"*They had a hard fight, though, before they gained the victory: a furious wind and driving snow, added to the natural difficulties, nearly turned the scale against them."* Edward Whymper On the anniversary of the 1862 first ascent of the mighty Dent Blanche, I shall be walking to St Albans to tip my hat to one of the first ascensionists, Woolmore Wigram. Leaving Elstree & Borehamwood station in Zone 6, the walk will visit a pleasant lunch stop halt the *Green Dragon* reminiscent to those familiar with Mihai's local walk. St Albans needs no introduction. Cathedral, Roman remains, many historic buildings. Entering the city, St Stephen's was founded Abbot Ulsinus in AD 948, and of the original a small window has been dated to around AD 950. TRAVEL: Walk starts 10.15 AM from ELSTREE & BOREHAMWOOD station (Zone 6). Walk ends at ST ALBANS The off peak single back from ST ALBANS CITY to Elstree is £4.30 with a Groupsave or Network card. In the morning the 09.48 from St Pancras arrives at Elstree 10.12. *How to join?* * The walk is entirely free of charge; * You only arrange for your own travel and pub expenses; * Understand our terms and conditions below (the "IMPORTANT" part); * Understand how to stay safe outdoors, as you will be responsible for yourself. Workers were planting lime trees in the village of Merstham when they came across buried swords. Dating from the Neolithic and better known since Thomas A Becket as the Pilgrims' Way, the "Harroway" Old English *hereweg* passes through Merstham. Whether in AD 851 this was the site of *Aclea,* "the field of oaks", is a debate contested by various places named Ockley. What is certain, is that troublesome Norsemen passed this way. This walk from Merstham follows their footsteps along the *hereweg*, through Gatton Park, where oaks grow. Then it's up onto the Downs for far reaching views and lunch by a mere pond. [Gatton Park – What’s on at Gatton Park](https://gattonpark.co.uk/) Outward Travel: Take the train departing 10 AM from London Bridge arrives at Merstham 10.31 AM. Buy a return ticket to MERSTHAM. The return train fare with a Network Card or GroupSave is £9.95. People gather outside the ticket office to arrange group tickets. Walk start: 10:35 AM from MERSTHAM rail station. Bring a packed lunch. Circular walk. *How to join?* * The walk is entirely free of charge; * You only arrange for your own travel and pub expenses; * Understand our terms and conditions below (the "IMPORTANT" part); * Understand how to stay safe outdoors, as you will be responsible for yourself. See our quick safety tips: http://www.meetup.com/Free-Outdoor-Trips-From-London/about/ *What to bring* * Plenty of water, 1-2 litres recommended * Enough snacks and packed lunch to keep you energized along the walk * Extra snacks and an extra packed lunch just in case * Rainproof (ideally waterproof) clothing, sturdy shoes/boots you don't mind getting muddy * Spare socks * Walking poles and/or an umbrella :-) * Yourself... * ...and your camera! * Cash for train ticket * Cash for pub at the end of the walk? The **Seven Sisters** are a spectacular series of gleaming white chalk cliffs shaped over thousands of years by natural erosion processes. Erosion has since created an “eighth sister,” and today the cliffs stand as one of England’s most iconic landscapes. We begin in the coastal town of **Seaford**, home to a Napoleonic-era **Martello Tower** built in 1810 as part of a chain of 103 coastal defences against French invasion. From here, the trail climbs onto the cliff tops, where for much of the day we walk high above the sea, treated to endless coastal views and fresh sea air. Our route follows the **South Downs Way**, passing through **Birling Gap** and past the striking **Belle Tout Lighthouse**, famously moved 17 metres inland in 1999 to save it from falling into the sea. The final highlight is **Beachy Head**, a dramatic beauty spot with sheer chalk cliffs dropping into the sea below. We finish in **Eastbourne**, statistically England’s sunniest town, where we celebrate our coastal adventure with a visit the the pier, time on the beach, as well as optional fish and chips and of course our usual pub visit. 🧭 **Guide:** • Leader: [GRAHAM](https://www.outdooraholics.co.uk/MeetTheOutdooraholics.pdf) • Contact (hike day only): 07796 098487 🍽️ **Food:** • Bring a packed lunch (for the cliff-top picnic) • Option for fish & chips in Eastbourne • Pub visit after the hike (drinks optional) 🎒**What to Bring** • Hiking boots/shoes • Water (2 litres minimum) • Packed lunch • Waterproofs (jacket and trousers) • Hat and gloves if cold • Train tickets are arranged – just meet us at the meeting point ⚠️ **Safety** Your guide is a trained hike leader and Outdoor Activity First Aider ❓ **Want to Know More?** • [New to Our Trips?](https://outdooraholics.co.uk/new_to_our_day_hikes.pdf) (perfect for first-timers, answers “what to expect”) • [About Us](https://outdooraholics.co.uk/about_us.pdf) (who Outdooraholics are, credibility, history) • [FAQs](https://outdooraholics.co.uk/FAQ.pdf) (covers common queries) 📲 **Explore More &** **Stay Connected** [Day hikes list](https://outdooraholics.co.uk/hikesbygrade.pdf) 👣 [Calendar - All trips](https://www.meetup.com/outdooraholics/events/calendar/) 📖 [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/outdooraholics/) 📸 [Facebook page](https://www.facebook.com/Outdooraholics) & [Photos group](https://www.facebook.com/groups/Outdooraholics) 📄 **Terms and Conditions** By signing up or attending you agree to our [Terms and Conditions](https://outdooraholics.co.uk/TermsConditionsOutdooraholicsHikingUK.pdf) **Cliffs – danger** There are sheer drops and these soft chalk cliffs can collapse without warning. ################# **Explore Britain’s most stunning trails in a small group of up to 15, travelling together by private minibus to beautiful, remote locations not easily reached by public transport.** **We’ve created a list of [FAQs](https://drive.google.com/file/d/12gIZWTLfA3zQsx1fb0lpv1zOWP2vC5tq/view?usp=drive_link) to help answer your questions.** ################# This is a **one-off hike** that we run just once a year, carefully timed to coincide with peak heather flowering – don't miss it! On this trip, we'll show you the best of Suffolk, both inland and along the coast. In the morning, we'll set off for a relaxing walk between the charming villages of Long Melford and Lavenham. Lavenham, nestled in the heart of the tranquil Suffolk countryside, is considered Britain's best-preserved medieval village. It's famous for its many unusual, timber-framed, brightly painted houses, which are noticeably crooked, leaning on each other as if for support. *There was a crooked man, and he walked a crooked mile.* *He found a crooked sixpence upon a crooked stile.* *He bought a crooked cat, which caught a crooked mouse,* *And they all lived together in a little crooked house.* Remember that nursery rhyme? It is believed to be inspired by Lavenham. 500 years ago, Lavenham was the 14th richest town in England, thanks to the booming wool trade. Wealthy wool merchants built grand houses, churches and other beautiful buildings, which we can still see today. After stopping for lunch in Lavenham and taking plenty of pictures, we'll drive to the coast to discover the Suffolk Coast & Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Our trail will take us to the unspoilt, natural shingle Dunwich Beach and the beautiful Dunwich Heath – one of the jewels in Suffolk's crown, especially known for the glorious mantle of purple heather that covers it each summer, with the North Sea as a stunning backdrop. Heather typically reaches its peak flowering in July, so don't miss this perfect opportunity! The trip is suitable for **BEGINNERS**, as both walks are almost entirely flat. **ITINERARY** **07:45** Meet outside ibis London City – Shoreditch Hotel, 5 Commercial St, E1 6BF (near Aldgate East Station) **08:00** Sharp departure **10:00-12:00** Hike from Long Melford to Lavenham (difficulty: [Easy](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1BMjvqhAAdSeCdyzLPHs0z04_e2TiKdci/view?usp=sharing), distance: 7km, ascent: 70m) **12:00-12:30** Walk to the most beautiful medieval houses of Lavenham **12:30-13:15** Lunch in Lavenham, free time to explore gift shops **13:15** Departure **14:45-16:45** Hike to Dunwich Heath and Beach in the Suffolk Coast & Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (difficulty: [Easy](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1BMjvqhAAdSeCdyzLPHs0z04_e2TiKdci/view?usp=sharing), distance: 6km, ascent: 20m) **16:45** Departure **19:30** London, we'll drop you off near Bow Road Underground Station **TRANSPORT** As on most of our trips, we'll travel in a comfortable 16-seater minibus. **SAFETY** This hike is led by an experienced, Outdoor First Aid qualified hike leader. **BOOKING** To keep ticket prices down and avoid PayPal/Meetup fees (£7 extra per ticket), we kindly ask for payment by bank transfer.
