**Welcome to the first meeting of our cozy book club!** 📚☕ The idea is simple: we’ll pick a book together, read it at our own pace until the next meeting, and discuss it when we meet again. I created this club so we can discover new authors and genres together, connect with like-minded people, and enjoy a good cup of coffee, tea, or whatever drink you prefer. Feel free to bring book suggestions — these can be specific titles, authors, or even themes such as *modern Japanese literature*. As a small book club, we’re open to variety. If you don’t have a clear idea yet, don’t worry — I’ll come prepared with a list of suggestions. **Note:** These meetings are free and will always be. **About me**: I'm former Reuters journalist and creative storyteller. When I’m not reading or writing, I’m probably hiking somewhere. I moved to Barcelona from Gdańsk two years ago and would love to connect with fellow book lovers here.

Cli-Fi Book Club: TBD

The climate emergency requires more than facts alone. The transformation we need must be measured in greenhouse gas emissions averted and solar panels installed, but it is also an emotional transition, a shift in the narratives we tell, a reconnection with old wisdom and so much more. In short, it is perfectly suited for fiction. If you are seeking such guidance, and if you want to be part of a community, we would love to have you join the Cli-Fi Club this month. Our selection for this month will be announced soon. This event is free, but please get your copy from the wonderful English bookstore that hosts our book club meetings, Backstory. To cover Meetup fees and other costs, we also encourage a €1 donation per attendee. **About the Cli-Fi Club** We read climate fiction — ie, cli-fi — of all types. Our focus is on works that grapple seriously and thoughtful with the emotions and meaning of this moment, what may lie ahead and what may already be lost. Our selections go well beyond the stereotypical conception of cli-fi — ie, science fiction and post-apocalyptic narratives — to include a range of works that engage creatively with humanity’s great challenge, and may even leave you inspired. **About this community** Are you new to the meetup group Let’s Talk About Climate Change or our WhatsApp group Mobilizing Hope? We work to bring together English-speaking people in Barcelona and beyond for climate education and action, and also community. We welcome speakers of Catalan, Castellano and other languages, but most of our events are in English because most of our organizers and attendees are more comfortable in English than other languages. We created this group because we could not find any community like it. We range from degrowthers to startup founders, from artists to data scientists. We may not agree on everything, but we all want to move in the same direction. If you do too, you’re welcome to make it your home.

Coffee Connections

A casual (but coordinated) coffee break to meet new friends, take a Zoom break, and get your AM caffeine fix. Stop by for a few minutes or stay the whole time. Bring a friend or wander in solo. Come for the coffee and company, or just bring a book to read while surrounded by other in-real-life, community-seeking humans. Come by every Friday, or just when you happen to be in town. Make it whatever you need it to be that week. It's not an \*event\* per se, but we hope these Friday meet-ups can become a fixture of the bookshop! Gathering spot will be in the downstairs area of the bookshop (near the Community Library). Coffee and tea are 1.50€ and can be purchased at the cash register upstairs. 💜Club Tránsito💜 Con este ciclo de dos sesiones queremos acercarnos más al hermoso catálogo de nuestra editorial amiga @transitoeditorial. Lo haremos con dos autoras mexicanas recién salidas del horno: @lilicuados y @noraaamh. 💐 Liliana Muñoz acompaña a su tía abuela Yoli —nonagenaria, alegre, lúcida— durante los días en que la enfermedad hace visibles los límites de la vida. Lo que empieza como un intento por fijar recuerdos se convierte en una meditación sobre el paso del tiempo y la fragilidad del cuerpo. Con una prosa contenida, la autora reconstruye escenas de infancia, charlas de sobremesa, chismes jugosos y anécdotas disparatadas que revelan una entrañable constelación familiar: el buen humor de Yoli, el singular carácter de sus hermanas, la entrega silenciosa de su hija Ceci, la devoción de sus sobrinos. La autora va tejiendo una reflexión sobre los cuidados, el tiempo y la memoria entre Mérida y Barcelona, entre lecturas compartidas y visitas al médico. 'Los umbrales' es el retrato íntimo, tierno y sereno de una vida en apariencia común, que, al ser contada, revela su extraordinaria profundidad. **A bilingual poetry reading and translation talk with Arianna Afsari** Join us for an evening of poetry to celebrate the bilingual publication of Juan Gelman's Notes / Notas translated by Arianna Afsari and Silvia R. Tandeciarz. Notes / Notas (published by the87press) captures the sorrow and violence of Argentina's 1976 military dictatorship; translated for the first time into English, this collection is renowned for its linguistic innovation. Translator Arianna Afsari will read from the collection and participate in a discussion about Gelman's poetics and the experience of translating these prescient poems. **[ORDER THE BOOK HERE](https://backstorybookshop.shop/product/notes-notas/)** **About the speaker:** **Arianna Afsari** is a translator and doctoral candidate in the Department of Comparative Literature at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor). She examines Argentine militant poetry of the 1960s and 70s alongside traditions of Persian militant poetics deployed as tools of anticolonial resistance. Afsari works across three languages: Persian, Spanish, and Russian. As a translator, she has published English translations of selected poems and a preface from Juan Gelman’s book, Dibaxu, in the literary translation journal, Absinthe: World Literature in Translation (December 2023).

Strangerland by Monika Radojevic

**Join us in May for a book club discussion of Strangerland by Monika Radojevic, followed by coffee or drinks nearby.** This month, we’ll be reading Strangerland, the debut novel by Brazilian-Montenegrin writer and poet Monika Radojevic, **ahead of her upcoming visit to Backstory Bookshop on June 9th.** Set between London, Yugoslavia, and Brazil, the novel follows Zivoin, newly arrived in England as he watches his homeland begin to fracture, and Alegria, a bright and ambitious young woman preparing to leave Uberlândia behind in search of a different future. When their paths cross, they find in each other a brief but profound sense of home. Come discuss this moving new novel with us! The discussion will be held in English, but you’re welcome to read the book in any language. We’ll meet at Backstory Bookshop downstairs.
