Queer Book Club - Kin by Tayari Jones

Queer Book Club - Kin by Tayari Jones

Tue, Sep 22, 11:00 PM
From Queer Book Club
4.9

Hey Everyone! **Welcome to Queer Book Club! We read books about, for and written by queer people! Follow us on Instagram @queer_book_club Our next meetup will be held on Tuesday September 22nd at Young Ethel’s in Park Slope BK This month we will be reading Kin by Tayari Jones ** Vernice and Annie, two motherless daughters raised in Honeysuckle, Louisiana, have been best friends and neighbors since earliest childhood, but are fated to live starkly different lives. Raised by a fierce aunt determined to give her a stable home in the wake of her mother’s death, Vernice leaves Atlanta at eighteen for Spelman College, where she joins a sisterhood of powerfully connected Black women and marries into an affluent family. Annie, abandoned by her dissolute mother as a child, and fixated on the idea of finding her and filling the bottomless hole left by her absence, sets off on a journey that will take her into a world of peril and adversity, as well as love and adventure, and culminate in a battle for her life. A novel about mothers and daughters, about friendship and sisterhood, and the complexities of being a woman in the American South, Kin is an exuberant, emotionally rich, unforgettable work from one of the brightest and most irresistible voices in contemporary fiction. **At the end of the discussion we can vote on which book we read for next month so bring a queer suggestion. Make sure to support our amazing host bar, by buying drinks! They are so great to support us so we must do our part in return! We are a lovely accepting group of queers and allies, and all are welcome! Our book list is officially too long for meetup and will now live on this google doc!

For our group, this visit offers a fascinating blend of: • History • Science • Adventure • Architecture • Rare collections • Storytelling • Old New York private club atmosphere This is exactly the kind of special-access experience that makes our Social Club unique. *** ## 💵 **COST** **$25 per person** This includes the guided private group tour. Payment will be made through the Meetup event page via PayPal or the Meetup app to reserve your spot. *** ## 🕚 **SCHEDULE** **10:45 AM** — Please arrive and meet outside / near the entrance **11:00 AM** — Private group tour begins **Approx. 12:00 PM** — Tour concludes Please arrive on time, as this is a private scheduled visit. *** ## 📍 **LOCATION** **The Explorers Club** 46 East 70th Street New York, NY 10021 Located on the Upper East Side, between Madison Avenue and Park Avenue. *** ## ⚠️ **IMPORTANT NOTES** This is a private group visit, and space will be limited. Please RSVP “YES” only if you fully intend to attend. Because this is a specially arranged private tour, late cancellations or no-shows may affect membership status under our Social Club’s Rules & Regulations. *** ## 🌟 **FINAL NOTE** This is one of those rare New York experiences that most people never get to do. A private visit inside **The Explorers Club** offers a glimpse into a world of legendary expeditions, scientific discovery, historic collections, and the enduring human spirit of exploration. Join us for a truly memorable morning at one of New York City’s most fascinating hidden institutions.

BROOKLYN Smutty Book Club - Tourist Season by Brynne Weaver

BROOKLYN Smutty Book Club - Tourist Season by Brynne Weaver

Wed, Sep 16, 11:00 PM
From Brooklyn Smutty Book Club
4.8

The book for September is recommended by Shana - **[Tourist Season (The Seasons of Carnage Trilogy Book 1)](https://www.romance.io/books/680a03ee37fa524cfd66bbbd/tourist-season-brynne-weaver)** **[by Brynne Weaver](https://www.romance.io/books/680a03ee37fa524cfd66bbbd/tourist-season-brynne-weaver).** She says it's like Butcher and Blackbird, if the main female was also the caretaker and mentee to a retired Dexter in a Hallmark town. Quick housekeeping note: Scammers have been using the name of Smutty Book Club and its organizers to invite people to for-profit events. **If you receive any solicitation for an event or receive communication outside of Meetup asking for money, then it is a scam.** Please let us know if you see anything suspicious. Fun housekeeping note: Our annual trip to the **Renaissance Festival** will be on **Saturday, September 26th**. See Meetup for details. Remember we leave early - we want to be on the first bus.... breakfast beers are waiting. **Ok back to [Tourist Season](https://www.romance.io/books/680a03ee37fa524cfd66bbbd/tourist-season-brynne-weaver). Here's what the publisher says:** *. Cape Carnage is a seaside town of colorful houses, quirky shops, and an unusually high body count. With tourists comes trouble, and Harper Starling won’t let anyone ruin her picture-perfect home. A skilled gardener with killer instincts, Harper protects her sanctuary—and her aging mentor with a fading memory—at any cost. Troublesome tourists don’t check out of Carnage. They compost beneath Harper’s award-winning flowerbeds.* *. But Nolan Rhodes isn’t your average tourist. Devilishly handsome, disarmingly charming, and skilled with a blade, Nolan is relentless in the pursuit of revenge. On every anniversary of the hit-and-run accident that fractured his life, Nolan slays another target. And he’s saved the best for last: the undeniably beautiful Harper Starling. The problem? Harper isn’t the monster he expected. And she won’t go down without a fight.* *, When an amateur true crime investigator comes to Cape Carnage on the trail of a long-lost serial killer, Harper and Nolan strike an uneasy truce. If Nolan helps Harper protect her town, she’ll keep quiet about his hunting habits . . . for now. But their alliance soon spirals into obsession, one that threatens to shatter every secret in Carnage—including their fragile love.* *. Tourist Season is a darkly funny, slow burn, enemies-to-lovers romance where destruction and desire are balanced on the edge of a blade—and where love is the most dangerous battleground of all.* Please note: Paddy's of Park Slope serves plenty of drinks, but does not serve food. They welcome people to bring in food, or order in. And each month is chosen at the previous book club. So please come with your suggestions!
