Short Reads Social #12: "Why Don't We Dream of Labour?" (Aug 25th)

Short Reads Social #12: "Why Don't We Dream of Labour?" (Aug 25th)

Tue, Aug 25, 10:30 PM
From Book Club for Humans
4.6

Short-Read Socials are back! Come meet with like-minded and unlikeminded people to talk about the topic of the month. This time, we're thinking about **work and meaning.** *Why do some people feel like their work is meaningless? Is some work more inherently "meaningful" than others? Should work be something that necessarily has to fulfill us in the first place?* \-\-\- **How does it work?** * The event is casual. You can talk to anyone there with or without our prompt sheets, either about the month's topic or about whatever you want. * Open philosophical discussion, including for controversial topics, is welcome but be respectful :) * If you've read/watched/heard anything related to the topic of the month, feel free to bring it in! Not necessarily physically, but you can if you want... * If not, here are some thought-provoking reads to start you off (read as many or as few as you want): * [Why Is Everyone In Tech So Sad?](https://www.noemamag.com/why-is-everyone-in-tech-so-sad/) * [Workism Is Making Americans Miserable](https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2019/02/religion-workism-making-americans-miserable/583441/) (paywall-free version [here](https://archive.is/20260808071246/https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2019/02/religion-workism-making-americans-miserable/583441/)) * [The Nature of Meaningless Work](https://thestillwandering.substack.com/p/the-nature-of-meaningless-work?r=2zfszx&utm_medium=ios&triedRedirect=true) * [What do Japan’s hikikomori reveal about our lonely world?](https://psyche.co/ideas/what-do-japans-hikikomori-reveal-about-our-lonely-world) * And as a throwback to our second book club meeting ever, Chapter 6: Why Do We as a Society Not Object to the Growth of Pointless Employment? of [David Graeber's Bullshit Jobs](https://nextcloud.quackhouse.ca/s/DMqpQD8wSR8WPcy) (pages 103-135 in the pdf or 193-244 in the text) * Feel free to post other recommendations (blogs, movies, tv episodes, video essays, etc.) in the comments!

QT Connect Meetup Toronto - Q3 2026

QT Connect Meetup Toronto - Q3 2026

Wed, Sep 9, 9:00 PM
From QueerTech Toronto
5.0

## Governance & Accountability — Who Is Responsible When AI Goes Wrong Technology is moving quickly, and many people are still trying to understand how AI is already shaping work, opportunity, creativity, well-being, and everyday life. In Toronto—where platform technology, gaming, creative industries, startups, and digital work are deeply connected to everyday life—questions around fairness, visibility, accountability, and trust are becoming increasingly personal. This QT Connect meetup creates space for community conversation, reflection, and collective sense-making. As part of QueerTech’s 2026 national theme, *Who Gets to Trust AI?*, this community conversation explores where bias, exclusion, and harm enter AI systems—and what protections communities need before those harms scale further. **Date:** Wednesday, September 9, 2026 **Time:** 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM **Location:** Wealthsimple - 80 Spadina Ave., 4th Floor, Toronto, ON **[Register here](https://queertech.org/en/events/271451)**.

Making the case for service design

Making the case for service design

Fri, Aug 21, 10:30 PM
From Service Design Drinks Toronto
4.7

How do you communicate the value of service design at your workplace? Where does your team stand, **and** what is your role within it? We all know service design creates value, but pinpointing exactly *where* your org stands, and what role you should be playing to move it forward, is a different skill entirely. This session is about getting clearer on that. **Format:** Design jam **What to expect:** * A quick icebreaker * Opening context — a fast recap of the article and why it matters * A spotlight share — one person walks us through where their own org sits on the model, and what that's actually looked like in practice * Main activity — working solo, then in pairs, then as a full table * A quick close — one small thing to try shifting this month **To get ahead:** Read the [Service Design Maturity Model article;](https://service-design-network.org/community_article/the-service-design-maturity-model-a-strategic-framework-to-embed-service-design-into-an-organisation) it's a quick one, and it'll give us a shared language for the night. The model breaks organizational SD maturity into five stages Explore, Prove, Scale, Integrate, Thrive) and tracks how a service designer's role shifts through each: from scout > doer > trainer > facilitator > leader. No need to have it all figured out before you arrive. Just come ready to think out loud with a few new people. See you there!
