A Friday In The Canyon

Glen Canyon is a unique feature in the city - a peaceful oasis - and we haven't spent much time there recently, even though we often start roams from Glen Park. This Friday roam will take us from the south of the canyon to the north alongside Islais Creek, and back along the side of the hill. If we get lucky we might see a pair of coyotes as we did last time we were up on the slopes. In any case, we will sit on the rocks overlooking the creek valley. We will also have time to visit a couple of the famous dirt roads in the village. There will be a couple of climbs and plenty of dirt on the way round. *Bringing water, snacks, and layers for all the microclimates is the way to go.* *These roams are offered by donation. They are one way I am able to pay my rent in San Francisco.* *Punctuality is always appreciated, for the sake of everybody's time. *My scheduled trip to Tassajara next week has been cancelled due to smoke in the valley from the Timber fire in Big Sur, so I am adding a roam to the schedule.* After our roam south of Market, this will be another very flat and gentle roam through the industrial area served by Mission Creek. There is a lot of history here, albeit mostly covered up by landfill, and the rail tracks that used to fill the area are mostly gone, even though we can see the traces once we start looking. I have long wanted to wander round the elegant warehouses of the Design District, and thought to combine it with a walk along both banks of the creek, whose original estuary shaped this whole part of the city. *Bringing water, snacks, and layers for all the microclimates is the way to go.* *These roams are offered by donation. Last up for the month, on the 29th, is another roam that I have been thinking about for a while, but have been postponing, around SOMA - South of the Slot as it used to be known. This month the [Gene Friend Rec Center](https://sfrecpark.org/m/newsflash/home/detail/2990) has re-opened, so we will certainly stop by there. The germ for this one was actually a real estate listing that mentioned a street I had never heard of. We may or may not make it to that particular block, but there are any numbers of alleys and half-block streets in this area, which wears several layers of history on its sleeve. These days it is fairly well-known for those who live precariously, inside or out, and we may encounter folks like this on the way round; best not to come if this makes you nervous or uncomfortable, and of course I will do my best to navigate around potential hazards. Italian Dolomites Hiking and Multisport

**Benvenuti in Italia** This is the trip to Italy that you’ve always dreamed of – the Dolomites, wine, epic sunrises, lakes, and food. Call the craggy Italian Alps sirens home as you explore jaw-dropping trails and impossibly cute mountain villages on this 8-day women’s hiking adventure in northern Italy. We’ll meet in Venice before heading out for views of stunning glaciers, dramatic spires, and towering vistas complete with secret WWI tunnels. Our debut hike to Tre Cime di Lavaredo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (aka photogenic panty-dropper) where we’ll stay in a luxurious mountain “hut” and eat our body weight in alpine cooking. You’ll learn how to traverse via-ferrata style as we sling our powerful bodies across vertical rock walls to climb Monte Paterno. From there, we’ll shuttle to the iconic trailheads of Cinque Torri and Puez-Odle Nature Park, where we’ll spend the night sleeping in an authentic family-run hut high up in the mountains where even Starbucks can’t reach. Also, no, you don’t have to hulk your beefy Samsonite up the mountains. Throughout your adventure, you only have to sherpa your daypack. We’ll shuttle your main luggage from hut to hotel since you’ll have your hands full moonlighting for National Geographic. We’ll have down time in villages that can only be described as bucolic AF––including Cortina d’Ampezzo, Corvara, Ortisei, and the stunning South Tyrol wine region which we’ll explore by e-bike. Amidst all the hiking, including an epic sunrise climb, we’ll build in time for slow mornings and plenty of relaxing.
