From crisis to conservation: Empowering action for biodiversity

We are living in extraordinary times that can challenge our ability to feel hopeful about the future. To meet this moment, California Native Plant Society has launched two ambitious multi-year biodiversity campaigns: a conservation campaign focused on saving native plants in their natural habitats, and an urban biodiversity campaign that aims to transform the built environment with native plants. In this talk, we’ll discuss the virtuous cycle of hope and action, and where the native plant movement can have the greatest impacts, now and for future generations. Dr. Jun Bando is the executive director of the California Native Plant Society, a nonprofit conservation organization with more than 13,000 members, 35 volunteer-led chapters, and a statewide staff based in Sacramento. She earned her Ph.D. in ecology from UC Davis and her professional background includes work in public policy, higher education, foreign affairs, and national security.

Panama Pac.Int'l Exposition-Marina Green Tour*of 1915 & lunch

We'll be doing a **\***[self-guided walking tour created by the NPS for the Presidio and GGNRA.](https://npshistory.com/publications/goga/brochures/pan-pacific-expo-1915.pdf) The subject is the **Panama-Pacific Int'l Exposition**, (PPIE) of 1915, - that back in the day - the lower part of the Marina District was created for. It had been a marsh that required pumping Bay mud to fill in. Including the Marina Green. There are 13 stops on the tour. We'll take turns reading the National Park Service (NPS) research for each stop, as we walk along the Marina Green, from the Marina Safeway to the eastern edge of Crissy Field. *See the photos attached here.* The Palace of Fine Arts is the only remaining building in San Francisco, from dozens of other buildings that were also works of art. Including many fantastic statues and sculptures. Where are they now? San Franciscans were very serious about the PPIE. They were making a statement, in letting the world know, that they had successfully survived the 1906 Earthquake and Fire. In fact many wealthy San Franciscans built mansions in Pacific Hts. just to overlook the PPIE.
