Urban Hiking: Redmond in Autumn
7541 Leary Way NE Parking, Bear Creek Pkwy, Redmond, WA 98052, USA, Redmond, WA, USWant to see some beautiful fall trees and meet people? Urban Hiking is an opportunity to get outside and chat while hiking easy trails around the metro area!
(Reposted this event to correct the date -- the meetup is on Saturday.)
This week's hike features downtown Redmond, where there's lots paved and relatively flat trails, many of which are grade-separated from traffic. Please let me know if you have other ideas for places we could hike.
We're starting and finishing at the 7541 Leary Way NE Parking, near the train station. There's a trail on the east side of the parking lot where we'll meet up.
Tap here to see a map of major trails around downtown Redmond. We're doing the RTC - Bear Creek loop this week, a 2-mile route that offers a nice mix of nature and city environments, and will take about 45 minutes. The downtown park is surrounded by restaurants if people want to grab something to eat after the hike.
Route this week:
- Start at the Central Connector Park at 7541 Leary Way NE, near the Half-Price Books.
- Southeast through Redmond Town Center (an outdoor mall).
- South to Bear Creek Trail.
- Pass by BJ's Restaurant & Brewhouse. If you're late, you can meet up with us here, before we get to the nature trails.
- West along Bear Creek trail until it joins with the Sammamish River Trail.
- North to the Central Connector trail.
- East to end at Central Connector Park.
- (Optional) Get something to eat at the Downtown Redmond Park, just north of the Central Connector.

SF&F Reading & Hangout
Lincoln South Food Hall, 500 Bellevue Way NE Ste 250, Bellevue, wa, USWant to hang out and chat about science fiction & fantasy (SF&F), and read some short stories? Anyone is welcome, whether you're a complete newcomer to the genre, or an oldschool fan of Asimov and Le Guin.
This week we're discussing a Ken Liu short story called "The Gods Will Not be Chained." It takes about 15-20 minutes to read. It was published to a variety of places, including here: https://bigthink.com/high-culture/ken-liu-short-story
If you don't have time to read it before the meetup, no worries; I'll bring my copy. You don't need to bring anything of your own. After discussing the story, we'll just hang out talking about SF&F narratives we like (in any form of media).
Location
Lincoln Square South Tower food court's lounge area (in the back, south end, where social-deduction events often meet). Parking is free on weekends.
Long-Term
Next week we're reading the short story "Paper Menagerie" by Ken Liu, for the Sept 27 meetup.
We decide on stories to read during the meetups and on the discord server: https://discord.gg/3dQN2jceh6
This event's discussion thread is in the "events-forum" under "SF&F Read & Hangout".We read short stories by variety of authors, from the satirical (like Terry Pratchett) to heavier writers (Ted Chiang, N.K. Jemisin, Le Guin). The goal is a small, casual group to meet people, with stories as a conversation starter. We might get into longer novels later, but for now, reading short stories during meetups lets people dive in and join the discussion without having to catch up.
(And yes, the picture is a world carried on the back of elephants riding a turtle through space. Terry Pratchett was fun like that.)

Blood on the Clocktower [Social Deduction Game]
Lincoln South Food Hall, 500 Bellevue Way NE Ste 250, Bellevue, wa, USJoin us for Blood on the Clocktower! This is a popular social deduction game full of logic and deception. Players will randomly be given a good or evil role, each with a unique ability. This game is similar to Werewolf or Mafia, except it's even more expansive!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Things to know about this event- Please try to show up by 6, especially if you have never played before! The game can accommodate people who arrive late and have to join mid-game, but it is not ideal for first-time players. Late first-time players might need to spectate the first game.
- This game involves deception, communication, logic, and piecing together information, some of which may be false. You will either be trying to deceive the other players, or figure out which players are trying to deceive you.
- The game length is variable depending on a variety of factors, but a typical game lasts somewhere between 1 to 2 hours. Typically each group plays 2 or 3 games per night.
- Parking in the garage underneath the Lincoln Square South Tower is free as long as you leave after 8:00.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We will have 4 simultaneous groups running games. The plan is as follows (potentially subject to change):- Beginner Group: Aimed at new players or people who want to play a simpler script. The script will be Trouble Brewing or another beginner-friendly script.
- Intermediate Group: Aimed at people who want to play a moderately complex script. The script will be Bad Moon Rising, Sects & Violets, or a simpler custom script.
- Advanced Groups: Aimed at people who want to play a more complex script. The scripts will include experimental characters, potentially Fabled and/or Loric, and might be completely homebrew. There will be 2 advanced groups.
These are not hard guidelines. The storyteller will run a game that is appropriate for the players. You are welcome to join whichever group you'd like!
If there are not enough attendees for 4 groups, we will have 3 groups, combining the Intermediate group and one of the Advanced groups.
