Community Habitat Restoration event at Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook

Join us for a habitat restoration event! It’s a great opportunity to learn about native plants and local wildlife, all while spending some time outdoors in beautiful Baldwin Hills Parklands. This event is in partnership with California State Parks Foundation. Spaces are limited, so if you are interested in participating, **please RSVP to the coordinator at least 24hours in advance of the event: amendiaperez@naturenexusinstitute.org** Important things to know about this event: * Volunteers under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Habitat restoration tasks are best suited for people who are 12 years of age or older. * Please wear long pants and covered shoes. * Please bring plenty of drinking water for yourself as well as ample sun protection. * Work sites are frequently off trail and may be on uneven terrain. * We typically meet up at the top parking lot adjacent to the visitor center to start the event, but we work in several sites throughout the park. Urban Partners 🛒 LA

Urban Partners Los Angeles’ “Groceries for our Neighbors” food distribution program provides essential weekly groceries to thousands of low-income, homeless, and senior members of the community in Los Angeles. Volunteers make up a large part of the program, with a small number of staff members coming from the community we serve. This initiative has been a vital resource for those in need for over 32 years, and we are committed to continuing to support our community through it. Each week, approximately 35,000 people in our community struggle with food insecurity, and around 10,000 members may go without meals due to financial constraints. Our relief efforts aim to ensure that no one in our community goes hungry, especially vulnerable populations. We are dedicated to securing our food and funding reserves in order to respond effectively to emergencies and handle the ongoing pandemic and its aftermath, as well as future Crises. We distribute, on average, over 30,000 pounds of food every Saturday. Our goal is to provide enough groceries for a family of four to sustain themselves for one week. Our ability to continue to operate is due in large part to the generous support of businesses and individual donors who believe in our mission to alleviate hunger for struggling Los Angeles families. If you would like to join us on the frontlines and help fight hunger in our community, we welcome your assistance at our food bank. We operate on Saturdays from 6:00 am to 9:30 am, rain or shine, some holidays excluded. Wild Food and Useful Plants by the Season

**Saturday, September 19, 10 a.m. WILD FOOD AND USEFUL PLANTS BY THE SEASON** To attend and for exact location, register [HERE](https://www.schoolofself-reliance.com/event/autumn-foraging-wild-food-and-useful-plants-by-the-season/) This series of workshops, one per season, will show you nature through the seasons, from a forager’s perspective. The essence of this class is to develop seasonal knowledge and observational skills: How to look, where to look, what to look for. Plus, we will also focus on responsible and sustainable gathering methods, including collection of seeds and cuttings so you can grow plants in your own backyard. You’ll learn how to identify and collect foods, medicines, soaps, fire-materials, and other useful parts of plants. You’ll learn to think like foragers of the past, who had to have an intimate knowledge of the seasons, and foresight for the future. (For example, sometimes you do NO foraging in an area if the plant or seed is not abundant.) Join us each quarter for an insightful walk into a wild area, with a focus on interpreting what’s available that season. Each session will include demonstrations, hands-on practice, and sampling of the seasonal foods. Each session includes a list of what is normally available in that season. AUTUMN In early autumn, it is usually dry, and plants are in a dormant phase. It’s typically hot, and dry. Streams will be dry, or running low. You’ll only find the hardiest of plants for eating, such as mustards. There still might be some manzanitas left to collect, and the acorns will just be starting to mature and to fall. Though it’s still early for toyon berries, you’ll be able to observe what sort of crop will be coming. You’ll be able to take note of what to look for in the next few months. You never know what to expect, but you might find some greens as well, usually the hardiest greens, and the late-blooming greens. This is a good way to look at the environment at a lean time, with an eye to the future. We’ll also share a few bushcrafting skills. Location: San Gabriel Mountains.
