Where is My Mind?

Where is My Mind?

Thu, Jul 2, 1:00 AM
From San Francisco Philosophy Reading Group
4.8

For this session, we'll be reading and discussing two papers, [The Extended Mind](https://consc.net/papers/extended.html) by Clark and Chalmers and [Biosemantics](https://www.researchgate.net/publication/235734046_Biosemantics) by Millikan. How does the mind connect to the world around us, and where do our thoughts actually happen? These two papers challenge the old idea that the mind is locked away inside the brain. Instead, they show that our thinking relies heavily on a deep, active partnership with our environment. Millikan looks at this from an evolutionary standpoint. She argues that the true meaning of a thought or signal isn’t decided by whatever triggered it, but by the "consumer"—the biological parts of us designed to read that signal and use it to survive. Clark and Chalmers take this idea a step further into the physical world. They argue that when we rely on external tools in our daily lives—like an Alzheimer's patient using a notebook to keep track of memories—the tool and the brain team up to form a single, working cognitive system. If a tool does the exact same job as a piece of the brain, they argue it counts as part of our mind

Gaga (Handball/Dodgeball variation) & Other Lawn Games @ Alameda Gaga Court

Gaga (Handball/Dodgeball variation) & Other Lawn Games @ Alameda Gaga Court

Sun, Jun 28, 8:00 PM
From Bay Area Social Scene
4.7

Join us for games of **GAGA**! Gaga is similar to handball and is a low-impact, fast moving fun game that rotates players quickly, so its a great way to meet new people and keep moving! The location of the court on Alameda island is here: [https://maps.app.goo.gl/VeqmD6oz6AbAksYB8 ](https://maps.app.goo.gl/VeqmD6oz6AbAksYB8) The rules of Gaga are super simple and as follows: * *All players start with one hand touching a wall of the pit.* * *The game begins with a referee throwing the ball into the center of the pit.* * *Once the ball is in play, any player can hit the ball with an open or closed hand.* * *If a ball touches a player below the knee (even if the player hits himself or herself) they are out and they leave the pit. If a player is hit above the knees, the play continues.* * *Players cannot hold the ball* If you have any other games like spike ball, cornhole, or soccer or volleyballs, please feel free to bring them as well! We will have some additional activities set up on the sides for people to play and socialize while in between games of gaga.

Laser Cutter Safety Training

Laser Cutter Safety Training

Sun, Jun 28, 9:00 PM
From Noisebridge Hackerspace
4.8

Learn how to be safe while using the laser cutter! We have a 150W, CO2 laser cutter with a 3 x 4 ft bed. This training is required to use the laser cutter because we don't want people setting our most expensive equipment donation on fire. You have to do this training even if you were trained at the old space, as we have different safety features now. Training covers * Dangers of the laser cutter * How to be safe * How to put out a fire Each participant will cut a piece of cardboard on the laser cutter while following all the safety steps. This is also a good place to ask questions about specific materials or projects. There is a 5$ fee to register, and we suggest a 20-30$ donation for this class: https://donate.noisebridge.net. If the registration fee is a barrier to your participation, please reach out to the event organisers.

Volleyball. Training and Playing.

Volleyball. Training and Playing.

Sat, Jun 27, 4:00 PM
From Ocean Beach Volleyball Training and Playing. San Francisco
4.9

1001 Great Hwy, San Francisco. Stairwell #17 across from the Beach Chalet. 9:00 start time. Ocean Beach Volleyball Meetup is a training-and-play event for players who want to get better, not just jump straight into games. Everyone starts with three short phases of VBX Volleyball training before open play. VBX is a no-net training system that helps players improve faster by giving them more touches, more rallies, and more chances to read, move, pass, set, and attack in game-like situations. After the VBX warm-up and skill-building phases, players move onto the nets for open play. As the group keeps improving, we’ll also set up more courts geared toward doubles play for players who want a faster, more competitive challenge. All levels are welcome, but the goal is simple: train first, play better, and build a stronger Ocean Beach volleyball community. Let me know how I may help you! Come train, play, and grow with us. See you on the sand! Coach Dale VBX Volleyball Systems 😊🏐😎 Questions? Message me here.
