Making Belonging: Story, Design & Social Practice

What does it mean to make a place where people feel they belong? And what changes when we make it together? Join us for an evening of experimentation as students from Columbia University share a series of prototypes exploring belonging. Through story, design, play, and participation, we'll look at social practice as an act of co-creation, making things with people rather than simply for them. The evening will move between prototypes, conversation, and collective experimentation, asking how the spaces we create—physical, digital, or somewhere in between can invite connection, agency, and a sense of belonging. We'll be joined by **Romy Nehme**, an experience and strategy designer, writer, and member of the Columbia Digital Storytelling Lab whose work sits at the intersection of storytelling, imagination, design, and systems change. Romy helped launch New_ Public, bringing a placemaking ethos to the design of digital spaces, and through her practice Beautiful Seams explores how narrative and experience design can help people imagine and shape different futures. If arriving late, please leave a comment on this page and someone will come down ASAP. **Description** In 2009, a dramatic accident in Central Park profoundly altered my life trajectory, instantly becoming 1 in 4 people worldwide living with significant disabilities. Ever since, I've navigated the world in a wheelchair, relearning what it means to be a New York father, Google Maps engineer, and athlete. Despite the challenges, though, I've more frequently found gratitude, purpose, and even joy in the vast, strong community of people with disabilities. Gratitude for all we've accomplished in the last half-century, and both purpose and joy in working with disabled folk and allies to extend those gains. In the physical world, fighting and winning a subway accessibility lawsuit, and online, adding disability-aware data and features to Google Maps so people of all abilities can "know before we go" if a place and route are a good choice. **Presenter bio** [Sasha Blair-Goldensohn](www.linkedin.com/in/sasha-blair-goldensohn-429a5125b) leads Google Maps accessibility and disability innovation projects, helping people worldwide find accessible places and routes. WTF (Weekly Tuesday Folders)

**PLEASE NOTE: TIME IS NOW 6:00 to 8:00PM** **NEW LOCATION:** OMG NYC (Origami Meetup Group! New York City) is a group for people to come together and share in the beautiful art of Origami - an ancient art of folding various mediums, most commonly paper. The word comes from the combination of the Japanese verb oru (to fold) and the noun kami (paper). Other materials often folded are fabric, wire mesh, sheet metal, tissue, thin plastic, cardboard, and straws. We meet as a group to teach each other new models and share paper, books, and tips. This meeting is free and open to all level of folders from beginners to advanced. There will be free paper available to share. You can bring your own paper and books, so you can just show up and fold! If you have models you would like to learn, or teach, let us know and we will try our best to accommodate. OMG NYC's WTF (Weekly Tuesday Folders) meetup is now located at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library at 455 5th Avenue. The meeting is on the 3rd floor in room 303.
