I missed prior Kili events, can I come? Yes - but message me thru meetup or look for me RSVPd on the Sunday evening hikes - so we can connect and catch you up. Would love to have more join us.
Are you the leader? No, We are going through a company so all your payments and liability releases are with them.

- Depart for Trek on Sep 25 taking the 8 day Lemosho trail.
+Optional add on Safari which returns us on a night flight arriving USA on Saturday, Sep 5.

When all other parks are jammed to capacity during Labor Day we will be camping on our own private lands with a private lake. We will have proximity to 3 major rivers offering rafting, kayaking opportunities on the Wolf, Oconoto & Peshtigo Rivers. Excellent proximity to destinations in the Nicolet National Forest.

We are Meetup volunteers who plan fun trips to build community and have fun outside! We rent private facilities exclusively for our groups use, the costs charged to you are kept intentionally low that cover overhead and associated lodging costs. Through the generosity of the organizer 50% of the trip is underwritten by the trip organizer. The balance of the costs are shared amount the participants to keep trip costs low. As part of the registration process we ask guests to sign up for camp duties to contribute to the success of the trip and help contain costs. Typical camp duties include cooking, cleaning, fire tending, and recreation leading.
This trip is for you if you:

• Enjoy hiking, camping, paddling and other outdoor and indoor activities or do nothing at all.
• Skills, Willingness & Ability: If you have skills to contribute to the operation of our camp, in the areas of cooking, recreation leadership, maintenance and can stay for the completion of your duty.
• Easy: All of this is easy to do and we have been doing it for over 15 years
• Rain or Shine: Our trips progress rain or shine. We have alternate activities based on weather.

dear hiking friends--

today's hike features a cross section of the history of the Indiana Dunes region during the 19th and early 20th centuries. we have taken this hike every year since 2002, except for 2020.

please check the weather before departure and have appropriate clothing and equipment https://weather.com/weather/today/l/46301:4:US . bring along a lunch which we will eat on the trail, plus enough water (one quart minimum).

this hike will have a shorter and a longer option. depending on which you choose to take. you can make these choices on the spot depending on your endurance, the weather, or your whims, once on the trail. more details on the exact route will follow as the date approaches.

remember, this is a fee area--you must DISPLAY A National Park Service PERMIT to park here--so before you come to the lot, make sure you study the rather Byzantine and non-user-friendly fee structure at the National Park website

i'm not sure how much they enforce this off season, or what the fines are, but be informed and beware.

this is a complex route, with lots of unexpected twists and turns--if you get ahead of Erin or Jonathan, make sure to stop whenever you come to a junction with another trail or road, or in any place where the trail is ambiguous or confusing. also, make sure you know where your car is parked.

i also encourage you all to take and post pictures to the site. if you don't know how to post to the site, text pictures to me, and i will post them.
i decided to tweak our route so that we hit more of the points of historic interest first, and moved the long walk across the prairie, over the river, and through the woods to later in the hike.

we will gather near the restrooms off the parking lot, and wait till 11:20 CT for all to arrive. then we will turn right at the valley's edge and walk a short distance till we come to the Chellberg Farm.

this is a preserved farmstead which was owned by Swedish immigrants to the region, and run in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. there usually are animals in the farmyard and the barn.

after that, we will ascend some bridges and stairs up a streambed and across a road to the Bailly Family Cemetery. it is quite elaborate for a pioneer graveyard, with a stonework mound and a tall wooden cross, and carved gravestones with passages from the Bible and the Apocrypha.

we will tarry there awhile, then cross Oak Hill rd, and begin the west leg of the Bailly-Chellberg trail. after a short distance, we will come to a junction where you can make a choice of the longer or shorter route.

more details on the exact route will follow closer to the hike date.
