Writers’ Support & Check-In — NO WRITING During Meetup

**\*\*Note: THIS MEETUP IS NOT A WRITING SESSION. It's an informal chat where we can share about our writing. THE ACTUAL WRITING MEETUP IS RIGHT AFTER THIS ONE ENDS. Sign up for that one [here](https://www.meetup.com/shutupandwritesfo/events/314574135).** **Location:** \*\***UPDATE:** **This week we're meeting at Jane On Third at 1pm, since the [writing meetup](https://www.meetup.com/shutupandwritesfo/events/314574135) this week is here from 2-4pm.\*\*** Food and drinks are sold inside. There are restrooms in the cafe. Look for a table with the "Writers' Support & Check-In Group" sign. Check comments for updates. This hour-long writers' check-in and support group is just before the writing meetup, which I plan to attend at 2 p.m. You're welcome to join the Shut Up & Write meetup right after to actually write. Join us for a relaxed gathering of writers to connect, share progress, discuss challenges, and support each other. We’ll focus on community, encouragement, and exploring what kind of group we want to build together. While I’m especially interested in creative nonfiction, writers of all genres are welcome as we figure out what works best for the group. We’ll have time to introduce ourselves, check in, and chat about what we want from this group.

Hangout + Silent Writing

Hangout + Silent Writing

Sun, Jun 21, 8:00 PM
From Genre + Fiction Writers of San Francisco

Hangout + Silent Writing is the backbone of the group. This is where both build a community of writers and also take time to connect with our writing. **At 1pm:** People will start gathering in the coffee shop. This is an opportunity to meet other writers, introduce yourselves, and just chat it up! Discuss your writing or your favorite book or why your bus ride was extra interesting today. (What else inspires our writing than the stories we witness?) **At 1:30pm:** We will begin an hour of silent work. This is when we pull out laptops or notebooks or whatever and begin working. Whether you're working on a novel or a screenplay or a piece of flash fiction, this is your chance to dedicate one solid hour to just engaging with it. Before the hour starts, I will call everyone's attention and do a round of check-ins where we share our intentions for the hour. **At 2:30pm:** The hour of silent work is over! I will call everyone's attention again and we will check-out by sharing how the hour went for us. After check-out, people may choose to continue working away. If you're really in the groove, I encourage this! Otherwise, people may go back to chatting and discussing their writing, etc. You may also decide to head out if you have other Sunday activities to get to. **Location:** We will be meeting at the Wave Art Collective in Lower Haight. They have both indoor and outdoor seating so plan accordingly. On Sundays, they graciously open up their space to the community. They run a small coffee shop and invite pop-up food vendors. I can guarantee there will always be coffee, but I cannot guarantee what food will be there. Everyone is encouraged to purchase what they can to help support the Wave Art Collective!

Join us for some focused writing time. You can write poetry, your resume, do research, write a novel, screenplay, short stories, song lyrics or work projects, create apps and games, etc. All types of writing and writers at all levels of experience and expertise are welcome. But don’t worry, no one will see what you've written. This session is about getting your writing done and meeting other writers in your area. When you show up, say hello to everyone and get your writing tools ready. Once you’re all settled, take some time to chat with your fellow writers. Once everyone’s arrived, I will lead quick introductions. Writers can say what they are working on if they choose. I then set the timer for our quiet and focused writing session. Afterward, we’ll have time to chat and get to know each other. We often talk about our successes and challenges as writers. If you don’t have time to stick around, no worries! We don’t host critiques or readings. These events are a safe space for writers of all skill levels and genres to work on their craft, so no one will read or critique your writing.
