Litter Pick - Downham Woodland Walk (SE London)

Join the Eco Around Community for a litter-pick walk in Downham, facilitated by Biljana. Downham Woodland Walk is a local nature reserve and a narrow strip of mostly ancient woodland. It's part of the Green Chain Walk and stretches for about a mile. Rich in flora and fauna, it’s home to old oak and ash trees and a variety of birds. The area is frequently enjoyed by Downham residents and their pets. While maintained by Lewisham Council, contributing to the nature reserve's additional clear-up would be much appreciated. **When:** Saturday, 30 May, from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm **Where:** The litter pick will start at the Moorside Rd entrance to Downham Woodland Walk, and we’ll make our way through to the Oakridge Rd exit near Barnardo’s. Running through the heart of London; the River Thames has played a central role in the history of the city, and when the tide is low, the capital’s longest archaeological site is revealed. Come along on Sunday 24th May to explore its history! **About the foreshore** I will be your guide as we will be going down to the Thames foreshore at low tide, where we will have about 1h 30mins to have a look around for objects before the tide comes in. I will tell you more about foreshore, the industry in the area and will be on hand to identify and date objects you find. Most objects you can spot sitting on the foreshore after being washed in on the tide (its eyes only, we are not allowed to dig or scrape the foreshore surface). You will find everything from bits of pottery, clay pipes, bottles, animal bones to ship items. Most of the things we find are from the Medieval to the Victorian period or you might be lucky and find something Roman or older. **The Thames Foreshore is private land, so before we go down, I have to give everyone a short talk on health & safety on the foreshore.** We will be finished by about 2:45pm. **Footwear** The foreshore is very stoney and sometimes muddy, so please wear sensible shoes (preferably walking boots/shoes or wellington boots). East Head - (16 or 8 miles)

West Wittering is most famous for its sandy beach, and as popular a seaside venue as any within reach of the capital, with everything a visitor can hope for 😎🏖️ 82 years ago, this place was absolutely teeming - however the circumstances then were very different. On the anniversary of the momentous events that began from these shores in 1944, this walk heads to Wittering's memorial. East Head is only a stone's throw from the popular beach; yet must be walked to, which means the unspoiled dunes will be ours. https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/sussex/east-head If Wittering's beach proves too delightful for some, there is a bus that one can catch back to Chichester when the day is done. A couple of options for the return walk. Depending on numbers and logistics, the optimum would be via Bosham's historic harbour. It was from here in 1064 that Harold Godwinson sailed to Normandy, invoking a chain of events destined to culminate two years later. From Harold to Eisenhower, history resonates through these sands. TRAVEL 1\. Take the 9\.05 train from London Victoria to CHICHESTER\.
