🌿🌊 TORONTO ISLANDS SUMMER WALK (9KM) 🌊🌿
Sun, Aug 9, 3:00 PM# 🌿🌊 TORONTO ISLANDS SUMMER WALK (9KM) 🌊🌿 ### Island Paths, Skyline Views & Toronto's Best Urban Escape There is something magical about the Toronto Islands. Just minutes from downtown, the noise of the city disappears and is replaced by tree-lined paths, open green spaces, quiet cottages, and some of the best skyline views anywhere in Toronto. It feels like you've escaped the city without ever leaving it. Join us for a relaxed summer walk across the Toronto Islands as we explore **Hanlan's Point, Centre Island, and Ward's Island**, enjoying beautiful scenery, fresh air, and great conversation along the way. The Toronto Islands have a fascinating history. Originally connected to the mainland as a long sandbar peninsula, a powerful storm in 1858 permanently separated the land from Toronto, creating the islands we know today. Over the years they've been home to amusement parks, summer cottages, and the unique island community that still exists today on Ward's Island. This is **not** a formal historical tour. It's a social walk with beautiful scenery, fresh air, and great conversation. 📲 **Don't Forget to join our WhatsApp Group – \[CLICK HERE\!\]\(📲 Join Our WhatsApp Group: Click here to join\)** *** ## 🚶♂️ What We'll Do We'll take the **11:15 AM Hanlan's Point Ferry** to the islands and begin our walk. Our route will take us through: 🌿 Hanlan's Point 🌳 Centre Island 🏡 Ward's Island 📸 Several incredible skyline viewpoints 🌊 Beautiful waterfront pathways We'll stop throughout the walk to enjoy the scenery for a 30mins break, take photos, and experience one of Toronto's most unique parks. Feel free to bring a snack or something small to share during one of our breaks. **Please Note:** Although we'll pass several beaches, we won't be stopping at them during this event. We have a route to follow and a ferry to catch! Instead, we'll enjoy our break at one of the islands' spectacular skyline lookout points, where you can relax, have a snack, and take some amazing photos. If you'd rather spend time at the beach, you're welcome to do so after the walk, but the group won't be waiting as we continue on our planned route. Our return ferry will be the **2:45 PM Ward's Island Ferry** back to downtown Toronto. Expect approximately **3½ to 4 hours** including the ferry rides and breaks. *** ## ☀️ Weather & Expectations This event happens in typical summer weather. The islands are often cooler and breezier than downtown Toronto, so bringing a light sweater is never a bad idea. The only reason we would cancel is because of severe weather or thunderstorms. This is a social walk—not a guided historical tour. I'll share interesting facts along the way, but the focus is enjoying the islands together. *** ## 🧢 Meetup Details **📍 Meetup Location:** **INSIDE the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal after your ticket has been scanned.** We are meeting **inside** the paid waiting area **beside the washrooms**. **Please do NOT wait outside the terminal.** Once your ferry ticket has been scanned, walk into the waiting area and you'll find me beside the washrooms wearing my **Moose Hat**. ⏰ **Meetup Time:** **11:00 AM** 🚢 **Hanlan's Point Ferry LEAVES AT:** **11:15 AM** Once we board the ferry, it is extremely difficult for late arrivals to catch up with the group. 🚢 **Return Ferry:** **2:45 PM from Ward's Island** 🎟️ **Ferry Ticket:** *$9.40* You must purchase your ferry ticket before signing up. Hanlan's Beach Day

Historic Guided Walking Tour of The Beach (Woodbine Beach)
Wed, Aug 19, 10:15 PM**Note: You will also need to obtain your ticket in advance, using the link in the Signing up section, as this new tour may sell out.** On **Wednesday, August 19th**, **join Making Waves at The Beach, a historical guided tour from Heritage Toronto.** Bask in the sunshine at The Beach, once the city’s cottage country where Torontonians escaped for summer fun. With toes in the sand, join us as we stroll along the lakefront of this trendy Toronto neighbourhood defined by four beaches. **Purchase your ticket for Making Waves at The Beach on August 19th.** Before the 1950s,Torontonians took steamers and streetcars to escape the city to this once marshy cottage area in the east end. On this walk, we’ll dive into its history, from the shoreline engineering that created the sandy beach today, to former amusement parks like Scarboro Beach Park known for its star attractions – the Tickler, Tunnel of Love, and Chute-the-Chutes – and as the location of the first public exhibition flights of airplanes in Canada. A playground for city residents, this leisure area featured public parks like Kew Gardens which offered camping, picnicking, and amusements for tourists, and the Balmy Beach Club, a hub for sports like rugby and canoeing which spurred a legacy of athletic excellence. Hidden beneath the water’s surface, we’ll also expose the dark history of the formation of the Swastika Club in the summer of 1933, when a group of Anglo-Canadian Nazi sympathizers harassed and attempted to drive “undesirables” – recent immigrants but mainly Jewish bathers – away from local beaches. A roller coaster ride awaits you on this tour, which was developed and will be led by Heritage Toronto volunteer, Adam Waiser, co-host of the Muddy York Toronto history podcast. He’s just old enough to remember the ban on Sunday shopping and he likes to tell stories about the old Toronto when the Glorious Twelfth was the biggest event of the year and people were appalled by the idea of children using swings on the Lord’s Day. **Prepare for the walk:** * Walking shoes * Hat * Sunglasses * Water Public washrooms are located at Woodbine Beach Park, Kew Gardens, and Balmy Beach Park. ‐‐----‐----‐‐-------------‐----------- **COST:** Tour ticket: $8 + transaction fee ‐‐----‐----‐‐-------------‐----------- **SIGNING-UP** * **RSVP Yes to confirm if you will join for food/ drinks after** * **[Purchase](https://www.heritagetoronto.org/event/making-waves-at-the-beach-august/) your ticket and post you have your ticket (scroll to the end of the page)** * A reminder will be sent the day before with my cell and reminder details where to meet and when.
