Their homestead on Queen Street East was well to the west of the area currently identified as the Beaches. A later generation of the Ashbridge family rebuilt the family home in 1854 and can be seen on Queen Street East opposite the TTC barns near Kingston Road. The Beaches remained a sparely settled community until the end of the 19th century when extension of the Grand Truck Railway, the draining of the northern parts of Ashbridges Bay, and the construction of street car tracks on Queen Street and Kingston Road, opened the area to settlement. From Sunnyside Amusement Park built in 1922 to Scarboro Beach built in 1906, it seemed that Toronto cornered the market on summertime chills and thrills. We had 5 major amusement parks along our waterfront, and two smaller parks, Victoria Park and Munro Park, virtually unknown to Torontonians today, but extremely popular summertime places, years ago as pleasure parks. This walking tour is for all walking levels and fitness skills. Please dress for the season and bring water. And remember to bring your love of history. It begins outside the Beaches Branch of the Toronto Public Library at Queen Street East, and Lee Avenue adjacent to Kew Gardens. The tour ends where we started, back at the library. # 🍂🌊 FALL WALK: TORONTO ISLANDS 🌊🍁 ### Island Paths, Fall Colours & Toronto's Best Urban Escape There is something magical about the Toronto Islands in the fall. Once the summer crowds disappear, the islands become quieter and more peaceful. The changing leaves, crisp air, open green spaces, quiet cottages, and golden light over the water make it one of the best times of year to explore. And then there's the skyline. From the islands, you get some of the best views of Toronto anywhere in the city — especially when the fall colours frame the downtown skyline across the water. Join us for a relaxed fall walk through **Hanlan's Point, Centre Island, and Ward's Island**, enjoying the scenery, fresh air, and great conversation along the way. This is approximately **9 km**, with mostly flat paths and no major hills. Our return ferry will be the **2:45 PM Ward's Island Ferry** back to downtown Toronto. You will play 4s with beach rules but you’ll be playing against Low Int 5s or Mid 4s This event is for those currently playing Low Int 5s and want to transition to Mid Int 4s level and transitioning to playing with beach rules. You should be amongst the strongest players at the Low Int 5s level to play this level. Please note that you must know FULL beach rules. You MUST answer the RSVP question to play this event. Join us for a relaxed walk from **Pioneer Village Station to Finch Station**, travelling through Black Creek Parkland and along the **Finch Recreational Trail**. This is one of our members' favourite walks for a reason. The route is mostly flat and takes us through open fields, wooded areas, and quiet green spaces that feel surprisingly far removed from the city. # 🍂🐦 Fall Walk: Tommy Thompson Park 🌊 ### Wildlife, Lake Views & One of Toronto's Best Fall Walks Looking for a walk that feels like you've left the city without actually leaving Toronto? Join us for a fall walk through **Tommy Thompson Park**, one of Toronto's most unique outdoor spaces. The park is famous for its wildlife and birding, with **more than 300 species recorded**, as well as its beautiful views across Lake Ontario and back toward the Toronto skyline. In the fall, the cooler air and quieter trails make this a particularly nice time to explore the park. We'll follow the trails toward the **lighthouse**, take a break along the way, and then make our way back. It's a **long walk**, but the terrain is generally easy. **Etobicoke Weekend Walks,** **Join us for a casual early autumn walk along the Humber River.** **We’ll meet at Old Mill Station (just outside the main entrance) at 10:00 AM. From there we’ll walk over to Etienne Brulé Park.** **Description:** **Easy casual walk at your own pace along the Humber River. An opportunity to meet new people, exercise and enjoy the fall salmon run. The Humber River ravine is a unique gem to Etobicoke, a great place to visit on a Saturday.** **Route: begin on the East side at Etienne Brulé Park and head North. Cross over to the West trail via the Dundas bridge. Salmons are expected to be swimming upstream. An annual upward migration. We will spend some time to watch at a few spots and then continue with our walk and return back to the starting point. Join us for a relaxed fall walk along the **Gus Harris Trail**, a quiet ravine trail that follows **Taylor-Massey Creek** through Scarborough and East York. This isn't a challenging hike. It's an easy, mostly flat walk through one of Toronto's quieter green spaces, with plenty of time to enjoy the changing leaves, get some fresh air, and meet other people along the way. We'll follow the creek, walk beneath the trees, and take our time enjoying the fall scenery. The goal isn't to race to the end of the trail. **It's to get outside, have some good conversations, and enjoy the company.** ✨ **Fun Fact:** Taylor-Massey Creek takes its name from two prominent Toronto families.
