Leeds Castle, orchards and ghosts of Dr Who: the Kentish Greensand

Leeds Castle, orchards and ghosts of Dr Who: the Kentish Greensand

Sat, Sep 12, 7:30 AM
From The London Walking and Pub-finding Group
4.9

Well folks, after a scorching summer we're entering the season (we hope) of mists and mellow fruitfulness, and as we approach the autumnal equinox the London Walking and Pub-finding Group takes up arms once again for this fantastic wander through the orchards - and increasingly vineyards - of the eastern end of the Kentish Greensand ridge. The walk will wend around **13 miles (21km)** from the village of Hollingbourne nestling in the folds of the North Downs/M20/HS1. Things rapidly take on a more bucolic turn, and an early highlight is passing Leeds Castle (pictured), once described as 'the loveliest castle in the world' - perhaps a little over-enthusiastically, but it is still pretty lovely. After lunch in one of Kent's finest pubs we continue along the Greensand Way with some fine views to the south, past the tomb of a Timelord who isn't dead yet and ending (kind of on a theme) in the village of Pluckley - notoriously England's most haunted village, stalked by at least 12 members of the undead community. All in all, a fantastic walk of the superlatives - the finest company and pubs also guaranteed! Hopefully see you there - as ever, we will get group train tickets for those who don't have them when we are all gathered at Victoria on the day.
