We will provide everything you need to embark on this journey, from character sheets to dice. Don't miss out on this opportunity to experience the rich storytelling and immersive gameplay that Dungeons & Dragons has to offer! This session will also have workshops on Intro to DMing, Character Development, rules, and overall intro. RSVP to join the session, once the game is full you can add your name to the waitlist. 🌙 INVITATION TO MOONLIGHT ACADEMY 🌙 Dungeons & Dragons Campaign Who: Beginners and veteran players are equally welcome. The doors to the academy are opening—both in Hollywood and in the Forgotten Realms. You are formally invited to cross the threshold into a living story of survival, ancient magic, and cosmic defiance. 📖 The Legend So Far (Our Story Synopsis) Deep within the untamed Whispering Woods stands Moonlight Academy, a monolithic, forgotten fortress of ancient celestial magic. For centuries it lay in ruins, choked by briars and feared by the outside world. Today, two desperate fugitives have sought refuge within its hollow halls, bound by shared isolation: Vhaenyra Aelarys: A Drow (Dark Elf) Druid who fled the lethal, cutthroat politics of the Underdark. She has claimed the ruins as a sanctuary, using her nature magic to gently heal the stone and restore the academy to its former glory—a promised haven for outcasts. Leucis Therai: A queer Tiefling Cleric who narrowly escaped a horrific ritual sacrifice by his former coven. Betrayed by his lover, his desperate prayers at the castle gates awakened a dormant, divine moon deity within the ruins, transforming him into a vessel of radiant starlight. The world outside is closing in. Insular, paranoid local villagers view the Academy as a den of monsters and are preparing for war. Fraudulent local psychics are stirring up anti-magic panic. Meanwhile, lethal assassins from the Underdark and vengeful witches from the coven are tracking the duo’s magical signatures. Will Moonlight Academy rise to become a permanent stronghold for the marginalized, or will it be burned to the ground by fear and vengeance? That is up to you. 🔮 Choose Your Path: How You Can Join the Circle As a recurring campaign, players can drop in and out as their schedules allow. Moonlight Academy is actively looking for allies, refugees, and travelers to help fortify its walls. When creating a character, you can choose from three main thematic paths: 1. The Academy Refuges & Outcasts Like Vhaenyra and Leucis, your character is someone traditionally feared, misunderstood, or hunted by common society. You have fled your past and found safety behind the academy’s walls.Recommended Classes: Sorcerers, Warlock (seeking a break from a bad patron), Rogue, or Bard.Recommended Races: Tiefling, Drow, Orc, Changeling, or any lineage seeking a safe haven. 2. The Guardians of the Wild You are a local protector of the Whispering Woods, a rogue element from the nearby settlements, or a member of a local, secret coven. You see through the paranoia of the villagers and have chosen to ally with Vhaenyra to restore the natural balance and protection of the Academy. Recommended Classes: Druid, Ranger, Nature/Twilight Cleric, or Barbarian. Recommended Races: Wood Elf, Firbolg, Halfling, or Human. 3. The Redeemed & Detached Perhaps you were originally sent to spy on the academy, or you were an acolyte from Leucis's old coven who realized the leadership went too far. You have turned your back on your former masters to help defend the ruins from within. Recommended Classes: Fighter, Paladin (Oath of Devotion or Ancients), or Monk. Recommended Races: Any race aligned with a complicated backstory of redemption. ✨ How to Secure Your Seat at the Table Spaces at the gaming table are limited each week to ensure everyone gets a chance to shine. Character Creation: Start at Level 1. Use standard rules (5th Edition). If you need help building your character, arrive 30 minutes early and our Dungeon Master will help you weave your backstory directly into the fabric of Moonlight Academy. WHAT IS THIS EVENT? At **Indie RPG Night** we gather to play story games and independent role-playing games (RPGs). These games are similar to role-playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) but tend to be simpler to learn, and have more shared narrative control for all players. WHO IS THIS FOR? Any experience level is welcome, with no prior knowledge required. Almost all games are meant to be played in a single night (sometimes called *one-shots* or *episodic*), so no regular attendance is necessary. WHAT GAMES DO WE PLAY? We play games that allow us to come together to have a good time telling a story collaboratively. We do not generally play games with a win condition. Some games we play have a game master (GM) and players, similar to D&D. Other games are “GM-less” or "GM-ful", and have no game master, where the rules of the game have us share narrative authority so we all have similar control over the story. Some examples include: * Apocalypse World * Blades in the Dark * Dream Askew * Fiasco * For The Queen * The Quiet Year * Microscope WHAT GAMES DO WE AVOID? We avoid role-playing games that may require players to have prior knowledge of rules (which is often the case with RPGs such as D&D). Many of us love board and card games, however this is not the event for those games. Note that some story games have elements that may look like board and card games, however we play games that share our goal of coming together to collaboratively tell a story. Although some board games have narrative elements (such as Above and Below), or can be played in a narrative manner (such as Arkham Horror), these do not meet our criteria. If you have any doubts, please talk to one of the organizers. It is also important that games played conform to our Community Standards (https://bit.ly/StoryGamesLA-CommunityStandards). WHERE AND WHEN IS THE EVENT? Locations vary so check the meetup event for the current location. On this night we play at **Geeky Teas & Games** in Burbank. We plan to meet up starting at 6pm, and pitch games promptly at 6:30pm. The venue closes at 10pm. Games tend to normally last 2-4 hours. Note that Geeky Teas requires a $8 cover fee that you pay directly to them upon entry to the venue. HOW DO I ATTEND? If you plan on attending, please RSVP here. We have tables reserved but space may be limited, so we will prioritize people who RSVP if we end up having too many folks. We will try to accommodate everyone best as possible. If your plans change, please update your RSVP as early as possible so we have an accurate count. You should not need to bring anything with you, however always feel free to bring writing utensils, dice, note cards, and so on. WHAT ARE THE RULES? We try to provide an inclusive space, and do not tolerate harassment or prejudice of any kind, including that based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender, or disabilities.
