NYCYDC - Intro to HAT Format

Ladies and Gentlemen, I am excited to announce the second Intro to HAT Night event, to be taking place tomorrow, August 11 at my apartment! Hat Format, also known as NAWCQ 2014 features the booster sets Dragons of Legend and Primal Origins as the last official releases. It is marked by thoughtful and skillful play, resource management, and a diversity of really well-designed archetypes. In advance of the tournament I plan to host, this night will be for those interested in play and learning more about the format. ALL MEMBERS ARE WELCOME! This is an opportunity for our established players to try out the format and also for our newer players to get a taste. If you do not have a HAT deck but want to come, don’t worry! We will have decks on hand to lend you to try out! Please note the following: No guests are allowed, with the exception of regular guests who have attended more than 5 Meetups in the past 3 months. Since this is my home, I have to have met you before I allow you in my home. If you have a HAT deck, bring it! If you don’t, come anyway! This will be a HAT only night! No Advanced format dueling! Home cocktail bar will be open! Come thirsty. New cocktails are always available to try! Feel free to come any time and stay as long as you like! BANLIST: Please note the Hat format Banlist can be found here: https://www.hatformat.com/banlist.html Also note: Number 106: Giant Hand is BANNED. Giant Hand was a prize card during HAT format and was one only a few players owned. It therefore doesn’t represent HAT format as it existed in 2014. My one exception is that anyone who owns a YCSW super or ultra Giant Hand is free to play that. RULES: First Turn Draw to 6 in hand. One Field Spell active at a time. If a new Field Spell is activated while one exists on board, the existing Field Spell is destroyed without starting a chain. Activating a Field Spell starts a chain. If MST is chained to the newly activated Field Spell, the existing Field Spell stays. A Field Spell set does not destroy an existing Field Spell Matches are 40 Minutes, but I might make them 50 minutes depending on player preference. Master Rule 2 (NO EXTRA MONSTER ZONE) Fusions, Synchros, XYZ only! No pendulum or link! Tournaments will be Swiss Rounds followed by a Single Elimination Top Cut, likely to 4 players. END OF MATCH PROCEDURE: I do not like Time Rules, so I prefer to have matches play out. It will be my decision on a case-by-case basis whether to institute End of Match procedure. Contrary to Advanced Format, matches are 40 minutes. When time is called, the rules will progress as follows: Current player completes turn: Play continues for an additional 5 turns. Highest life points WINS If life points are equal, the duel is a DRAW If game wins are equal, the match is a DRAW A duel begins only when a hand is drawn, not after Side-Decking or presenting your deck. Players may not intentionally DRAW

Tabletop Game Night

Every Saturday night we run Games With Strangers. Grab a drink or dinner, meet some new people, and learn a new game. Our game expert will teach you our featured games for the night and introduce you to your fellow players. We run games of all levels, from the lightest of the light to the ones that need four hours and a book. Each week we feature two games. Run a kingdom, build a farm, assemble your heroes, or craft the best story, but, whatever you do, come do it with us.

Tell the cashier that you're with “the Meetup” and they'll direct you to our tables in the back. Food and drink are available, and Hex has a large lending library you can choose from. All levels of game complexity are welcome, but we lean toward middle-to-heavy euros. Don't worry, teaching is a big part of our culture. **NEW TO THE MEETUP?** Thanks for coming! Bullying and bad-mouthing the other guests are also not tolerated. We're not here to debate politics, and we are not a dating service. Obviously gaming can sometimes include trash talking. Just … know if your opponents are up for that! And look, we all make mistakes -- if you’ve offended someone, an apology can go a long way. **QUESTIONS** **I’m relatively new to board gaming! Is this group for me?** Hi! Welcome to board gaming! Yes, it is. To make sure you have a great experience, please show up on time, before games get decided, and introduce yourself, telling people you’re new to gaming and what games you know and like. We were all new to gaming once, too. While most games we play are medium-to-heavy weight games, light games appear every week, so there's probably something for you. If you’re willing to stretch a bit and learn a more complex game, that’s great, as someone will almost always know how to teach it. To find out if players are willing to teach a game they’re about to start, just ask. Some experience with games like Azul, Catan, Splendor, Century Spice Road, 7 Wonders, Sagrada, etc., is helpful, but not essential. **What if I am on the waiting list?** It is rare that people on the waiting don't get seats, but it can happen. So you could just take a chance and show up. If you do show up, 1) ask employees up front if you can wait to pay (they're typically cool about that, but no promises here /shrug) and 2) come check in with us in the back. Seats for confirmed guests are held until 5:15, after which they're considered a no-show. (Unless they contact us first, or had something like an awful train ride.) Then seats are first-come first served. **Will someone teach me games if I don’t know them?** Often, yes - you just have to ask. But planning ahead can be helpful too, because that’ll give you a chance to read the rules before you come. **What do you mean by mid- and heavy-weight board games?** Some examples: Hansa Teutonica, Concordia, Keyflower, Great Western Trail, Clank!, Root, Small World, Scythe, Dinosaur Island, Terraforming Mars, Trickerion: Legends of Illusion, Kemet, Arcs, Underwater Cities, Food Chain Magnate, Indonesia, A Feast for Odin, Archipelago, Detective: City of Angels, and Tzolk'in. **Can we play *X*?** Sure! Suggest it. Make sure someone has a playable copy (you or the store), either you or someone else knows and can teach the game, and others agree to play. Games that take an exceedingly long time (4+ hours) probably won’t get picked up.

Queer Board Game Night is our monthly meetup for queer gamers to try the best of our 700+ game library and to hang out with the coolest people in Brooklyn (by our reckoning, anyway). Our host Finlay will get you settled and make sure you have everything you need to get conquering, guessing, and/or farming and our cafe will ensure that you have a beer or dinner to keep you at your best.
