Brain Worms 121 / The Word for World is Forest by Ursula K. Le Guin

From Brain Worms Book Club
4.8

When the inhabitants of a peaceful world are conquered by the bloodthirsty yumens, their existence is irrevocably altered. Forced into servitude, the Athsheans find themselves at the mercy of their brutal masters. Desperation causes the Athsheans, led by Selver, to retaliate against their captors, abandoning their strictures against violence. But in defending their lives, they have endangered the very foundations of their society. For every blow against the invaders is a blow to the humanity of the Athsheans. And once the killing starts, there is no turning back. Available from all good libraries and book shops. You don't have to have read it to join us - but it'll probably help. We will be meeting in The Ludski Bar in the Rio Cinema. [https://www.riocinema.org.uk/your-visit/](https://www.riocinema.org.uk/your-visit/) You are welcome to bring outside food in with you but please buy your drinks from inside the cinema. Thank you. Sat, Jul 18, 9:00 AM
From Railway Adventures on the High Teas

We will take the javelin railway from St Pancras to visit the historic towns of Rye & Winchelsea in East Sussex. Rye is a medieval town suspended in time with cobbled streets & ancient passageways leading to Tudor & Georgian architectural treasures. The town has several medieval churches & the Ypres Tower which affords fine views along the coast . Rye has many literary links; Henry James & EF Benson lived here & set some of their works in the town. Winchelsea is an “Antient town” one of the original Cinque Ports. Built in the 13th century on the orders of Edward 1, it is the best preserved medieval Bastide towns in Southern England. The stone gateways within the town walls allow access to the captivating town with many fine Georgian streets. Winchelsea has many links to artists; Turner & Millais were inspired by its charms Plan is to alight in Winchelsea to explore the town before having lunch at the pub by the town square. We will then do the 1066 walk passing Camber Castle to reach Rye. Walk is around 4 miles. We will then explore Rye with a late afternoon tea stop in one of the tea gardens. Regular trains back so people can leave at any time. Option for a coastal walk after to Camber Sands & beaches. Meet from 10.00am at Benugo cafe, balcony opposite Betjeman statue. 3RD THOUGHT EXPERIMENT WRITING WORKSHOP: cultivate curiosity :-)

3RD THOUGHT EXPERIMENT WRITING WORKSHOP: cultivate curiosity :-)

Thu, Jul 30, 6:00 PM
From THOUGHT EXPERIMENTS IN PUBS
4.8

A creative process to free your mind, and explore fresh perspectives. The first two workshops sold out, so here's another opportunity :-) Over the past 3 and a half years, I've written over 300 thought experiments and learned a lot along the way. [Here's a bit more about why I enjoy the practice.](https://experimentsingroupwisdom.substack.com/p/writing-thought-experiments) In brief, **the creative practice of writing thought experiments gives you the opportunity to:** * investigate ideas (old and new) * work your imagination * write creatively and playfully * produce compelling conversation starters that you can share with friends and strangers to provoke great discussions **In this workshop,** I'll share my process and together we'll create new thought experiments by: * Identifying areas of interest * Gathering ingredients for thought experiments * Imagining scenarios * Constructing narratives * Generating relevant, thought provoking questions * Participating in a round of small group discussions - you can volunteer your new thought experiment, or if you'd rather, you can pick one out of the hat. **By the end of the evening** **we'll have** * had some thought provoking conversations * become familiar with a new method for creative thinking * written our own original material for future group discussions :-) Although we’ll be learning a new technique we'll also be aiming to have **an enjoyable evening, with good humour and fun**. This will be less like school and more like a fun TEiP night out with an additional creative twist. **Who should come:** Everyone! We believe that the more perspectives, the richer the conversation. This group is not about being experts, it is about thinking creatively together and learning new ways to develop and communicate ideas. **Tickets** Space is limited (15-20) people and tickets are £15. I'd like to make this event accessible, so if cost is a barrier, please send me a DM. **Where we'll meet:** The Fitzroy Tavern in Fitzrovia. The nearest Tube stations are Goodge Street and Tottenham Court Road. We'll be upstairs in the Private Dining Room. Looking forward to meeting & talking with you!
