About us

We are retirees or people who can join in on weekday daytime events. Walking easy trails, biking easy trails, walking tours, exploring museums and interesting sites . Trying to do somewhat active things and not sedentary stuff. Basically I identify a date and venue and you show up. No age range but please be aware of any physical issues. Everyone is responsible for their own safety and actions. I know many belong to other Meet Ups and do other activities so if there is something you think might work for RFAR please let me know. The goal here is to make sure recess never ends.

Meet 9:45 am Asheville's Best Gem mining 26 Sardis road. Near the Outlet Mall.Meeting early so we can get in as a special group at 10:00 AM . They do not open until 11 AM so we are getting in as our own group. We. will get a 15 minute overview of gems and mining. See a fossilized dinosaur egg and other unique /rare gems/stones .Ore buckets $10, $25, $50, $75 and $100. You get to keep what you find and if valuable they can cut it for $ if you want. Note...$ 70 to enter the grounds if you don't have the annual pass. Meet 10 AM at Lagoon area parking lot. Please familiarize yourself as this is a small parking area by the lagoon and river.See photo of the parking area. Not any of the big parking areas. Look for RFAR signs.Ask at the gate for the road to take. There is a unique view from this area of the estate house. **Deer Park Trail Walk....**There is a hill so I would say this could be considered moderate. At the top of the hill is the South Terrace of the house with restrooms. . Will head down to the Bass Pond too for a short time . However you can stop and turn around if you want. You do not have to go the 2.5 miles round trip.. You can't get lost. Bring picnic lunch to leave in your car. Should be able to eat in lagoon area in your chair. No picnic tables. Meet 10 AM at the Sports Complex 832 Ecusta Road Brevard . This is outside of the town area. Restrooms nearby. Bike about 8-10 MPH( or less due to hills etc) for about 12 miles total. Ride paved path to downtown Brevard. Some elevations but we will stop for rests and water. Bring picnic lunch to leave in you car and we can eat in the park. Details later. Since you are in the area you may want to explore Downtown area and the Music Center. ( We will be doing a downtown walk Oct 2 to look for elusive white squirrels .) Hope you can make it. Meet 10 AM in NC Arboretum old greenhouse parking lot. Drive past the main parking lots and turn onto Greenhouse Way and go about a 1/2 mile. We are not meeting at the main building complex....Look for RFAR signs and t-shirt I will be wearing .Walk about 2 and 1/2 hours on trails. For about 3.3 miles. The guest leader is John W.Thanks.... Bring water and wear comfortable shoes.. Walking stick is good. Admission is $25 per car. If you know others you can car pool and split the fee. I bought the annual pass $60 as nice to visit several times a year. You can apply the $25 towards the annual pass that day.( RFAR will be doing more events here). Music at the Vineyard - Steve Weams & The Caribbean Cowboys Join us Sunday, August 2 from 1-4 PM .Steve Weams & The Caribbean Cowboys Band have been entertaining audiences for over 34 years. They play primarily in Western North Carolina, but have traveled from Key West, Florida to New York City & through the British Virgin Islands. The band plays a wide variety of music. While their main influence is the stylings of Jimmy Buffett, expect to hear music from other troubadours such as Peter Mayer, Scott Kirby, Jesse Winchester, Fingers Taylor and more! Come for the best of Classic and Southern Rock, Rhythm & Blues, Reggae, Beach Tunes, Country, and last but not least, a few classics such as Frank Sinatra and Elvis. You might even hear a few Caribbean Cowboys Band originals!
