This will not be a hike for beginners. Please assess your ability to hike 5 miles and to be able to keep up with the group.
Let’s enjoy a summer hike on the hedgehog Trail in West Simsbury. This will be a 5 mile loop. Estimated time to complete will be 2 1/2 to 3 hours. There will be a wonderful view of the Farmington River Valley once we reach the peak. At the halfway point there is a .1 mile hike down to Cathles Falls supplied by Bissell Brook.
The hike will begin with a continual, though, not too strenuous uphill gradient. We will pass through the Masters School and the remnants of an old mill. About halfway up the climb, we will see the remnants of an old ski hill rope tow. Once we reach the summit, we will take a break and enjoy the view. Recommend everyone bring a light snack or lunch with you.
Once we depart the summit we will descend the north face of the trail to Bissell Brook. We will follow Bissell Brook and enter the geological remnants of the last ice age where there will be wonderful rock croppings to gaze upon. We will then skirt Simsbury reservoir on the return leg back to the parking lot.
This will be a moderate pace hike. Please evaluate your abilities before deciding on signing up for the hike. No dogs or individuals under the age of 18. Please have proper hiking gear to include adequate water and nutritional items. The trail will have some wet and moist areas if there has been recent rain.
Keep in mind the parking lot is on the small side so when you arrive please park accordingly. Highly recommend you back into your parking spot. We may have to double park individuals?
The address of the parking lot is 60 Westledge Road Simsbury CT 06070. The entrance to the parking lot is just past the Master School main entrance on the right hand side.
Please arrive by 8:45 or earlier as the parking lot can fill up very quickly and we may have to do some orchestration to get everybody parked. I plan on arriving by 8:30 AM. My vehicle is a bright orange Nissan rogue. If inclined, you may bring a pair binoculars to enjoy the wonderful view once we reach the peak. Look forward to seeing everyone there.
