or 3 train to the 72nd Street Station and walk west towards the Hudson River). We'll meet at 9:15 with a prompt walk start of 9:30. We'll head north along the promenade and wind our way down to the Hudson River and Greenway to the Little Red Lighthouse. We'll stop at a restroom near the start and pass a few others along the way. Please bring hat, sunscreen, water and a snack. We will walk to join the RPC celebration at the Little Red Lighthouse. Please feel free to stay and enjoy the event. We are staffing a Shorewalkers table. You can head out of the park on your own to 181st Street (A Train) to return home. And for those who wish Maureen will lead walkers back to 145th Street to reconnect to the #1 Train. (The return walk to #145th and the #1 train is about 2 miles.)
