Guided rock climbing near Idyllwild

I'm going to hire a guide to do a Tahquitz climb (near Idyllwild & Mt San Jacinto). This is multipitch trad and 5.4-ish. The date is open but it looks like the weather will be OK in mid-Oct. To be clear, this is a roped climb, like that shown in the photo. And, it's **multipitch trad**, which is a different beast than toprope climbs. While you don't really need experience, it'd really help since both likely routes have exposure in parts. As in, if you look down there's nothing below you for a few hundred feet. You probably won't have to clean or belay, but it'd be a good idea to practice a figure 8. It'd be an even better idea to go to a climbing gym, buy a day pass, and tell them what you hope to do. The routes I'm looking at are The Trough and White Maiden's Walkway. The exposure on the latter is apparently greater. I'll leave it up to the guide to choose which is most appropriate for the group. The guiding service will probably be Vertical Adventures and the cost for just me is $495. If I can find one other person it's $295 each and two others makes it $245 each. Guess which option I prefer. Whichever service we go with it will be with an AMGA-certified guide; they'll be the ones placing the protection, not me. I'll probably clean and belay the guide. You'll probably be belayed by the guide. You'll need a helmet, a harness, and probably climbing shoes. The service can rent all of those to you. If you don't already know what **multipitch trad** is (yes, I said it again), please watch a video of what that means. Like I said, it's a good bit more involved than toprope. Anyone who signs up has to join the waitlist and to get off it you have to leave a comment (or send me a DM) detailing your climbing experience or, if you have none of that, why you think you won't freak out with exposure. Note also that I'm slowly getting over a lower back nerve issue caused by bulging disks. It might cause pain for this event but I should be able to do it unless that suddenly gets worse. There's apparently a steep approach hike so prep for that. However, going to JTree instead is an option either if the weather turns bad or my disks explode.

If you have not heard of either Valley Of Fire or Red Rock Conservation Area. . . that's because they are outside of California. We have so much here that we often can overlook what is right next-door and still super close. The other reason you may not of heard of them . . . Valley of Fire is a Nevada State Park and not a National Park. State Parks are assumed to not be as good as National Parks. And that's not true!!! Red Rock is a National Conservation Area . . . again . . . assumed to not be as good since not designated as National Park . . . yet. The reality is BOTH are stunning. And the designations make them more accessible. * Valley Of Fire has "The Fire Wave." Similar "The Wave" in UT. It also has * Pastel Slot Canyon * The Dome-lands (another slot there too) * Rainbow Vista Trail * Fire Canyon Overlook * Petroglyph Canyon (yes!!! Petroglyphs!!) * Atlatl Rock * Arch Rock * Pinnacles Trail (for the adventurous). And we are likely to see some or all of these: * Bighorn sheep * Jackrabbits * Coyotes * Kit Foxes * Lizards * Iguanas * Tortoises ***About this event:*** This event is tent camping (not RV or Van). You do need to provide your own gear and food. (more on that down below). We are staying outside of Red Rock on a private non-federal, non-blm site. The general itinerary/ schedule is: Fri- Arrive when you can. Anytime AFTER 2PM. People will be arriving up to midnight. I will be away to greet you and show you where to go. Along with whoever else is at the campfire at that time. Sat- Valley Of Fire - - This is the main fun. * Drive Mouse’s Tank Road towards Fire Wave and take lots of photos along the way. * Now to our main hike. We will get there early before the crowds. We will do a loop of four hikes together. Fire Wave, Pink Pastel Slot Cyn, Domes Slot, White Domes. They call it the 7 wonders loop. I do not know what the other three wonders are. * After that we make it to Fire Cyn Vista (this is a view only) * Then two short hikes of Rainbow Vista trail (this has natural arches) * & Mouse's Tank trial. This has 2000 year old petroglyphs all along the canyon walls. * A quick zip to Atlatl Rock (more petroglyphs). * Pinnacles Trail is an option for those that want more dirt on their shoes. * And lastly visit the Beehives and take tons more pix there. * Elephant Rock is also an option to drive to. * Get back to camp and we have a fab campfire all nite. Sunday Schedule will be Red Rock Cyn. * Easy vista points and viewpoint stops. * Medium (two or three smaller hikes) * Hard hike (for the hardcore among us. * We will break to groups accordingly by who wants to do what. * Get back to camp and we have a fab campfire all nite. Monday: Head home. * For those only staying Sat & Sun eve. Simply pack up Sun AM and do Red Rock with us and then continue home. **Time of year:** BOTH Valley of Fire and Red Rock Nat Rec Area are MISERABLE in summer. For this time of year . . . Daytime high will get up to 70 degrees. Perfect for hikes. Nighttime low will get to around 45 degrees. Just bring some extra blankets and you will fine. For those of you who have not, enrollment in WTC is something you should consider now. The Wilderness Travel Course helps build outdoor skills so hikers can be safe in the backcountry. The course runs for ten weeks and includes four field trips (two one day and two weekend outings). Students learn map and compass navigation skills for competent hiking off-trail, snow travel, rock scrambling techniques, first aid, nutrition and lots more. The course is followed by unforgettable experience backpacking trips, most of which take place in the High Sierra, Sequoia and Yosemite during the summer months. WTC moves you from being a day hiker to a more serious adventurer. You will acquire skills in trip planning, preparation, equipment and wilderness safety to take you into the backcountry in all seasons, beyond roads and trails with new friends that share your interest in the outdoors. Cantonese Families Meetup #6

Hi all! Come hang out in the park again. We'll be doing circle time again, earlier this time. Trying out a morning meetup on the westside! (subject to change if I get enough protest about this). Cantonese circle time will be 15-20 minutes, with some short songs, story time, and perhaps a short activity. These will all be designed to be engaging for a variety of ages (mainly thinking \~1-6yo). Be prepared to circle up with your kids and help facilitate hopefully a fun and enriching short program! The rest of the time will be free time for play, chat, and community building. Cantonese is always encouraged, but there's no pressure. The event takes place right at their rescue station in Sierra Madre. **Rescue Station Tours:** Go inside the headquarters to explore the nerve center where the team coordinates wilderness searches and emergency operations. **Gear & Technology Displays:** Get a close-up look at specialized technical rock, snow, and ice rescue gear. Members will showcase their mission-critical tracking software, satellite messengers, and drone/UAS equipment. **Preventative SAR & Hiking Safety:** Team members will host public outreach sessions covering wilderness survival basics, heat exhaustion awareness, and steps to take if you get lost in the San Gabriel Mountains. **Kid-Friendly Activities:** The event is designed for all ages, offering interactive safety activities, fun learning experiences for children, and photo opportunities.
