Michel Foucault & the Mechanisms of Control (Part II)
Panera Bread, 779 S Federal Hwy, Deerfield Beach, FL, USThanks to everyone who came for Foucault. It was a great discussion on the first two parts of his Discipline & Punish wherein we discussed Torture and Punishment, and his schema of the three technologies of power. Ultimately, it was the reformatory model that served as the basis for penal reform. But how did this happen so rapidly? What mechanism and technology was such that power shifted to control over the Homo Criminalis?
Let's read through parts III and IV of Foucault's Discipline & Punish (on sale for $10 on Amazon currently) entitled: Discipline and Prison, to see how Foucault works out the completion of his genealogy. Thence, we will discuss the implications of his work in our contemporary society.
Additionally, if you want extra reading, I will be reading through Foucault's response to "What is Enlightenment" where he interacts with Mendelssohn and Kant, in an attempt to define modern philosophy. This is not required, but is additional optional reading.
We will continue our meetup at Panera. Please save the tables if you get there early.
