Marginalia Book Club: Reading Women in Translation

Marginalia Book Club: Reading Women in Translation

Wed, Nov 18, 6:00 PM
From Marginalia Book Club: Reading Women in Translation

Welcome to the inaugural book club meeting of Marginalia: Reading Women in Translation! For Wednesday, November 18, we'll be reading the first book of Danish author Solvej Balle's revolutionary septology[ ](https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/on-the-calculation-of-volume-i-shortlisted-for-the-international-booker-prize-2025-solvej-balle/347ed1da44f1da83?ean=9780571383375)***[On the Calculation of Volume](https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/on-the-calculation-of-volume-i-shortlisted-for-the-international-booker-prize-2025-solvej-balle/347ed1da44f1da83?ean=9780571383375)***, translated by Barbara J. Haveland\*.\* Shortlisted for the 2025 International Booker Prize, this novella wrings enthralling and magical new dimensions from time and its hapless, mortal subjects via an endless recursive day. As one Danish reviewer beautifully put it, Balle’s fiction consists of *writing that listens*: “Reading her is like being caressed by language itself.” The first meeting will be held in Neukölln at 7:00 PM. Exact location TBC, I will announce it closer to the event date in the chat.

English Book Club: Mother Mary Comes to Me by Arundhati Roy 📚

Sat, Nov 7, 5:00 PM
From Metis Book Clubs
5.0

Last month, 18 of us gathered around Han Kang's *The Vegetarian* for one of our liveliest discussions yet. Thank you to everyone who came! In November we take a bold step: our fiction book club reads a memoir by one of the great novelists of our time. **The book** In *Mother Mary Comes to Me*, Arundhati Roy, the Booker Prize-winning author of *The God of Small Things*, tells the story of her mother, Mary Roy. Mary was a brilliant, restless and formidable woman. She founded a school in Kerala and won a landmark legal battle for women's inheritance rights in India. She was also a mother who could be both a refuge and a storm. Roy writes about how her mother shaped her into the writer she became, and how that same mother came to resent it. The result is a portrait of two extraordinary women and of a love that is fierce, complicated and never simple. It is also, surprisingly, very funny. The memoir has been one of the most talked-about books of the past year: * National Book Critics Circle Award (biography) * One of The New York Times' 10 Best Books of 2025 * Shortlisted for the 2026 Women's Prize for Non-Fiction **Why read it together?** Everyone has a mother story. This book invites us to talk about our own families, about the people who shape us and about what we carry from them, and about where memory ends and storytelling begins. We're expecting a rich and personal conversation. **Who is this for?** Everyone who loves books and good conversation. The discussion is in English, and you're welcome whether you're a native speaker or not. Come along even if you're still halfway through the book, because your impressions matter more than the last page. New faces are always very welcome! **Join the club** Our members choose the next titles together in a small WhatsApp group. Ask us at the event and we'll happily add you. 📖 Copies of the book are available at Metis. Drop by and pick yours up! **Entry is free.** We're a small independent bookshop and café, so we're always happy when you order something during the evening. We look forward to seeing you there! ❤️

2nd Italian book club - Le perfezioni by Vincenzo Latronico

Tue, Nov 10, 6:00 PM
From Metis Book Clubs
5.0

**📅 Tuesday 10 November, 7 pm** Our Italian book club meets to talk about **Le perfezioni** by Vincenzo Latronico, the Berlin novel that became one of the international literary events of the past year. Anna and Tom are two young Italians living in Berlin: a bright apartment full of plants, Scandinavian furniture, creative digital jobs, long walks, aperitivi and nights out. It’s a life that looks perfect, especially on Instagram. Latronico follows them with a cool, precise and quietly ironic gaze, and slowly shows us what stays outside the frame. **Why this book?** ✨ Shortlisted for the International Booker Prize 2025 ✨ Named one of the books of the year by the New York Times, the New Yorker, the Economist and the Sunday Times ✨ Winner of the Premio Mondello and part of the Premio Strega “dozzina” ✨ Now on stage at the Volksbühne (Prater, Kastanienallee), with a film adaptation in development ✨ A short novel, just over a hundred pages, so there’s plenty of time to read it before we meet **Two dates, same book** We’re discussing the novel on two evenings so that everyone can join: **Wednesday 28 October** and **Tuesday 10 November**, both at 7 pm. Choose the one that suits you best, or come to both and see how the conversation changes. **How it works** 🗣️ The discussion is in Italian. All levels are welcome, as long as you can follow and join a conversation in Italian. 📖 The book (Einaudi Super ET edition) is available at Metis. You can also read it in English (*Perfection*) or German (*Die Perfektionen*) and join the discussion in Italian. ☕ Please support the bookshop with a drink or a bite from our café during the evening. Finalista all’International Booker Prize 2025, ora in scena alla Volksbühne. Due serate per lasciare a tutti la possibilità di esserci: **mercoledì 28 ottobre** e **martedì 10 novembre**, ore 19. Il libro è disponibile da noi in libreria. *** 📌 **Next up:** *Lo sbilico* by Alcide Pierantozzi (finalist, Premio Strega 2026), Friday 27 November, 7 pm. 📍 Metis Books & Café · Gleimstraße 21 · Prenzlauer Berg
