Alemany Farm Native Plant Volunteer Day

Everyone, young or old, experienced or still learning, is welcome to join our California Native Plant workdays on the **first Monday and third Saturday of each month.** [Registration](https://www.eventbrite.com/e/alemany-farm-native-plant-volunteer-day-registration-155900126475) is required in advance\*\*. *\*\*Please only sign up for what you can 100% commit to and let us know ASAP if you do not plan to attend so we can open your space to someone on the waitlist.* Please plan to **arrive on time at the start of the work session.** **Volunteers will be required to sign a waiver upon arrival.** **Each person in your party** (including children) must be signed up **Bring a mask:** Masks are recommended when working closely with others. **What to bring\* --** we will provide all of the tools you need. If you prefer to bring your own gloves, hori hori, or clippers, please do so. * Mask or face covering * Water Bottle * Hat * Sturdy Shoes * Jacket with layered clothing underneath * Sunscreen * Snacks \*Travel light! The farm is an open public space and we have no secure storage for bags. Green Hairstreak Corridor Planting Workday

Help restore native plant habitat in the Inner Sunset district for the rare Coastal Green Hairstreak butterfly. Folks who join these workdays help create and expand the ecosystem for this little green gem of a pollinator. We emphasize biodiverse and ecologically relevant plants, and you will get to learn about many of our important native plant species. Be ready for activities like weeding, planting, seed collecting, pruning, and other land maintenance tasks. We often work in light rain, but heavy rain cancels. Please dress in long pants, closed-toe shoes, and layers - clothes that might get a little dirty! Bring your own water bottle and sun protection. Volunteering Mixer: Decorating World Tree of Hope, Grace Cathedral

One year old actually :), so we are coming back again, in the format of volunteering mixer. By our experience, volunteering together is a great way to know others, working side by side, with a shared purpose. Grace Cathedral being an iconic place on Nob Hill adds to the context. Every Saturday this month, TownFlame is helping build San Francisco’s World Tree of Hope inside Grace Cathedral. It’s the largest origami holiday tree in the world, decorated with thousands of hand-folded cranes and stars, each carrying a wish for the world. We’re turning the shift into a mixer, then heading out for a sunset walk and dinner. **How it works** We sit at small tables of 5–6 to fold, wire and sort cranes and stars for the tree. Every 30 minutes, half of each table moves to a new one, so by the end of the afternoon you’ll have worked alongside three or four different groups. Your hands stay busy, there’s always something to talk about, and you get new faces every half hour. No origami experience needed. Someone at your table will show you, and soon you’ll be the one teaching. **Schedule** * **11:45 AM:** Meet on the Grace Cathedral front steps (1100 California St) * **12:00–3:00 PM:** Folding mixer inside the cathedral Running late? Walk in and tell them you are there for the tree decoration volunteering, and tell the onsite director that you come from meetup, and ask to sit with the meetup people. * **3:15–4:45 PM:** Golden-hour walk around Nob Hill: Huntington Park, the Fairmont, the Cable Car Museum, ending at a viewpoint for sunset * **5:00 PM:** Group coffee or dinner nearby (location shared with RSVPs; pay your own way) Come for the folding only, or stay for the whole afternoon. **Before you come** * **Register with Rainbow World Fund as well as RSVPing here.** The cathedral needs every volunteer on their list: **[https://bit.ly/WorldTreeofHopeVolunteerSignUp](https://bit.ly/WorldTreeofHopeVolunteerSignUp)** * Wear layers, because the cathedral is chilly inside and it gets cold on the hill after sunset. * Coming from the South Bay? You’ll leave having helped build something thousands of people will see this December, and knowing a few more people than you did at noon. Can’t make the 7th? We’re back on the 14th, 21st and 28th. Each Saturday is a new group of people. *** **🌇 Nob Hill → Russian Hill Golden-Hour Walk (self-guided)** *About 1 mile, 1.5 hours. Steep in places. Start: Grace Cathedral steps, 3:15pm.* **How it works:** A different person reads each stop aloud. At every stop, switch walking partners so you walk the next stretch with someone you haven’t talked to yet. **Stop 1: Huntington Park** *(directly across Taylor St from the cathedral)* A small, formal park at the top of Nob Hill, with the tortoise fountain in the middle. 💬 *Which table were you at, and who taught you the best fold?* **Stop 2: California & Mason** *(walk east along California, 1 block)* The Fairmont Hotel is on the south side. On the north side is the brownstone Pacific-Union Club, the old Flood Mansion and one of the few buildings on the hill that survived the 1906 fire. In the 1870s and 1880s, Nob Hill was where the railroad and silver-mine millionaires built their mansions. 💬 *What brought you to the Bay Area?* **Stop 3: Cable Car Museum, Optional** *(walk north, downhill on Mason, to Washington St)* Free. Go up to the viewing gallery to see the big wheels that pull every cable car in the city. **Arrive by 4:15, because it closes at 5.** 💬 *Your best or worst cable car story?* **Stop 4: Ina Coolbrith Park** *(keep walking north on Mason to Vallejo, then climb the Vallejo St steps west)* This is the steep part, so take it slowly. At the top, face east toward Coit Tower, the Bay Bridge and Treasure Island. Sunset is around 5pm, so stay to watch the light change on the bay and the city lights come on. 💬 *What’s one thing you want to do before the year ends?* **Finish: North Beach** *(walk back down the Vallejo steps east to Columbus Ave)*. On the first Saturday of every month, we meet at the base of the Palou & Phelps hill and join the Friends of Palou Phelps community group and SF Rec & Park on their volunteer workday. Our workdays will vary every Saturday, but both the hill and the garden will be the focus on these days. **Join our weekly habitat restoration event, this week at a beautiful San Francisco haven for native beach dune plants and their accompanying wildlife, the Balboa Natural Area. See how nature can rebound if given the chance! This neglected plot of land was restored by SF Rec and Park and now is home to a diverse array of plants and animals. Adah's Stairway Community Volunteer Workday

Join our monthly 4th-Saturday workday to take care of the garden at Adah's Stairway in the Haight. Adah's Stairway is a community partnership: a public stairway, garden, and bird/wildlife habitat located in the Buena Vista Park and Haight Ashbury neighborhoods. Nature in the City is working with local residents to enhance the wildlife potential for this park-– once a forgotten place, which had become blighted by illegal dumping and graffiti, is now a tribute to local walking guru Adah Bakalinsky, author of the Stairway Walks in San Francisco. What's more, our work here will create a bird sanctuary for resident and migrating birds designed with the Cedar Waxwing (Bombycilla cedrorum) in mind. Cedar Waxwings are gorgeous birds that pass through San Francisco during spring and fall feeding on berries and fruits along the Pacific Flyway migration route. 4th Sunday -October 25th Tree Planting

Looking for a small but impactful way to help in the fight against climate change, and green your community over a weekend? Volunteer to plant trees! Our Tree Team plants trees in sidewalks all around Oakland. As these trees grow, they help to improve air quality, sequester carbon, and improve the environmental conditions of our neighborhoods. Many of the beautiful large trees you see along sidewalks are a result of our volunteers, and we still have so much more to do. No experience is required, but volunteers should be ready to do some digging and get a bit dirty. What: Planting trees along sidewalks and streets in Oakland for homeowners. After the training, we will split into smaller groups and drive to the sites. Who: You! Bring your friends and/or make new ones. No experience is needed. You should be able to lift 30 pounds (half the weight of a new tree). What to Bring: Wear closed-toed shoes, clothes that you can get dirty, and a hat for sun protection; bring your own water, lunch and a snack. We'll provide the shovels, picks, brooms, and gloves, but if you have your own please bring them along as we are short on supplies these days. If you are bringing a minor, please let us know. How: Dig a hole, take the tree out of its pot and put it into the ground, backfill the soil around the roots, and sweep the sidewalk clean.
