What we’re about
Unplug. Unwind. Connect.
Rediscover the joy of real connection through shared experiences and authentic friendships.
So Cal Explorers Meetup is the antidote to a hyper-digital, disconnected world. We gather for fun, relaxed outings to explore the most iconic, historic, quirky, and lesser-known corners of Southern California—together. Whether it's a walking tour, hike, museum visit, or movie night, our adventures are all about learning, exploring, and enjoying each other's company.
We're not a dating group. We're not a networking group. We're simply a welcoming space for adults to connect, laugh, and build friendships—without pressure, expectations, or hidden agendas.
Our crew is mostly progressive, slightly irreverent 40- to 60-somethings with a love for counter-culture and curiosity. But all open-minded adults (18+) are welcome!
Join us for hiking, historic tours, movies, museum visits, kayaking, presentations, live music, good food, great conversation, and spontaneous fun.
So Cal Explorers is where awkward small talk turns into epic friendships. Come along—we’re saving you a seat.

WHY: The MAK Center for Art and Architecture is a contemporary, experimental, multi-disciplinary center for art and architecture headquartered in three significant architectural works by the Austrian-American architect R.M. Schindler. Offering a year-round schedule of exhibitions and events, the MAK Center presents programming that challenges conventional notions of architectural space and relationships between the creative arts.
The Center is headquartered in the landmark Schindler House (R.M. Schindler, 1922) in West Hollywood; operates a residency program and exhibition space at the Mackey Apartments (R.M. Schindler, 1939) and runs more intimate programming at the Fitzpatrick-Leland House (R.M. Schindler, 1936) in Los Angeles. The MAK Center is the California satellite of the MAK-Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna, Austria and works in cooperation with the FOSH.
The Schindler House, designed by modern architect and Viennese emigre Rudolph M. Schindler, is considered one of the world's finest modern houses. It has influenced and inspired generations of architects worldwide. It redefined notions of public and private, and indoor and outdoor space; and broke new ground in the design and construction of the modern dwelling. Schindler and his wife Pauline regularly hosted artists, musicians, poets. writers, and actors and so their home quickly turned into a center for avant-garde art and inquiry. Today, the Schindler House is regarded as one of Los Angeles's most beloved architectural and cultural landmarks. It is the MAK Center's mission to preserve and promote Schindler's architecture and continue his and Pauline's legacy of artistic and cultural experimentation.17 attendees

Overview
Please join us for a presentation at the crossroads of art and the universe. How has art contributed to the dissemination of cutting-edge astronomical knowledge? What role did the visual arts play in the Space Race in the East, the West, and the Global South? How is the cosmos interpreted in Afrofuturist artwork? Which artworks, according to their makers, were created under the guidance of extraterrestrials? These topics and more will be addressed in a wide-ranging duo- presentation by the Wende’s chief curator Joes Segal and associate curator Emma Diffley.
The program will function as a sneak peek into our fall 2026 exhibition Competing Cosmologies and will be musically introduced by pianist, arranger, composer, educator, and film coach Liz Kinnon, a native of Los Angeles, who has performed all over the world with numerous artists including Dizzy Gillespie, Andy Williams, Barbara Morrison, Sherwood Sledge, Kenia, Octavio Bailly, and Jackie Ryan.
