**Players and game designers wanted for this open house style event! NOTE: Due to Halloween, Skunkworks is out, and you should BRING YOUR SPOOKIEST GAME.** **FEE:** $8 to play at Geeky Teas - payable at the event to Geeky Teas at front desk. If this is your first time showing your game at FPLA, please introduce yourself to either Damon or Cassandra (one or both will be near the front of the room) before your session for a quick explainer on how to get your game to the table and what to expect from playtesting.* **SCHEDULE:** Game days have 3 segments. **You do not need to come for the whole day!** However, it is good etiquette if you are testing your own game to stay and test at least one other designer's game as well. 11:00am - 1:00 pm **OPEN PLAY TESTING** This is unstructured play time, ideal for short games (45min or less), 2 player games, and games that require a quieter environment. If you're a designer, grab an available table and let people know you are looking for players. If you're a player, just sit down at a game and play! **SESSION ONE** 1:15pm - 3:15pm **SESSION TWO** 3:30pm - 5:30pm Scheduled sessions are the core of First Play! This event we have three scheduled sessions, with about 4-6 games running during each time slot. Following moderator announcements, each designer running a game will have the opportunity to do an 'elevator pitch' to players. After which, players decide which game they want to play. Two hour sessions are ideal for games that are 60-90 minutes, and have been playtested multiple times before. After play, be sure to leave time to give and receive feedback. 12th Annual Creepy Halloween Gaming and Costume Contest!

East Valley Board Games is super excited about our 12th *annual Halloween event! (*Our numbers are off bc we had to skip a year because of Covid, blah blah blah.) We will have board games, candy, and a costume contest! We'll have a prize for our 1st place favorite costume. If this all sounds creepily cool in the ghastliest of ways, get your bony behinds down to Paper Hero's for some Halloween gaming. Andrew and the PH crew are once again graciously opening their doors to us for gaming! Costume Contest---Our Halloween gaming event is from 2pm to 6pm and as we always say, drop in whenever. However, if you plan to participate in the costume contest, you will need to be in our room at 4pm for voting. We will be announcing the top 3 vote-getters around 4:15. Anyone who attends the Halloween gaming event can vote on the winners. You don't have to come in costume, but we STRONGLY encourage it, because um, FUN. We've had some really fun costumes, like The Word Thief, Marty McFly, a Ceiling Fan, Gru from Despicable Me, Steampunk Wonder Woman, a Butterfly, Indiana Jones, Columbo, a homemade Scrabble board complete with moveable pieces, and so on. Store policy---Paper Hero's is asking that every person who attends our events makes at least 1 purchase or purchases $5 store credit to use in the future (the store keeps an account for you). Snacks and drinks can be part of this, but they're not ideal. It's a gaming store (also comic books!) after all! What we like to do is put aside a list of games we want and buy or order them from PH, rather than get them from Amazon (doesn't Jeff Bozo have enough of our money?) The store runners and East Valley Board Games organizers will remind you at the event. Food---Outside food and drink is allowed in. We just ask as always that you are careful so as not to spill. There's a coffee shop next door, Nat's Early Bite, which is open until 3pm. Just please be careful and don’t spill food or drink on games, or you’ll be expected to replace them, which we think is fair. Games---Feel free to bring your own games, or just play the ones that others bring. There's always a healthy selection of strategy games, word games, party games, and so on. Attendance---This is a drop-in event, so you don’t have to stay the whole time. Come for an hour, come for two hours, show up late, leave early. (Just see above note about the costume contest if it interests you.) As long as you clean up any mess that you leave, you're good with us and the store owners! Guests---We will encourage guests for this event, because it's Halloween! Please understand that you are responsible for making sure that your guests spend at least $5 at Paper Heroes. Parking---Paper Heroes is located in a strip mall on the northwest corner of Burbank Blvd. and Hazeltine Ave. in Sherman Oaks/Valley Village. No, we don't know why Meetup lists the city as Los Angeles. There are a few parking spaces in the small shopping center, and we would suggest looking for street parking as well. Since it's Sunday, meters will be free. Important note: It's been brought to our attention that there are a few 1 hour parking signs around the venue, so as always, check parking signs carefully so you don't get a visit from a parking fairy. Presenting Our October Chess Double Feature LA Chess Social X Highland Park Chess Club Two of LA's beloved social chess clubs are teaming up for a huge collaboration! In a few weeks, we are coming together for a lovely evening of **casual/competitive chess, live music, costume contest** and more! This event will be held at two venues simultaneously, which are directly across the street from each other. Each space will have a different atmosphere, one will be more lively, the other more relaxed and quiet. **Venue #1: "The Lounge"** We are excited to be working with the fabulous bar "The Goldfish", for the first time! This space will have live music, lively games of casual and competitive chess, as well as award winning Thai food and drinks. This establishment also has rooms with billiards tables and an arcade if one desires a break between games. **Venue#2: "The Study"** As many of you know, the Highland Park Chess Club meets every Wednesday at Belle's, which boasts a breathtaking back patio, with a candle-lit, under-the-foliage wine bar aesthetic. In this space, due to the popularity of higher-level chess theory lectures, we will be welcoming back International Master Levon Altounian! He will be conducting a lecture between 8:30pm and 9:30 (perhaps longer). There will also be room for casual games in this quieter location. Unlike the Goldfish, with is 21+, this space is open to all ages! We have tables reserved from 2-5pm; staff can help you find us. In the past we've had people teaching Wingspan, Mysterium, We're Doomed, Monikers, Catan, Gloom, Everdell, Ticket to Ride, 7 Wonders, and Parks.
