Hi everyone! We have another special session for Saturday the 19th.... As some of you may know, Bay Area figure drawing organization Sketchboard.co is opening a new art gallery/ co-op space....in conjunction with the lowrider parade down Mission Street! Come hang out in front of "Sin Miedo" gallery, say hi to the lovely community, and paint/ sketch cars! We all know the drivers would LOVE to see their precious cars immortalized in the form of art! Bring a standing easel/ chair and sunscreen. I will bring some extra supplies in case you don't have any. As always use the chat below to see updates and ask questions!

**The plan for our SEPTEMBER 27th session is st HOLLY PARK in Bernal Heights.** Nice landscape and views, lots of benches, shade, bathrooms and food/drinks nearby. Public transport should be easy. **At 1pm** I'll meet you in the park at the top of Highland Ave - come say hello then find a spot to draw. **At 3:30 pm** we'll meet at the same spot to share and enjoy everybody's work. **Bring layers!** Fog and wind are *always* a possibility, dress in layers. Rockaway is a C-shaped beach with dramatic headlands, It has a unique riparian corridor created by Calera Creek as it flows towards the ocean. Here you can often see beautiful wildflowers and many birds and butterflies. And, few blocks away at the north end of the promenade you can find additional dramatic views for painting. After lunch, you might want to check out some of the cute shops near the north end. **Parking** Plentiful and free. The north and south parking lots are a few blocks from each other. A 10 minute walk along the promenade connects them, or you can drive the short distance. **Restrooms** Located in the South parking Lot **Lunch @ 12:30** Please meet in the South Parking lot for lunch and to share our work.

We’re heading to Oakland’s Pill Hill neighborhood to sketch at Olivia Coffee & Flowers, a spot with distinctly South Korean coffee influence with espresso, pour overs, matcha, and creative specialty drinks. Every life contains other lives. The city we almost moved to. The work we once imagined doing. The place we never expected to call home. The friendship that began by accident. The door we opened without knowing where it would lead. Some possibilities disappear quietly. Others arrive without invitation and change the course of everything. A chance conversation. A missed train. An unexpected yes. A sudden departure. Someone entering our lives at precisely the right moment. Our lives are shaped not only by the choices we make, but by chance. By timing. By circumstance. By the paths we choose and those that close before us. By encounters we could never have planned. Years later, we sometimes look back and wonder how differently everything might have unfolded. Perhaps every life is accompanied by other possible lives. Selves we once imagined. Paths we chose and paths we left behind. Possibilities we lost—and possibilities we never knew to hope for. **The Lives We Almost Lived** is **a gathering devoted to choice, chance, possibility, and the roads not taken.** Together, we will explore the curious relationship between the life we once imagined, the lives that might have been, and the surprising life that somehow became our own. Across traditions, poets and writers have wondered about these turns of fate and possibility. C.P. Cavafy wrote of journeys and the lives formed along the way. Fernando Pessoa inhabited multiple selves and imagined identities. Elizabeth Bishop found entire histories inside departures and distant places. Wisława Szymborska returned again and again to chance—the astonishing accidents through which one life becomes ours rather than another. Agha Shahid Ali wrote across memory, migration, exile, and return. This gathering asks: **How have unexpected choices and chance encounters shaped the lives we are living?** **What possibilities opened when other paths did not unfold as we imagined?** **What parts of our earlier dreams and imagined selves still travel with us?** **How might the roads not taken help us see the road we are on differently?** We will read poems about choices and coincidences, missed encounters and unexpected arrivals, abandoned dreams and surprising beginnings, alternate selves, migration, love, friendship, and the mysterious turns through which a life acquires its shape. Sketching the Views at Baker Beach

**Our next Marin Sketchers Meet Up will be just north of the Golden Gate Bridge at Fort Baker - Cavallo Point.** There are an amazing variety of vantage points from which to sketch from at this former 1905 U.S. Army post: historic army buildings and gun emplacements, the fishing pier at the sheltered harbor and while in a comfortable Adirondack chair on the 2nd floor deck at Cavallo Point Lodge. All with a dynamic view of the Golden Gate Bridge as a backdrop. This cafe is closed on the weekend, so we worked in a rare weekday (Thursday) event to ensure we got to experience it. Blue Heron Lake remains one of the most peaceful spots inside Golden Gate Park. The lake was renamed from Stow Lake to Blue Heron Lake in 2024 to honor the great blue herons that nest around Strawberry Hill. Surrounded by trees, bridges, and scenic views, you will often see paddle boats on its calm waters and lovely walking paths provide excellent painting options. **Parking** Parking is on the adjacent street and is free **Restrooms** At the nearby boathouse **Lunch @ 12:30** Meet in the vicinity of this bridge for lunch

Perhaps home is not simply the place we come from. Perhaps it is a language in which our name sounds different. A kitchen where someone knows what we like to eat. A city whose streets our feet remember. A landscape whose seasons still live somewhere in the body. A person beside whom we do not have to explain ourselves. A song that returns us somewhere. Or a place where we arrived as strangers and, slowly, unexpectedly, learned to belong. We carry many geographies within us. The place where we were born. The neighborhood where we grew up. The cities we chose and the ones circumstance chose for us. The landscapes we left behind. The languages through which we learned to understand the world. The people who made unfamiliar places feel like home. Over time, these places become more than locations on a map. They enter our memories, our gestures, our food, our music, our language, even the ways we understand distance and belonging. Sometimes we leave a place and discover that it never entirely leaves us. And sometimes a place we never imagined belonging to becomes part of who we are. **The Geography Within Us** is **a gathering devoted to place, memory, and belonging, and to the many landscapes, languages, people, and journeys that quietly become part of our inner lives**. Together, we will explore not simply where we come from, but the more mysterious question of **what places have become part of who we are.** Across traditions, poets have carried entire worlds within their poems. Mahmoud Darwish carried Palestine through memory and language. Agha Shahid Ali recreated Kashmir across distance and longing. Derek Walcott explored the ways landscape, history, and identity become inseparable. Naomi Shihab Nye finds belonging in family, language, ordinary encounters, and the crossings between cultures. Joy Harjo writes of land, ancestry, memory, and our deep relationship with place. Their poems remind us that geography is not only something outside us. It can also become something we carry within. Rockaway Beach - Pacifica - Plein Air

Rockaway is one of our favorite places to paint. Hope you can join us! Rockaway beach is one of the best beaches for Plein Air. It's got cool black sand and the rocks are amazing. The ocean view is pretty cool too. Also has restrooms and free parking. Be sure to park in the South Parking lot past the Fairfield Inn. I dropped a map in the images section below. Additional Directions: From Highway 1 - Turn West (Towards the Ocean) onto Rockaway Beach Ave. Take the first left on Old County Road (south) in front of the Fairfield Inn. Continue south on the narrow Old County Road past the Holiday Inn Express. You should see the parking lot straight ahead. We'll be visible on the beach from the parking lot. Parking: I dropped the pin at the beach lot, but there is also parking at Nick's Seafood restaurant where I'm planning on grabbing lunch after the meetup. They have the best crab cakes! What to bring: • Art Supplies - Bring all of your own art supplies for whatever medium you are using e.g. paints, surfaces, brushes, pencils and cleaning supplies. For any beginners who don't know how to start or have questions feel free to post in the comments section or DM me through meetup.com's message service. • Easels - If you're painting please bring your easel. I do have an extra French Easel, a Gorilla Painter Pochade Box and tripods that I'm happy to lend for the day. Just let me know in the comments and I'll throw them into the car. • Outdoor wear - We will be outdoors for most of 3 hours so bring layers, hats, sunscreen. • Snacks/food - Most of the locations we paint at don't have food/drinks so bring whatever food/drinks you require. • Most of the places we paint at have picnic tables or benches, but if you need to sit when you art, be sure to bring something to sit on just in case. • A good test to ensure you have everything you need is to set up to paint in your own yard for 2-3 hours. If you bring everything it takes to create art in your yard then you'll have everything you need to paint with us :) Extra info: • We usually paint in public places. People outside of the group will generally come up and see what you're doing. Usually they just compliment and walk by and sometimes they'll stop and chat a bit. For me this took a little getting used to, but I really enjoy it now and it's become one my favorite things about painting and sketching outdoors. Please don't scare anyone away :) • Observe all signs. Especially the "keep off" ones. • Stay on paths, but do not block them. • Empty any painting fluids off-site including dirty water color water. • Take your garbage with you. [Map showing entrance points to the Botanical Gardens](https://gggp.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/20260131-East-End-GGPark-Map-v5-FINAL.pdf) These beautiful gardens comprise 55 acres within Golden Gate Park and contain about 8,000 different types of plants from around the world. As you enter the gardens from Martin Luther King Drive, walk straight ahead to the lovely waterfowl lake surrounded by beautiful trees, rolling meadows and benches. You typically see ducks, geese and other waterfowl. This is our primary painting area, although you are free to venture elsewhere. There are two entrance gates to the Botanical Gardens - one on 9th Avenue and another on Martin Luther King Boulevard. **Please park on Martin Luther King Boulevard then walk a short distance to the MLK entrance gate.** There is no parking on 9th Avenue so avoid that entrance if you are driving. The 2nd Tuesday of every month is free, **and October 13th is the free day**. **When we return on October 20, the standard entry fee of $7 for seniors and $15 for people under 65 will be in effect.** **Parking** Free parking on Martin Luther King Drive adjacent to the MLK entrance to the park. You may have to walk a short distance from your car to the gardens because the free day is always popular. **Restrooms** When you walk through the entrance gate on Martin Luther King Drive, you will see the restroom building on the path to your right. **Lunch @ 12:30** Meet at the waterfowl lake for lunch and show-and-tell.
