Urban Athletics: NYC at Night Bike Ride
Fri, Aug 28, 11:45 PMNew York is a completely different city after dark. During the day, people are out riding bikes, soaking up the sunshine, and pretending they enjoy paying $8 for coffee. But once the sun goes down, most cyclists tuck their bikes away and head home. That’s like ordering a pizza, throwing away the cheese, and proudly announcing that the crust was the best part. You're missing half the experience. If you're a fellow night owl—or simply someone with questionable sleep habits—come join me for a late-night ride through the city. **The plan...** We'll meet in Union Square and pedal our way around some of New York City's most iconic landmarks. They're impressive during the day, but at night they transform into something even better: beautifully illuminated and, in some cases, suspiciously free of tourists. Our route includes the Washington Square Arch, the Brooklyn Bridge, South Street Seaport, the World Financial Center, Lincoln Center, Columbus Circle, the Plaza Hotel fountain, the glowing Apple cube, the sensory overload that is Times Square, the New York Public Library and its famous stone lions, and the Flatiron Building. We'll also do a loop through Central Park after dark, stopping at Bethesda Fountain and Belvedere Castle—because nothing says “good decision-making” like wandering through a giant park at midnight with a bunch of strangers from the internet. **The important stuff...** * The ride will be about 28 miles round trip at a casual pace of roughly 12 mph. If midnight is normally when you transform back into a pumpkin, this may not be the meetup for you—we'll be out late. * We'll stick to bike lanes whenever possible, but the city planners, in their infinite wisdom, neglected to place protected lanes directly in front of every famous attraction. You should be comfortable riding in traffic. Helmets and bike lights are absolutely required, both for safety and to improve your odds of being seen by taxis. * Please make sure your bike is in good working order before the meetup. Bring a lock, a spare tube, a patch kit, and a pump. New York has many wonderful qualities, but fixing your flat at 1:00 a.m. on the side of the road is not one of them. * Check your email before heading out for any last-minute updates and my phone number, which will be sent to everyone who RSVPs. * And speaking of RSVPs: please only sign up if you genuinely plan to come. Space is limited, and "I totally meant to make it" sadly does not propel a bicycle. Serial no-shows and last-minute cancellers may be removed from the event. * Sorry, no guests for this one. * Rain cancels the meetup, because while we enjoy adventure, recreating scenes from The Dark Knight on two wheels is a bridge too far.

Randalls Island Full Moon and Picnic Ride
Fri, Aug 28, 10:15 PMFull Moon Ride! Friday, August 28 will be a full moon. Want to ride with Brompton friends to Randalls Island and enjoy a moonlit picnic? This is a chill ride with equal emphasis on riding, socializing and enjoying the NYC evening sky. *This ride is for Brompton bicycles only.* **Meeting/Departure** We'll meet at the southeast corner of Queensbridge Park and depart punctually after 15 minutes of socializing. (Note: We need to depart on time due to timing with the sunset). Then we'll bike up to Astoria Park and cross the RFK bridge to Randall’s Island. **Sunset** We'll stop to enjoy the sunset from Astoria Park and from the RFK Bridge. **Full Moon** We'll spread our blankets at the southern tip of Randalls Island and watch the moon rise and city lights in all their splendor. **Picnic** Please bring your own beverage, picnic blanket, and snacks to share. **Return** Feel free to depart earlier, but we'll exit the island as a group around 10:00, crossing the 103rd Street Bridge to Manhattan. We'll bike down the East River and end the ride at the Manhattan side of the Queensboro Bridge. (There are path closings on the East River, so we will need to bike on 2nd Avenue for parts of this.) You can exit the ride wherever you're close to home, or bike with us to Brooklyn if that's your destination. **Route** You can view the route on [Ride with GPS](https://ridewithgps.com/routes/47093411) **What to bring** * Head light and tail light are essential * Picnic blanket if you have one * Picnic snacks or food to share * Your own beverages The bathrooms on Randalls Island are often closed, so please plan accordingly. There are no services, so make sure to bring enough food and drink. If want you to join at Randall's Island at 7:45pm, let us know in the comments. This ride is all about the evening sky. Rainy, drizzly or very cloudy weather will cancel this ride. **Please maintain your RSVP** If you can't attend, please update your RSVP so someone from the waiting list can have your spot. Riders with a history of "no shows" may be removed from the ride in favor of others on the waiting list. **Please respect the waiting list** We need to maintain our maximum rider-to-ride-leader ratio, so please respect the waiting list, thanks! Our Community Rules: 1. Be kind. Welcome and encourage other riders. Insults, shaming, and hate will be removed, and offenders will be banned. 2. Your safety is your responsibility. Helmets are required. Lights are required if riding in darkness. It is each rider’s responsibility to ensure their bike is clean, well-maintained, and fully functional. 3. This is a Brompton only event. Contact Brompton Junction if you'd like to borrow a Brompton for this event (participation may vary). 4. If your plans change, please update your RSVP. Brooklyn Shoreway Bike Ride
Sat, Aug 29, 2:00 PMBicycle on a paved, car-free path along the ocean. We loved this ride last week because of the lovely smell of the sea breeze and the birds and the boats. We’ll meet in Owl’s Head Park on the benches near the (clean) restrooms. You can rent a NYC Citi Bike ten minutes away if you don’t have one. Then we’ll bike along the water for about an hour, have a snack and return the way we came. It’s five miles from Owl’s Head to Calvert Vaux Park, but you can do as much or as little as you like - or even continue on to Coney Island if you were feeling energetic. We’re just getting back into biking, so the pace will be civilized: 8-12 mph. Things to bring are water, snacks, sunscreen. Adults are not legally required to wear helmets in New York, but it would make Nurse Natalie so happy if you did.
