The trail follows the creek closely for most of the walk\. All the Birds, Singing, Evie Wyld (Miles Franklin, 2014)

All the Birds, Singing won the Miles Franklin over novels by Tim Winton and Alexis Wright and the Booker winner that year, The Narrow Road to the Deep North. Tough competition! A contemporary reviewer says the novel "should enhance her reputation as one of our most gifted novelists". Set on an unnamed English Island with flashbacks to a traumatic rural WA upbringing, reviewers praised the interlocking stories, one going forward and the other back into childhood. Full of foreboding and well-paced this book is a great story about a strong woman, well told. Since starting this book club a few years ago we have formed a nice core membership. If you haven't come yet, please look out for the books on the table, pull up a chair, order a wine and join us. We like to hear what everyone has to say and enjoy the conversation, we're not cliquey at all! Oh, and to defray the Meetup monthly bill I will accept gold coin contributions or wine if you want to pay for multiple in one hit. I hope to see everyone again at this one with some new faces.

Discover the Night Sky: Venus at the Melbourne Planetarium

Join me for a night under the dome at the Melbourne Planetarium for July's **Discover the Night Sky**, a monthly evening of astronomy hosted by astronomer Dr Tanya Hill. This month's theme is **Venus: new missions to the evening star**, so we'll be looking at our closest planetary neighbour and the spacecraft heading its way. Expect the planetarium's gorgeous full-dome visuals, plus storytelling and the latest astronomy and space news, with a chance to ask questions along the way. It's a lovely, low-key way to spend a winter evening and meet a few fellow space-curious people. We'll meet outside the planetarium entrance gates at 6:00pm, head in together, and settle in for the 6:30pm session. Afterwards there's optional stargazing through telescopes if the weather plays along, before we wrap up around 8:30pm. A couple of quick heads-ups: this is an adults-only (18+) event, it's run by the planetarium rather than by us, and you'll need to book your own ticket. Slippery trails, flooding, and poor visibility are no fun or safe. We’ll also reschedule for thunderstorms or if trails are still soaked from heavy rain the days before. Light rain (under 5 mm/hour) is usually fine. We’ll check each hike case-by-case.
