The 48 Hill challenge (this is section one)

San Francisco’s 48 Hills — Walk #1: The Historic Core Saturday, October 24 San Francisco is a city best discovered on foot, and its hills have stories to tell! Join me as we launch our journey to explore San Francisco’s legendary 48 hills, one adventure at a time. This first walk is roughly 6 miles with just under 1000 feet accumulated gain. Our first walk begins at the Ruth Asawa Fountain on Stockton Street, between the Grand Hyatt and Apple Store. From there, we’ll wander into the colorful streets of Chinatown, climb to the grandeur of Nob Hill, explore the charm and views of Russian Hill, descend into North Beach, and make our way up Telegraph Hill before finishing at the Ferry Building. Along the way, we’ll uncover hidden corners, fascinating history, spectacular views, and some of the stories that make San Francisco such an extraordinary city. As a fourth-generation San Franciscan, I’ll share a few personal connections to the city along with the history and discoveries. Important details: * Meeting point: Ruth Asawa Fountain, Stockton Street * Finish: Ferry Building (this is not a loop) * Difficulty: Moderate to challenging, with several significant climbs * Bring: Comfortable walking shoes, water, layers, and your curiosity! This is just the beginning of our exploration of San Francisco’s 48 hills. Come discover the city from a different perspective, one hill and one story at a time!

Bayview Hill and Candlestick Point

In January we had a wonderful sunny winter afternoon exploring Candlestick Point in the south east of the city; thanks to an initial suggestion from a regular, we have climbed Bayview Hill three times over the years now. As we were in the area on January, I pondered combining the two features, and that is what we will do on the 24th. Starting from Visitacion Valley we will explore the Greenway, climb the hill, enjoy the views, and then follow the water's edge on the way around the Point. There is some gentle climbing to get us going and one steep climb to get up the hill, plus some dirt as we go around the park. *Bringing water, snacks, and layers for all the microclimates is the way to go.* *These roams are offered by donation. They are one way I am able to pay my rent in San Francisco.* *Punctuality is always appreciated, for the sake of everybody's time. Please send a message on the app before the start if you are running late, and we will either wait (up to ten minutes) of I will direct you on how to catch up. Once we get underway I have to focus on those who are there, and most likely won't respond.* *Generally half the people who sign up don't actually show up on the day. I do track flakiness and remove people who have a poor attendance record. It is discourteous to those on the waitlist who would like to attend.* *Sending me a message explaining that you can't make it is always appreciated.*

We meet in front of the Ferry Building at 11 am, leaving at 11:15 to walk to Francisco Park to view the Blue Angels. This walk is approximately 2 miles to Francisco park. Restrooms and water fountain available. Bring water, food and dress for the weather.
