National Portrait Gallery Treasure Hunt - can you find the treasure?
Sat, Nov 7, 1:30 PMCome along on Saturday 7th November for a treasure hunt around the National Portrait Gallery! The treasure hunts are a good way to get to know a museum, gallery or area whilst meeting new people. This treasure hunt is based on some of the most famous paintings in the gallery. **About the gallery** The National Portrait Gallery houses portraits of historically important and famous British people, selected on the basis of the significance of the sitter, not that of the artist. The collection includes photographs and caricatures as well as paintings, drawings and sculpture. When the gallery opened in 1856, it was the first portrait gallery in the world. It currently houses over 10,000 paintings. **How it works** Come along at 1:30pm and you will be randomly divided into teams of 3 people (or you can choose your own team beforehand). For fairness, any London Guides or Blue Badge Tour Guides won't be allowed to take part. Then each team will be given 15-20 written clues which you have to find the answers for. It's up to your team to work together to find the answers. You can answer them in any order and you will be provided with a map of the gallery to help you. It's not a race, so you can take your time getting to know the gallery. The answers to the clues will be found on the information cards of the paintings or in the painting itself. The treasure hunts are a good way to get to know the gallery whilst meeting and getting to know new people! **Prizes** The team to get the most correct answers and then return to base (a local pub or cafe) will win book vouchers for Waterstones bookshops of £10 per person. If more than one team gets the top score, there will be a tie break question back at the pub. Shanty Singing at the William Morris Pub
Wed, Nov 4, 7:00 PMFirst Wednesday of every month, upstairs at the William Morris Pub. Free entry and house drinks are half price between 6pm and 7pm. We sing three sets of eight songs, plus a few requests. We hand out chorus sheet books to all guests, and get 90% audience participation by way of them joining in singing the choruses. The pub has its own kitchen downstairs and cooks good quality reasonably priced food, which looks good and smells good, just like us. The pub is situated in picturesque Merton Abbey Mills on the River Wandle, only ten minutes walk from Colliers Wood tube station. Thames Foreshore Visit - Putney (Full Members only)
Sun, Nov 1, 11:00 AMRunning through the heart of London; the River Thames has played a central role in the history of the city, and when the tide is low, the capital’s longest archaeological site is revealed. Come along on Sunday 1st November to explore London’s dynamic history... **About the foreshore** I will be your guide as we will be going down to the Thames foreshore at low tide, where we will have about 1h 30mins to have a look around for objects before the tide comes in. I will tell you more about foreshore, the industry in the area and will be on hand to identify and date objects you find. Most objects you can spot sitting on the foreshore after being washed in on the tide (we are not allowed to dig or scrape the foreshore surface). You will find everything from bits of pottery, clay pipes, bottles, animal bones to ship items. Most of the things we find are from the Medieval to the Victorian period or you might be lucky and find something Roman or older. **The Thames Foreshore is private land, so before we go down, I have to give everyone a short talk on health & safety on the foreshore. As per the conditions of my group permit, you will need to be present for this, if you are late, I won't be able to accommodate you.** **Footwear** The foreshore is very stony and sometimes muddy, so please wear sensible shoes (preferably walking boots/shoes or wellington boots). The food is home cooked and the fish and ships smells and tastes delicious. We sing three sets of eight songs, and take a few requests. The audience all join in singing the choruses but here is quieter than some of our other venues.
