About us
Going to the movies used to be a thing I did by myself. But lately I've rediscovered how much fun it is to go with friends and to talk about it with them afterwards. So, here we are!
Providence Movie Club is a group where we'll go to a movie and then grab a drink after it's over to hang out and chat. I'm pretty omnivorous with my movie taste, so one week we could see something at the Avon, and the next be front and center at Morbius. Post-movie will change as well and hit bars, coffee shops, breweries, boba tea places, etc.
Don't worry about being a film expert or anything. I imagine conversations will go like most book clubs where you talk about the book for seven minutes and then everyone drops it.
See you at the movies!

Movie Club Mixer at Black Sheep
Black Sheep, 397 Westminster St, Providence, RI 02903, USA, Providence, RI, USIt's been a while since we've had a normal Movie Club Mixer. I'm excited to get back to them because they're some of our most popular events. And for our November one, we're staying close to our AS220 base and heading to the bar on the corner, Black Sheep!
The event will start at Black Sheep at 7:00pm on Thursday, November 12th. It'll go on as long as people are around, though the official end time will be 10:00pm. I'll have a pile of name tags on a table for everyone to help differentiate who's there for the mixer and who's just there. Black Sheep has alcoholic and non-alcoholic options, as well as some delicious food options from BunFun.
The mixers are a great way to familiarize yourself more with the group and its members. As a reminder, there's no movie portion, only the hanging out part. Old members, new members, and anyone who has wanted to check out the group is welcome! It's just a space for people to socialize, no pressure. See you there!

The Pizza Principal at Uptown Theater
Uptown Theater, 270 Broadway, Providence, RI 02903, USA, Providence, RI, USKirk Benttinen from RI Docs is a local filmmaker who's been a great supporter of Movie Club. His newest feature, The Pizza Principal, is premiering in November at Uptown Theater. I've always wanted to do more local filmmaker type events, so what better time than now?
After the unexpected popularity of his local pizza reviews, a pizza-obsessed vice principal from Coventry high school sets out to review 40 Rhode Island pizzerias in 30 days, and fulfill his dream of becoming a professional writer. This film, directed by Rhode Island native Kirk Benttinen, takes you on a journey through the kitchens and dining rooms of mom and pop pizzerias all across Rhode Island, following Tim's journey and celebrating the stories, people, and recipes behind some of the best pizza in the country.
But it's more than a night out at the movies, it's a neighborhood-activation event. Before the show, present your ticket to participating bars and restaurants in Federal Hill for drink and food specials. The show will kick off with several of their RI Docs shorts, all films about Rhode Islanders and their remarkable lives. They'll have surprise performances from local artists, as well as a Q & A after the film with the filmmaker and subjects from The Pizza Principal. After the show, there will be a pizza afterparty in the neighborhood where the pizzerias from the film will be slinging pies and mingling with guests.
And guess what? We'll get a Movie Club discount based on how many people attend. I'm still working on the logistics with Kirk, but I'll put it in the comments when it's finalized.
Join us on Saturday, November 20th for an 8:00pm screening of The Pizza Principal at Uptown Theater. Meet in the Uptown lobby at 7:45pm. I'll get there early and put in here where we're meeting. At 8:00pm, we'll head into the theater. Afterwards, for anyone interested, we'll hit up the aforementioned afterparty. Though I don't know where it's at yet. Again, keep tabs on the event page for more details as we get closer.
This is a ticketed event, and tickets are $40 each. I'm working with Kirk on a Movie Club discount, as well as a way for us all to sit together, so stay tuned. If you want to buy your tickets anyway, go here! Reach out if you have any questions.
