Fireside Chat: Wildfires, Climate Change, and is it Too Late to do Something?
Tue, Aug 25, 9:00 PMJoin us for our very first first event on **Tuesday, August 25 at 5:00 PM** by the fire pit in Trillium Park! This one is sponsored by Apathy is Boring and their Table Topics initiative, so if anything you should come for the **FREE FOOD!** Three weeks ago, Toronto ranked first place in worst air quality in the world as we woke up to orange skies caused by wildfire smoke drifting in from northern Ontario. It was a sobering reminder that the climate crisis isn't going away, and sooner or later we are going to have to confront it. Come sit by the fire, roast some marshmallows, and have some thought-provoking discussions about what we can do better as a society. **The Agenda** * 5:00-5:05 - Introductions, explanation of the group and topic of the week. * 5:05-5:25 - Facilitator recaps the climate policies proposed and delivered by the government on a federal, provincial and municipal level so that everybody is up to speed. * 5:25-5:30 - Questions and additional contributions by the rest of the group. * 5:30-7:30 - Break out into small groups (1 per rock) \- For the first 4 minutes\, discuss a question within your group\. \- For the next 4 minutes\, explain what you have come up with to the rest of the group and discuss\. \- Repeat until all 15 questions are done\. * The meeting is officially over by 7:30, but if nobody booked the fire pit afterwards you are free to stay and socialize. **Questions** 1. When did climate change first become something that felt real to you? 2. What part of climate change worries you the most? 3. What gives you hope when you think about our environmental future? 4. Do you think our current government is doing enough to address the issue? Why or why not? 5. What is the biggest barrier Canada faces to fighting climate change? 6. What could Canada do that would have the greatest impact internationally, rather than just domestically? 7. How should Canada balance environmental protection with industries like oil, gas, mining, and forestry? 8. If you could make one policy that you could make sure passes the parliament what would it be? 9. What are the responsibilities of an individual, a business, and the government in moving us towards a greener future? 10. How do we make sure that this is held accountable? 11. Does improving our carbon footprint on a meaningful level mean making making major changes to the way we live? How much are you willing to sacrifice? 12. When, if ever, is government justified in restricting people's choices for the sake of the environment? 13. If you could redesign one part of your city to make it dramatically more sustainable, what would you change? 14. Is there an environmental habit you’ve changed that you’re proud of? If not, what would you change? 15. Imagine it's 2050 and Canada has successfully dealt with climate change. What does everyday life look like? **[Join our Discord!](https://discord.gg/PxAsXAGfJj)**
