About us
If you have social anxiety or shyness, but you love literature and would like to join a small, no-pressure MeetUp, THIS GROUP IS FOR YOU!
We will meet once a fortnight (or whenever you feel like you can make it) and just sit as a group, or perhaps in pairs or threes (whatever feels comfortable at the time), and have a casual chat about how weβre feeling and what we think about the literature.
Occasionally weβll be looking at poetry, from time-to-time short stories, but more-often-than-not weβll be reading a slightly longer novella (or short novel).
Please donβt worry, nobody will EVER be expected to read anything aloud or to say anything at all if they donβt feel like it.
The setting itself will always be very casual and the group will be held in a quiet, cosy room at the back of a larger community centre in the evenings, when nobody else is around.
Youβre more than welcome to come and just listen to me or other people speaking, if you feel more comfortable that way. Whatever stage youβre at with reading or with anxiety or shyness, I assure you this is a safe and non-threatening environment.
Whenever youβre ready, it would be great to have you here!

About the Event
Hi there β¨
Whoever you are, you're warmly invited to join me for a full-day writing workshop βοΈ with:
- brunch π³,
- tea/coffee β,
- a free Penguin mini modern classic book
- a late afternoon drink (beer, wine, or soft - you decide)
- and plenty of space to remember, invent, and get some ideas down on the page π±
Together, we'll be writing childhood. Not memoir exactly, not nostalgia exactly β something closer to the strange, half-lit territory where memory and imagination blur, and the child's-eye view sees more than the adult one gives it credit for.
We'll read short extracts from poets, novelists, and short story writers who've worked in this territory β including Katherine Mansfield, Ian McEwan, Jamaica Kincaid, Sharon Olds, William Blake, and Vasko Popa β then use them as springboards for our own guided writing exercises, in poetry or prose fiction, whichever calls to you.
What do we mean by childhood? π€
We're interested in writing that asks questions like:
- What does the child understand that the adult around them doesn't?
- Where does memory end and invention begin?
- What's lost when we grow up β and what, if anything, is gained?
- And what can we unlock in our own writing when we let ourselves see the world at that height again?
No strict rules. No right answers. Just curiosity, play, and honest language. π§Έ
