Have you been to The Huntington? I was able to get 12 FREE Tickets (save $29) for Thurs. 10/1/26. Great place to casually go walking to enjoy the botanical gardens, collections of art, history and literature. Parking is free, but get there early to snag a good spot. Bring a bottle of water with you and wear some good walking shoes. Afterwards, we can enjoy lunch there at their cafe (we'll need to snag a table or two) while others get in line to make their dining choices. We will go on a short walk to explore an area and learn about the wild plants, and their edible and medicinal uses. We will study the diverse flora and we’ll have an opportunity to make a fire and do some light cooking.Students examining fresh chicken-of-the-woods Come and enjoy your time outdoors learning about plant and how they can be used for teas, salads, soups, and medicines. Also you’ll learn about those plants used for fire in a traditional manner.

MIDDAY GOURD WORKSHOP

To attend and for exact location, Register [HERE](https://www.schoolofself-reliance.com/event/midday-gourd-workshop/) Thursday, October 1, Noon to 2P LEARN THE ART OF CREATING A CUP, BOWL, PLATE, OR SCOOP FROM THE HARD-SHELLED ORNAMENTAL GOURD In this mid-day class, you will take a dried gourd and learn all the steps to turning it into a beautiful and functional plate, or bowl, or canteen, or even a scoop. We’ll bring the tools you need, but if you have saws, files or rasps, bring them. It’s not that hard to make a good functional gourd. We used to each make one before a week at Dirttime, and then if we cut it just right, we’d have a dish, and a bowl. Bushcraft skills? Survival Skill? Whatever you call it, it’s a great skill, and a great opportunity to meet with like-minded people. $45 ($30 students/seniors) Please register to attend and for location. Hahamonga Watershed County Park is our field office, the class may be in a different location.

Board Games at The Original Farmers’ Market!

🎲 Bring Your Own Board Game (optional) and jacket 🧥 (it gets chilly at night)! Come hang out, meet new people, and enjoy a chill game night on the second floor of The Farmers’ Market at The Grove. 🧋🍛✨ Whether you’re a serious board gamer or just here for the vibes, everyone is welcome! 💛 We’ll be using the outdoor tables on the second floor of the farmers market right next to the community room. There are several staircases you can use to get to the second floor. One of them is directly to the left of Figure 8 Tea Project. We’ll have some games available, but feel free to bring a favorite you’d like to share! ✨ Most importantly, bring positive energy and be respectful so everyone can have a fun and comfortable time together. ☺️🫶🏽 **Parking** at the Farmer’s Market is $56.00, so I don’t recommend parking there. There is some metered parking on Fairfax Ave and Third Street that is free after 8pm. There is also **free street parking** on N Hayworth Ave, S Hayworth Ave, and Oakwood Ave. From the grove just drive north up Fairfax Ave and make a left on Oakwood Ave. Make sure to read the signs. When the event is over we can carpool back to Oakwood Ave or walk together.

Let's go to the California Avocado Festival in Carpinteria by Train!

What could be more quintessentially California than a festival paying tribute to the Avocado, full of different guacamoles, and getting there on the Pacific Surfliner? This is the 40th year they've been having this festival. There is even Avocado ice cream! Entry to the Festival is free, and the booths are sponsored by local non-profits to raise money for their worthy causes. We've done this trip a couple of times, and it's always been fun. This unique festival is in Carpinteria, only a couple of blocks from the Carpinteria Amtrak station. It's one of the largest festivals in California, with three days of fabulous food and terrific music. [https://avofest.com/](https://avofest.com/) In case you didn't know, Santa Barbara County is the third largest avocado producer in North America, with Carpinteria being a major contributor. As the Festival has grown, so do the number of participants and festival-goers. In past years, over forty non-profit groups benefited by catering to 100,000 avocado visitors. The California Avocado Festival™ itself is a non-profit group that generates its own operating revenue each year. The annual event is completely organized by a committee of volunteers, and includes one part-time staff person. Our group will take the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner from Union Station in Downtown Los Angeles, to Carpinteria. We'll walk to the Festival from the Amtrak station, just a few blocks. Ticket prices: Senior ($30 Coach) There are two areas to park at Union Station. One, East, is $8 for the day, the other, West, is $16 for the day. See the map in the photo. The Union Station web site says the West area has limited parking, so it might be best to plan to park in the East structure. We can form carpools closer to the event date. Urban Partners Los Angeles’ “Groceries for our Neighbors” food distribution program provides essential weekly groceries to thousands of low-income, homeless, and senior members of the community in Los Angeles. Volunteers make up a large part of the program, with a small number of staff members coming from the community we serve. This initiative has been a vital resource for those in need for over 32 years, and we are committed to continuing to support our community through it. Each week, approximately 35,000 people in our community struggle with food insecurity, and around 10,000 members may go without meals due to financial constraints. Our relief efforts aim to ensure that no one in our community goes hungry, especially vulnerable populations. We are dedicated to securing our food and funding reserves in order to respond effectively to emergencies and handle the ongoing pandemic and its aftermath, as well as future Crises. We distribute, on average, over 30,000 pounds of food every Saturday. Our goal is to provide enough groceries for a family of four to sustain themselves for one week. Our ability to continue to operate is due in large part to the generous support of businesses and individual donors who believe in our mission to alleviate hunger for struggling Los Angeles families. If you would like to join us on the frontlines and help fight hunger in our community, we welcome your assistance at our food bank. We operate on Saturdays from 6:00 am to 9:30 am, rain or shine, some holidays excluded. Join me for a beautiful evening at **The Huntington's spectacular Chinese Garden (Liu Fang Yuan)** as we celebrate the **Mid-Autumn Moon Festival**, one of the most important traditional festivals in Chinese culture! 🌕🏮 We'll **meet at 6 PM** before heading into the special evening celebration at 6:30 PM. 🌕 What is the Mid-Autumn Festival? The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, is traditionally celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth month of the Chinese lunar calendar, when the moon is believed to be at its fullest and brightest. The festival has a long history dating back more than 2,000 years and is centered around themes of family reunion, togetherness, gratitude, and wishing for happiness and prosperity. One of the most beloved traditions is sharing mooncakes, a round pastry symbolizing completeness and family unity. Families traditionally gather together, admire the full moon, enjoy food and tea, and spend time with loved ones. 🏮 What makes this event special? The Huntington transforms its stunning Chinese Garden into a magical nighttime setting for the celebration. We'll have the opportunity to stroll through the moonlit garden, enjoy the beautiful scenery and atmosphere, and experience the Mid-Autumn Festival in a unique cultural setting. The combination of Chinese architecture, ponds, gardens, lanterns, the evening moon, and the festival atmosphere makes this a particularly beautiful experience—and a great opportunity for photos! 📸🌕 This should be a fun and relaxed evening whether you're familiar with Chinese culture or experiencing the Moon Festival for the first time. 🎟️ Tickets **Everyone is responsible for purchasing their own ticket.** Tickets are expected to be released by The Huntington in early September and may be limited, so please keep an eye on the official event page.
