What we’re about
** WE BELIEVE IN THE COMMUNITY-BUILDING POWER OF BOARDGAMES **
Ever walk into a boardgaming event and feel intimidated or overwhelmed? That's why we created this group.
Social Boardgaming hosts meetup events with an emphasis on the social benefits and pleasures of boardgaming. We work hard to make sure that every member has a great time — a welcoming and positive experience that'll bring you back for more. Most importantly, we take particular care to ensure that novice members receive a structured and gentle introduction to the hobby.
== Why boardgames? ==
Boardgames *literally* provide rules of engagement in a social setting. Because of this property, they enable everyone to interact on an equal footing — regardless of age, social standing, gender, sexual orientation, political and religious leanings, and almost anything else you care to name. And while we interact through a boardgame, we begin to bridge the gaps that separate us. We see what we have in common, more than how we differ, and we unavoidably weave the connections that build a community. *That* is the real power of boardgames.
== In days of old... ==
When you think of boardgames, do Monopoly, Risk, Clue, and Sorry spring to mind? Do you see boardgames as "boring" or "for kids"? In the past, you were probably right! But over the last 30 years, boardgames have evolved dramatically. Have a look at this video explaining the changes!

See all- Dinner and a Boardgame - DowntownHudsons Canada's Pub, Calgary, ABCA$4.99
Hi there,
You're invited to come and play boardgames with other friendly, fun, and super-cool Social Boardgaming members at Hudsons Canada's Pub, downtown. We've got a separate room all to ourselves.
[NB: Attendance requires a non-refundable, non-transferable, pre-paid fee of C$4.99. Details below. NO PAYMENTS AT THE DOOR.]== WHAT TO EXPECT ==
At this event the volunteer hosts curate the games, teach them, and help facilitate throughout. We select games designed for simplicity that support engaging player interaction, taking between about 20 and 60 minutes to play. As the evening progresses, everyone will have the opportunity to meet new people and learn/play the games that interest them. Absolutely no experience required; just a friendly disposition and a willingness to learn. New members and novice players are always welcomed and encouraged!== DETAILS ==
* Official start is 6:15pm (because street parking is free after 6:00pm), beginning with some chit-chat while we order and eat.
* Featured games begin at 7:00pm, when we'll organize into groups and begin the teach. If you arrive later, you will probably have to wait to get into a game, so try and avoid that. AIM TO ARRIVE BY 6:45pm.* Venues support us by setting aside space for our exclusive use and sometimes hiring additional staff. This is with an understanding that we will support them in return. Please plan to purchase a minimum $15 worth of food/drink while you attend and please don't forget to pay your bill!
* We will have name tags for everyone! Because of the name tags, we have decided that each attendee will need their own meetup account rather than allow people to sign up with guests. Please ensure your preferred name is on your meetup profile. Please remember to return the name tags at the end of the night.
== PAYMENTS ==
The fee for this event is C$4.99 plus meetup fee and taxes. This fee is non-refundable and the RSVP is non-transferable. Due to various logistical reasons, we no longer permit plus ones when signing up, so all interested attendees will need to sign up through their own meetup account.
