The Trolley Problem: Would you kill the fat man?

Chances are you've heard some version of this before, but it's worth revisiting. A runaway trolley is hurtling down the tracks toward five unsuspecting workers. You're standing on a footbridge above, and beside you is a large man. If you push him onto the tracks, his body will stop the trolley. He will die—but the five will live. Would you do it? What if pushing him saved a hundred people? This is no idle riddle. Our responses to this famous thought experiment (and many variants of it) reveal how we weigh consequences, rights, and intentions, and how our moral intuitions can clash with our moral reasoning. Moreover, these choices matter in the real world. From foreseeable risks to civilian lives in military action, to public‑health decisions about allocating scarce vaccines, to autonomous vehicles deciding who to save in a crash, trolley problems offer an accessible way to confront the hard edges of moral decision‑making in the modern age. PMI Sydney Toastmasters club is one of Toastmasters International clubs. Toastmasters International (TI) is a USA headquartered educational organisation that operates clubs worldwide for the purpose of helping members improve their communication, public speaking, and leadership skills. Through its thousands of member clubs, Toastmasters International offers a program of communication and leadership projects designed to help people learn the arts of speaking, listening, and thinking. This meetup group lists club meetings and events. We are a friendly, welcoming group who are interested in improving our public speaking and leadership skills. Whether your goal is to enhance your professional presentation skills, gain confidence in addressing an audience, we find that doing it in the company of like-minded people can be a lot of fun. Meetings include both impromptu and prepared speaking practice. We meet on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday each month, 5:45 PM for 6:00 PM start. Visiting the club for the first time is free of charge. As always, we will wrap up the event with a quick dinner. Follow our rules below.*** 📌V**olleyball Game Rules** * Max 3 hits per team * A block does not count as one of the 3 hits * Encourage passing or setting the ball to your team mates * No double hits (except after a block) * No touching the net * Serve behind the line * Ball out = point to other team * No catching, kicking or throwing the ball * Rotate when your team wins the serve from the opponents * If your team is already serving and wins the point → no rotation * Communication is encouraged to avoid collisions (Say mine! or my ball) * No interference or distraction of the opposing team * Fix the net if loosen * Play safe and communicate with team mates * Help setup/pack up the nets and balls * Do not lose any pins We will be playing 6v6, 5v5, 4v4 at Coogee Beach on rotation so that everyone who attends gets a chance to play. We will have 2-3 nets for everyone. **Winning team stays, losing team allow next team to play.
