New paintings by Mark Viola explore layered identity, movement, and perception through translucent, process-driven works. Through explores translucence, movement, and the layered nature of perception. Figures emerge and recede within surfaces that reveal the process of their making, inviting viewers to look beyond the immediate image toward what lies beneath. In this way, the act of painting becomes inseparable from the subject itself. The accumulation of layers echoes the psychological and emotional weight carried by each figure, suggesting that identity is not static, but continuously constructed, obscured, and revealed over time. Rather than offering resolution, the works remain open—holding space for ambiguity, motion, and multiple readings. There are many excellent **ROM Walks**--and this group attends ONE of them each year. ***FREE***--just show up at meeting spot. (ROM brings a number of excellent tour docents out for this) This charming walk takes us just a stone’s throw from the Museum into Yorkville, a market-tollgate village that originated in the early 1830s on what was then the outskirts of Toronto. Though fully absorbed into the city over time, Yorkville has retained a distinct character, the result of navigating decades of change while maintaining its unique identity. https://www.rom.on.ca/whats-on/events/romwalks-free-romwalk-yorkville-1 Our walk starts at the Yorkville Library, and continues to local landmarks such as the Firehall, the Heliconian Club, and Yorkville Park, before concluding at the Royal Ontario Museum. Along our route, we’ll see the evidence of Yorkville’s fascinating transformations—from its Victorian beginnings to the vibrant hippie scene of the 1960s, and on to the upscale residential and retail neighbourhood it is today. And remember, parting with a coin or two in Yorkville is not a new phenomenon. This is a lovely WALK--perhaps stopping at 20 locations throughout the community! Turn left and head down the escalator. Learn how to create amazing cinematic images in small spaces. This is a great chance to shoot in a historic space with an amazing model and some great Elinchrom equipment. **Location: Scadding Cabin, Exhibition Place**Our Photography Lighting Workshop takes place at the historic **Scadding Cabin** — Toronto’s oldest surviving house. Built in 1794 by John Scadding, an immigrant from Devonshire, the log cabin originally stood on the east side of the Don River. It served as his home until 1796, after which it was used as a farm building for decades. In 1879, to celebrate the very first Toronto Industrial Exhibition (now the CNE), the cabin was dismantled, moved, and rebuilt by the York Pioneers at its current site in Exhibition Place. Steeped in over two centuries of history, the cabin offers a rustic, atmospheric backdrop perfect for exploring lighting techniques in photography. We will have a wonderful model onsite to pose and act like a Pioneer at home in the evening, this is a chance to learn some great small space lighting and posing techniques. Guided Tour New Art Trail on the New Toronto Island + Dinner (Commissioners St)

On **Saturday August 8th**, **take a Guided Tour of the New Lassonde Art Trail (LAT), that opened late June with its final art installation completed on July 25th. LAT is part of the new Biidaasige Park, situated on the extraordinary site of a new island in the Toronto harbour archipelago and is easily accessible via TTC**. LAT is a series of 15 interconnected public art sites spanning over 4 km of paths that weave through 60 acres of new parkland along Toronto’s waterfront. LAT believes public art enhances wellbeing, guides respectful dialogue and opens our eyes to how we steward the environment. Tours are subject to cancellation in the event of adverse weather. So if the forecast calls for rain, I will make a call 3 hours prior to the event start time. LAT is at the heart of a massive $1.4 billion project that rerouted the mouth of the Don River and built flood protection for downtown Toronto. This feat of civil and bioengineering created a new island in the city harbour called Ookwemin Minising. The project established a new river valley with functional wetlands and 60 acres of publicly accessible open space along the riverbanks and inner harbour. It cleaned and restored soils contaminated from past industrialization, and naturally accommodated the effects of flooding and erosion.
