Brain Worms 120 / Serotonin by Michel Houellebecq

Brain Worms 120 / Serotonin by Michel Houellebecq

Tue, Jul 7, 6:00 PM
From Brain Worms Book Club
4.8

Dissatisfied and discontent, Florent-Claude Labrouste feels he is dying of sadness. His young girlfriend hates him and his career as an engineer at the Ministry of Agriculture is pretty much over. His only relief comes in the form of a pill – white, oval, small. Recently released for public consumption, Captorix is a new brand of anti-depressant which works by altering the brain’s release of serotonin. Armed with this new drug, Labrouste decides to abandon his life in Paris and return to the Normandy countryside where he used to work promoting regional cheeses, and where he had once been in love. But instead of happiness, he finds a rural community devastated by globalisation and European agricultural policies, and local farmers longing, like Labrouste himself, for an impossible return to what they remember as the golden age. Written by one of the most provocative and prophetic novelists of his generation, Serotonin is at once a devastating story of solitude, longing and individual suffering, and a powerful criticism of modern life. Available from all good libraries and book shops. You don't have to have read it to join us - but it'll probably help. We will be meeting in The Ludski Bar in the Rio Cinema. Steam Railway Day Out in Kent

Steam Railway Day Out in Kent

Sat, Jul 11, 8:30 AM
From Railway Adventures on the High Teas
4.7

Day out in Weald of Kent. The Spa Valley steam railway passes through the unspoilt beauty of the Kentish Weald ( Oast houses and orchards) with stops at historic villages, Jacobean palaces and Georgian resorts. We take the Southern service to Eridge to connect with the Spa valley steam railway which shares Eridge mainline station. Joining the Spa Valley railway we alight at High Rocks halt. We can explore the acres of breathtaking sandstone rocks, reached via 11 rope bridges. We plan to picnic in the gardens of the Victorian era hotel. We will then walk through the Wealden forests following the Wealdway before crossing Tunbridge Wells Common. At Tunbridge we can take the reinvigorating Chalybeate waters whilst exploring the Georgian splendour of the Spa resort. We will have late afternoon teas on the collonnaded Pantiles. From Tunbridge we travel back by steam train back to Eridge for trains back to London. Walk is easy route via good paths. Approximately 3 miles in total. Option to do another walk from Groombridge Halt around Groombridge Place (Jacobean Stately home) and walk across High Weald with great views over valley. Meet at Victoria Station, 9.30 am at Weatherspoons bar cafe on balcony over Smiths, facing EAST of station. We will have Maconie book (adventures on high teas) & Bradshaw on table to identify group. We will arrange saver tickets and take train from Victoria direct to Eridge. Cost of event is £3 to organiser on the day. Return to London, regular trains back so people can return to London at any time required.
