Sat, Aug 15, 7:30 AMD&D is a Structured Game Night, half boardgame, half improv, all guides by a storyteller host who can teach and run the play session. Expect it to go for about 2.5-3 hours, with time for chats and photos and food :) This is a sister event to the Ludos Melbourne Games' Guided Game Nights for Beginners, which means there is another event on meet up with people attending this game. ( https://www.meetup.com/melbourne-games ) Im trying to grow the community out, looking for our people. if your at least 3 of these things, this event is for you: - Likes fantasy stories, games, anime, books - Busy working most of the time (9-5/shift work) - Wants a relaxed social hangout, creative fantasy game, for beginners. - Newish to Melbourne, wants to make friends with people who fit the above ^ if that's you, I'm excited to show you the hobby that got me my first friends after I moved. To do that, here is the event: - Free Beginner Event (beginners only) - If you want, you can buy 1 or 2 more sessions at 80% the regular price, exclusive to attendees. - everything prepared for you, and optimised for a beginner night. **FAQ** **What should I expect?** An exciting night you'll tell your colleagues, roommates and friends back home about. Seriously, this will probably be the highlight of your week. **What should I bring?** Nothing but yourself. **What will happen when I get there?** you'll be greeted at the door by the host game master (story teller person) you'll be able to chat to them one-on-one, ask questions and receive a name tag sticker. then you'll be placed in a small team and be introduced to the storyteller who will lead your night. **Will I be the only girl?** Usually not. I normally see a ratio of 2 girls for every 3-4 guys, occasionally more girls. I can't guarantee on any given night what the numbers will be. but I can promise you that our game night is very inclusive and the gender ratio won't sour your night 😊 (if it does, let the host organiser (usually Jope) know during or after the event so he can quitely handle it) **Will I be the only old person/ young person?** We normally see anyone from ages 23 to about late '40s. but just like above, no guarantees on any given night, but don't expect that to sour the night. The Ludos Guild Beyond these Meetup events has all sorts of people, 80% of them young-mature professionals. **Will I slow people down if I don't get the game?** Totally not. We've been running this night for over 2 years and have gotten really good at teaching hundreds of people this game. Everyone is also super friendly and the game's cooperative. (people who arent, won't be invited back) **I'm worried I might show late?** yep, just message the organiser about what time you think you'll be there, and we'll see what we can do. **Do you have any other times? I'm busy on a Saturday...** We occasionally run on a Friday, message the organiser **What's a Ludos Guild?** Ludos meaning games, it's a private group of people who enjoy table top role playing games. This is not the Ludos Guild, this is our front door. A host may invite you to the guild, but only after you have joined two sessions with us. This requirement ensures you feel like you understand the gist of the game, and think you'll enjoy playing it for years to come. Our events include Dungeons and Dragons Campaigns, alternative role play games, painting sessions, and other events. Every fourth Friday we bring a selection of games from the club’s ever growing library as well as choice games from our own personal collections. Feel free to bring your own! **Venue change:** Due to works in the library activity room, we will be meeting at the Watsonia Neighbourhood House, 47 Lambourn Rd, Watsonia. \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\- What do we play? There will be a range of games available, from beginner to more experienced. We play modern board and card games that are fun and relatively easy to learn. We are more than happy for new people of all experience levels to come and we are always eager to teach. How about Food and Drinks? Enjoy some tea on the house. Or bring in your own meal or grab one from one of the fine local places in the neighbourhood.

Hong Kong Mahjong at Marché Board Game Cafe
Wed, Aug 12, 8:00 AM**NOTICE FOR JULY 2026** The next 4 weeks events for Hong Kong Mahjong will be held on every Thursday; the dates inclusive will be July 16th, July 23rd, July 30th, and August 6th. **NEW COMPETITION FOR HONG KONG MAHJONG GROUP** We have a new exciting competition and prizes for regular attendees to the Hong Kong Mahjong Group which will be run quarterly. Marche Board Game cafe has been generous enough to sponsor the prizes. The first competition session will include all weekly sessions run from July 16th 2026 up and until September 30th 2026 - from my account that is 12 sessions. **SYSTEM OF PLAY AND SCORING** As you play each week with others you will need to take note of your scores and provide me with the overall outcome for the table. Hopefully you will be able to complete 4 rounds during the course of each session on your table, however if this is not the case, then that is all fine. In order to score on the table we will utilise the Mahjong Camera app which is available on IOS. When you set up a game you will need to make the settings at Number of Rounds (4), Minimum Fan (3), Maximum Fan (10), and set the scoring to Half Spicy x 1. Utilising this scoring method it makes it more lucrative for a player to score higher Fan hands as you are rewarded exponentially more points. For example a 10 fan (point) hand where someone throws out to you will reward you with the maximum 128 points as opposed to a 3 fan (point) hand which will only give you 8 points. **POINT CALCULATION FOR QUARTER** Your best 7 sessions across the 12 sessions will be counted towards your score for the quarter. This allows for you to have a bad week or two and also provides you room to still be in the competition even if you cannot attend every week. **TALLY OF SCORES** Once the first session has been concluded I will provide a link here in the meet up to a google spreadsheet showing your weekly and overall scores so you can keep track. **THE PRIZES** The top 3 members for the quarter will receive prizes. First Prize - $100 Marche voucher Second Prize - $50 Marche voucher Third Prize - $25 Marche voucher **ABOUT THE MEET UP** Players of all skill levels are welcome to join us at Marché Board Games Cafe in the CBD for a casual night of mahjong - Right in the CBD. We'll start around 6:00pm till we all need to go home :) Our typical session concludes usually around 10:00pm. Please change your RSVP to not going if you're no longer able to attend, 24 hours prior the event. For those that have a record of non attendance without communicating, you will be moved to the waiting list for future events and be contacted directly to confirm that you indeed intend to turn up, at which you will be allotted a spot subject to availability. You have to stay on your toes, adapt frequently, and keep tabs on the other players, what they have played, and what they may play next! **Do I need to know how to play/have played a trick taking game before?** * Not at all, but it is good to understand the basics and general terminology so you can pick things up a bit easier on the night. We have limited capacity and must abide by it. **I don't have a game to bring, is that okay?** * Generally it will be okay, but it is encouraged to bring and share a game where you can! You can always bring a standard deck of cards or tarot cards and learn a card game or two as well! **Can I bring a guest?** * Unfortunately, unless they have signed up too it won't be possible. We have a strict limit on guests and the event would fill up too quickly otherwise. **How do I get to the venue?** * The 86 Tram is your best bet and has a stop pretty much right outside of the venue. * There are two train stations (Westgarth and Northcote) which are within walking distance. * Parking is available in the area but can get busy. If you don't mind a little walk there is parking down the adjacent street. **Dave, I worry you will win all the games we play. Such an intelligent and beautiful man, you must be a master of the tricks, is this true?** * Firstly - thank-you for the kind words, but secondly - no. I suck at trick taking games and lose more than I win. Yet, I enjoy them for their variety, high interaction, and quick nature regardless. You will be fine if you don't take things too seriously. It's about fun and meeting people... (but if you do beat me too often I will ban you from the group and venue...).
