Sunday Scramble: Red Rock Grand Staircase
Red Spring Picnic Area, Calico Basin Rd, Las Vegas, NV 89161, Las Vegas, NV, USJoin us on this strenuous but REWARDING scenic scramble at Red Springs. This route is almost entirely class 2 and 3 scrambling as we scramble our way to the TOP of Calico 1 for STUNNING views of the Red Rock Valley and Vegas (for those that joined on the Guardian Angel Hike - This is the mountain we circled around).
Grand Staircase Loop is just 1.1 miles but with 695 of elevation gain. This route begins at the Calico Basin Parking Lot and travels along a class 3 off-trail scramble route through a beautiful boulder field of red rocks. The beautiful geologic formations make for an exciting hike as you make your way up to the summit. Once at the top, enjoy views of the beautiful sandstone rocks.
WHAT TO EXPECT
A challenging but highly rewarding 1.1 mile scramble to the TOP of Calico 1. Most of this trail require class 2 and 3 scrambling - this means you will need to use your hands to pull yourself up and lower yourself down.
However, we will take a relaxed pace with frequent breaks to rest or take photos :)
WHERE TO MEET
Directly at the Red Spring Picnic area in Calico Basin. This is outside of the Red Rock Scenic loop, so no passes or reservations are required. The parking lot is paved and spacious, so no carpooling is necessary.
WHAT TO BRING
• Dress appropriately for the weather (it may start cold but you will warm up quickly)
• 2–3 liters of water
• Light snacks
• Proper hiking shoes - good rubber for scrambling on rock
If you have any questions at all, feel free to reach out.
Let’s go make some memories! 🏜️🔥
