Meritocracy & Independence – What Happened to the West?
Thu, Aug 20, 11:00 PMJoin Liberty Labs Toronto for our thirteenth meetup on **Thursday, August 20, 2026, at 7:00 PM** near Yonge and Eglinton! This month we’re examining one of the biggest cultural shifts of our time: how the West has moved away from a culture of meritocracy and personal independence toward something very different. We’ll discuss: * The classical liberal roots of Western success, individual responsibility, equality of opportunity, and the belief that outcomes should largely follow effort and ability * How those norms have changed (equity over equality, safetyism, institutional capture, declining trust in competence) * The consequences for innovation, social mobility, free speech, and personal agency * Whether these shifts are reversible, and what individuals can do to preserve or rebuild independence in their own lives * Open floor for examples, counter-arguments, and real-world observations from Canada and beyond This is a free-flowing, evidence-based conversation. No orthodoxy required, just honest discussion from a liberty-minded perspective. What to expect: * Open discussion and idea-sharing * Complimentary appetizers * Everyone who attends will receive a million-dollar Zimbabwe note as a fun take-home reminder of real value vs. fiat illusions * Connect with 10-20 liberty-minded Torontonians Venue: Pickle Barrel (2300 Yonge St, at Yonge & Eglinton), right above Eglinton Station. Easy parking in the Yonge Eglinton Centre garage or nearby Green P lots. RSVP to save your spot. Let’s talk about what the West once valued — and what it will take to keep those values alive. See you there!

Free Admission: International Ceramic Art Fair + Food/Drinks (Gardiner Museum)
Wed, Aug 12, 10:00 PMOn **Wednesday August 12th,** **explore the International Ceramic Art Fair** (ICAF) before it leaves the Gardiner Museum on August 16th! The ICAF is the Gardiner Museum’s biennial celebration of innovation and contemporary directions in ceramics, inviting visitors to discover how the boundaries of craftsmanship are being redefined in clay. ICAF 2026 has been expanded from a 10-day event to a 12-week exhibition and public program exploring how ceramics is evolving across art, design, and emerging technologies. At the heart of this year’s edition is the theme “the city and the commons,” presenting ceramics as both material and method for examining how we live together in rapidly changing cities. From architecture to infrastructure, ceramics shelter, connect, and ground us, offering new ways to think about belonging, resilience, and shared space. It's a must-visit for anyone who loves contemporary art. **Additional Exhibits** * In Search of Imperfection: The Macdonald Collection of Japanese and Japanese-Inspired Ceramics * Highways of Harlan House **COST** Free Admission Meetup fee: $5 *** **SIGNING-UP** * **Simply RSVP Yes confirming if you will join for food/drinks after** * RSVPs close 1 day prior, and cancellations after will result in a No Show and impact future attendance. * You can also just show up and join us at the event meetup spot and time * A reminder will go out the day before with my cell and details when to meet, etc. ‐‐----‐----‐‐-------------‐----------- **MEETUP TIME** **Meet me at 6pm** **inside the entrance of The Gardiner Museum at 111 Queen's Park.** We will then head over to the ICAF exhibit at the Special Exhibition Hall on the 3rd Floor.
