Join me for a **90-minute evening walking tour through Cabbagetown**, where we'll explore some of the neighbourhood's strangest stories, unsettling legends, and darker pieces of Toronto's past. We'll begin beneath the glass of **Allan Gardens**, then make our way through the streets of Cabbagetown, stopping along the way for stories of mysterious creatures, haunted buildings, old prisons, cemeteries, restless spirits, and the people who may never have quite left. # 🍂 Fall Walk: From Rosedale to Cherry Street 🌿 ### A Fall Walk Through Some of Toronto's Most Interesting Neighbourhoods Looking for a walk that gives you a little bit of everything? We'll start in **Rosedale**, make our way through **Cabbagetown and Regent Park**, wander through the **Distillery District**, stop at **Biidaasige Park**, and finish with a well-earned meal at **Cherry Street Bar-B-Que**. Along the way, we'll see some of the city's oldest neighbourhoods, newer communities, historic architecture, green spaces, and some pretty great views. Along the way we'll: * Walk through Rosedale Valley 🌳 * Explore the historic streets of Cabbagetown * Pass through Regent Park * Wander through the Distillery District * Stop at Biidaasige Park * Take in the fall scenery and city views * Finish at **Cherry Street Bar-B-Que** 🍖 The walk includes a **long set of stairs**, so while this isn't a difficult hike, you should be comfortable walking for several hours and keeping up with the group. *** ## 🏙️ A Little Toronto History Along the Way This walk takes us through several very different parts of Toronto. In **Cabbagetown**, we'll pass beautifully preserved Victorian homes and streets that reflect the neighbourhood's long history, including its Irish roots. We'll then make our way through **Regent Park**, one of Toronto's most historically significant communities, where older social housing has been joined by new housing, arts, and community spaces. From there, we'll head into the **Distillery District**, with its cobblestone streets and historic red-brick buildings. We'll also stop at **Biidaasige Park**, whose name means *“the sun is shining”* in Anishinaabemowin. It's a lot of Toronto in one walk. *** ## 🍺 The Keating Channel Pub & Grill We'll finish our walk at **The Keating Channel Pub & Grill**, right on the Keating Channel. There's a bit of history behind this stop. The pub struggled during the massive Port Lands construction, when road closures and the relocation of the Cherry Street bridge made the area difficult to reach. With the Port Lands now transformed and **Biidaasige Park** open, people are rediscovering this part of the city — and the pub is getting a second chance. After exploring the new park and the transformed Port Lands, we'll finish at one of the neighbourhood's old survivors: a casual waterfront pub with a patio overlooking the Keating Channel. *** ## ☀️ Weather & Expectations This is a **long urban walk**, not a difficult hike, but you should be comfortable being on your feet for several hours. There is a long set of stairs along the route. Canada: Crisis

The Great Depression of the 1930s hit the Canadian economy especially hard, what with its dependence on unrefined exports. The Dust Bowl hit Saskatchewan farmers particularly hard. (High debt and low fish prices drove Newfoundland to bankruptcy, and its Dominion government was replaced by a Royal commission.) Conservative Prime Minister was a Hamlet figure much like his American counterpart Herbert Hoover: Hobo camps were nicknamed Hooverville in the USA, Bennettburg in Canada, and horse-drawn cars were "Hoover carriages" there, "Bennett buggies" here. Mackenzie King returned to power in 1935 with the slogan "King or Chaos, and his Liberals would govern Canada for over 50 of the next 63 years. But new forces were emerging. (The Liberal vote was actually down from 1930, but declined less than the Conservative vote.) Canadian socialists created the Co-Operative Commonwealth Federation in 1932, led by J.S. Woodsworth. The Social Credit movement elected "Bible Bill" Aberhart Alberta premier in 1935, and won 17 federal seats that year in the western provinces. The Union Nationale's Maurice Duplessis and Liberal Mitchell Hepburn harnessed populism and were elected premier of Quebec and Ontario respectively. And there were extremist movements: communist leader Tim Buck's speeches attracted huge audiences, Adrien Arcand's Blue Shirts promoted fascism, and the Canadian Deutscher Bund promoted Nazism among German-Canadians. When the United Kingdom entered World War I, the Dominions had followed automatically. But when London declared war on Germany in 1939, each Parliament had to vote on it. Canada approved almost unanimously. Over a million Canadians served in this war--almost a tenth of the population--with almost 42,000 dead. As in the previous war, the issue of conscription divided the nation: in a 1942 referendum the Anglophone majority approved while most Francophones dissented. (Only 13,000 reservists were ultimately sent overseas.) The Second World War transformed Canada again. Under Missions and Supply Minister C.D. Howe, Canada produced almost $10 billion worth of war materials. Like the U.S.A., Canada enjoyed huge economic growth without the infrastructure damage and civilian deaths in Europe and Asia. Over 800,000 women worked in the service and manufacturing sectors. Our discussion will touch on: The widespread anger over poverty. Political extremism and populism. Currents of anti-Semitism. Wartime mobilization. Key Canadian battles. Wartime mass internment of B.C. Japanese-Canadians. The conscription crisis. A weekly discussion on a history topic. We'll meet at Yorkville Village food court, at the round table near the west entrance.
