# Rummy Club Frequently Asked Questions

## About Rummy Club and Rummy

### 1. What is Rummy Club?

Rummy Club is the RummyWorks player community for people who love rummy in all its forms.
It's a place to discover new games, revisit old favorites, and dive deeper into the variations you already love. We connect players with each other, with places to play, with games, and with the knowledge and resources to enjoy them in welcoming spaces online and in person.

### 2. How do I join the Rummy Club community?

Just show up. Come to a Rummy Club event, join the Facebook group, or connect with the community online at rummy-club.org or the r/RummyClub subreddit.
Being part of the Rummy Club community is free. Individual events and experiences may be free or paid.

### 3. What is RummyWorks?

RummyWorks is the company behind Rummy Club. We organize, promote, and host rummy events, create original games like Rumipoo, and sell rummy games through Rummy Depot at rummydepot.com.
Rummy Club is our player community, online and in person.

### 4. What is rummy?

Rummy is a family of pattern-matching games played with cards or tiles. Most revolve around making sets and runs, generally called melds, but objectives, win conditions, and scoring differ across games, so strategy rarely transfers directly from one to the next.
Once you understand common rummy concepts like melds, sets, runs, drawing, and discarding, many new games feel familiar enough to get started while still giving you something new to learn.

### 5. Why rummy?

Because rummy gives you a lifetime of diving deeper into the games you love and discovering new ones without always starting over.
The details change from game to game, so there's always something new to learn. There's a rummy for everyone: deep strategy for the thinkers, easy games for casual play, games children and grandparents can enjoy together, and games carried across cultures and generations.

### 6. What types of rummy games do you play?

All sorts. We play folk games like Gin Rummy, Rummy 500, Canasta, Continental, and Shanghai Rummy, as well as Mah Jongg and commercial games like Rummikub, Five Crowns, Phase 10, Momo's Shanghai Rummy, Scorzo, and Rumipoo, a RummyWorks Original. We sometimes hold events focused on a particular game.
Not sure where to start? Tell a Games Host what you're looking for: big and social, quiet and tactical, quick to learn, or something you can really sink your teeth into. They'll help point you toward the right game and table.

## Learning and Playing

### 7. Do I need to know how to play rummy?

No. Many people learn their first rummy game at Rummy Club.
Sometimes other tabletop game groups expect you to show up already knowing how to play. We don't.
When you arrive, let a Games Host know you're new and tell them about your experience with rummy games, even if the answer is “none.” They'll help you find a good place to start and get you playing.

### 8. What does a Games Host do?

Games Hosts help keep the event running smoothly and make sure players have the support they need.
When you arrive, they can give you the lay of the land, suggest a game or group, and help you get started. Sometimes you'll learn from a Games Host. Sometimes you'll learn from the players around you.
Throughout the event, Games Hosts circulate and check in on the tables. Flag one down whenever you have a question, need help learning a game, or need help resolving a rules dispute.

### 9. How long does it take to learn a rummy game?

It depends on the game. Many take only minutes to pick up, especially once you're familiar with basic concepts like sets and runs.
Good games for beginners include straight Gin, Rummy 500, Five Crowns, Phase 10, Jok-R-Ummy, and Rumipoo. Some games take longer to master, but a Games Host can point you to written instructions and answer questions as you play.

### 10. What is the RummyWorks Book of Rummy Rules?

It's our big red binder of rummy rules, collected over three years and brought to every Rummy Club event. It contains our RummyWorks Way versions of folk games, printed instructions from game publishers, and rules contributed by members of the community.
Folk games often don't have one universally accepted ruleset. Different families, regions, and groups may have played the “same” game differently for generations.
If you're learning a folk game for the first time, we recommend starting with the RummyWorks Way. For a commercial game, we play by the written rules provided by its publisher without adding house rules. If an edge case isn't clear, we defer to the Games Host—not because they're the ultimate authority on the game, but because part of their job is to break the tie, keep the peace, and keep everyone playing.
If you learned a different version at home, you're not wrong. You're just playing the RummyWorks Way while you're with us.
Family rules are worth sharing, too. If everyone at the table agrees, one player is welcome to teach the group their family's variation. Over several play sessions, different players can even take turns teaching the table how their families play.
The important thing is that everyone at the table knows which rules they're playing before the game begins.

### 11. How many players do rummy games need?

It depends on the game. Many of the games we play work with relatively small groups, often two to six players, so we can still get games going when an event is quiet.
When a crowd shows up, we split into more tables and start more games. A Games Host can help match players and get everyone into a game.

## Your First Rummy Club Event

### 12. What should I expect at my first Rummy Club event?

When you arrive, find a Games Host to get your name tag and get oriented.
You'll see small groups gathered around tables, some playing tile games like Rummikub or Mah Jongg and others playing card games, usually with food and drinks from the venue nearby. Some tables keep score and some don't.
You'll meet people of different ages and experience levels, from rummy rookies learning their first game to people who have been playing their favorites for decades.
You don't need to know a game or know anyone before you arrive.

### 13. How long is a Rummy Club event?

Rummy Club events typically run for about three hours. You're welcome to arrive when you can and stay for as much of the event as you'd like.
If an event requires you to arrive at a particular time or stay for the full event, we'll make that clear in the event description. Always check the individual event listing for the scheduled start and end times.

### 14. I'm already an experienced rummy player. Is Rummy Club still for me?

Absolutely. Plenty of our regulars have played for decades, and you'll meet people with a wide range of experience.
If you're looking for a more strategic or competitive game, let a Games Host know. They'll do their best to connect you with other players looking for the same thing, but it depends on who's there and what people want to play that day.
We ask everyone to come with some flexibility. Sometimes that means a newer player joining a more experienced table, and sometimes it means an experienced player slowing things down to welcome someone who's still learning.

### 15. Can a beginner beat an experienced rummy player?

On any given hand, absolutely.
Luck keeps every hand interesting: a first-timer can beat a thirty-year veteran on a single deal. But over enough hands, skill and experience begin to show.

### 16. Do you keep score? Is Rummy Club competitive?

We encourage players to keep score because scoring is part of learning a game's strategy, but each table decides for itself. Some tables keep score and some don't, and we're perfectly happy with either choice.
Keeping score doesn't have to make a game competitive. Some players enjoy tracking the full game while still playing casually and socially. Talk it over with your table and play the way everyone agrees to play.
Rummy Club is community first. There's room for people who love a competitive game and people who simply want to play, talk, and spend time together.

## Rummy Club Events and Locations

### 17. How often are Rummy Club events held?

It varies by location. Our usual starting arrangement with a venue partner is one event each month, but the schedule can vary.
Check the current Rummy Club event calendar at rummy-club.org for upcoming dates and locations.

### 18. How do I find upcoming Rummy Club events?

Check the Rummy Club event calendar at rummy-club.org, our Meetup groups, or the Rummy Club Facebook group. You can also follow RummyWorks on social media for new dates, locations, and special events.

### 19. Does Rummy Club meet near me?

Finding people to play rummy with is often the hard part. It's one of the reasons Rummy Club exists.
We currently hold events in Long Beach and Orange County, California. Check rummy-club.org or our Meetup network for current locations and dates.
If there's nothing near you, tell us where you'd like to see Rummy Club. If you have a favorite local venue in mind, let us know. We'll reach out to them and see if we can build a partnership to bring the magic of Rummy Club to their space.

### 20. Do I need to RSVP for a Rummy Club event?

RSVPs help us plan for the number of players we expect.
Unless an event requires advance registration, walk-ins are welcome. Check the event listing at rummy-club.org for its specific RSVP, registration, and admission details.

## What to Bring, Food, and Friends

### 23. Do I need to bring cards or games to Rummy Club?

No. RummyWorks brings the games and equipment needed to play, including playing cards, tile sets, racks, and written instructions.
You're welcome to bring a favorite game or set from home, but we recommend leaving anything valuable, irreplaceable, or sentimental at home.

### 24. Is food and drink included?

No. Food and drinks are not included with admission.
Most of our venue partners serve food and drinks, and ordering from them helps support the places that give us somewhere to gather and play.

### 25. Can I bring my own food or drinks?

Please don't unless the event listing specifically says you can.
Our venue partners generally don't allow outside food or drinks, so check the event listing at rummy-club.org for details and plan on ordering from the venue.

### 26. Can I bring friends or family to Rummy Club?

Please do. Bring friends, family members, coworkers, or anyone else you'd enjoy playing with.
Check the event description at rummy-club.org first to see whether the event is free or paid, since admission is per player. Some special events may also offer extra prize-drawing entries for bringing friends.

## Families and Children

### 27. Is Rummy Club family-friendly?

Yes. Our public Rummy Club events welcome players of all ages, and everyone is expected to help maintain a friendly, respectful environment.
Children attend with a parent or other responsible adult and can play alongside the rest of the community. Individual events or venues may have different age requirements, so check the event listing for any exceptions.

### 28. Are there rummy games that are good for children and families?

Yes. Most rummy games are approachable for children around seven or eight years old and up, depending on the game and the child. Many can also be played with younger children with a few simple modifications.
We also bring commercial rummy games designed specifically for younger players, including options for children as young as four. Tell a Games Host who's playing, and they'll help your family find a game that fits.
Calculators are welcome at any table, and we won't judge.

### 29. Can I leave my child unattended at a Rummy Club event?

No. Children need to remain with their parent or responsible adult.

### 30. Are there any safety concerns for children?

Rummy Club events are held in public venues. Parents and responsible adults remain responsible for supervising the children in their care throughout the event.

## Special Events and Prizes

### 31. Are there prizes for winning?

Winning a game at your table usually earns you bragging rights.
Some special events also have prize drawings, contests, or other opportunities to win that don't depend on winning a game.

### 32. What are Rummy Club special events?

A few times a year, we hold themed events with extras on top of the regular games, such as contests, prize drawings, themed activities, and other surprises.
Every special event is different, so check the event description at rummy-club.org to see what's planned.

### 33. How do Rummy Club prize drawings work?

It varies by event. Check the event description at rummy-club.org to see how to earn entries and how winners will be selected.

### 34. Is there a dress code for Rummy Club?

No. Come as you are.
Themed events may invite you to dress for the occasion, so check the event description at rummy-club.org for details.

## Photos, Suggestions, and Getting Involved

### 35. Will I be in photos or videos at Rummy Club events?

We may photograph or record Rummy Club events to document and promote Rummy Club and RummyWorks.
If you'd prefer not to appear in photos or video, tell a Games Host when you arrive so they can explain the procedure for that event and help our team respect your preference.

### 36. Can I suggest a rummy game or a new Rummy Club location?

Yes. Tell a Games Host at an event or reach out to us online. We want to hear what you'd like to play and where you'd like to see Rummy Club gather.
If you have a particular venue in mind, tell us about it. We'll reach out to them and see if we can bring the magic of Rummy Club to their space.

## Bring RummyWorks to You

### 37. I own or manage a venue. Can we host Rummy Club events?

We'd love to talk.
RummyWorks partners with restaurants, cafés, breweries, community spaces, and other suitable venues to organize, promote, and host recurring Rummy Club events.
Unlike entertainment where guests primarily watch a stage and leave, Rummy Club gives people a reason to interact. Players meet people, make friends, become regulars, and have a reason to return to the venue between events.
Contact RummyWorks to learn how a venue partnership works.

### 38. I'm planning a private party, corporate event, or other gathering. Can I hire RummyWorks to provide the games and entertainment?

Yes. RummyWorks can bring the Rummy Club experience to your event.
We provide the rummy games, equipment, written instructions, and Games Hosts to help your guests find games, learn how to play, and enjoy playing together. We can provide rummy entertainment for birthday parties, bar and bat mitzvahs, bachelor and bachelorette parties, corporate events and team building, community gatherings, and other private events.
Tell RummyWorks about your event, your guests, and what you're looking for, and we'll work with you to build an experience that fits.

## Games, Accessories, and Merchandise

### 39. Can I buy games, accessories, or Rummy Club merchandise?

At most Rummy Club events, RummyWorks brings a small selection of games, accessories, and merchandise available for purchase. If you see something you'd like—or discover a game you want to take home—ask a Games Host what's available.
Active Rummy Club Insider members receive 10% off games, accessories, and merchandise sold by RummyWorks in person at Rummy Club events.
