In the natural world, there is no such thing as waste! A healthy ecosystem operates as a “closed loop” where the byproducts of one organism become essential nutrients for another. It’s how seemingly lowly worm poop and fallen leaves can turn into the richest soil that supports all those luscious veggies that we love!
How can we bring this circular approach to our gardens and farms, and move away from "throughput" systems that create garbage?
Join local experts to dive into the wild world of composting, nutrient cycling, and regenerative agriculture. (Bio's below!). They will each present a different aspect of a “circular economy” and then we’ll open the discussion up to a lively Q&A.
This event is free and open to all, with English and Spanish translation.

PANELIST BIO’S
Elizabeth Marks works with farmers and landowners to improve soil health and biological diversity on their land. She recently retired from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) after a 20-year career where she served as a regional soil health specialist for the Northeast. She currently is a registered Technical Service Provider with NRCS to do grazing plans, plan biochar projects, and collect soil samples. She is also an expert on climate change adaption in agriculture. A certified Holistic Management (HM) educator, she teaches classes on soil health, grazing, how to “read” the land, financial planning, and other topics for Holistic Management International and the Cornell Small Farms Program. Gabino Bautista is a Latino immigrant farmer living in Wappingers Falls, NY. Gabino comes from a farming tradition in Mexico and has more than ten years of experience in agriculture. Gabino completed training with Cornell Small Farms and Cornell Cooperative Extension in soil management, farm finances, and sustainable production. Together with his family, he started Green Life Family Farm, a diversified vegetable farm where they grow a variety of vegetables, berries, flowers, and eggs from heritage hens. Their vision is to establish a sustainable farm that nurtures healthy soil and healthy food. Green Life Family Farm recently celebrated three years of formal production. They sell at farmers markets in NYC through GrowNYC and collaborate with a local food bank, ensuring that low-income families also have access to healthy, local food. His farm is a family business in which all family members participate, and he hopes his children will continue the farm into the future.
Eileen Banyra is the Founder of the Community Compost Co. and Hudson Soil Co, both are local women-owned businesses that seek to “close the loop” on waste. In 2013, Eileen established Community Compost Co.with a mission to address food waste, combat climate change, and improve soil health through the power of composting. And then in 2016, she founded Hudson Soil Co. to distribute the premium compost produced by the Community Compost Co. Eileen’s businesses collect organic materials from communities across the Hudson Valley, NY and Northern New Jersey, and transport them to a facility in Kerhonkson, NY, where they are transformed into high-quality compost products. This process not only reduces environmental impact but also supports healthier plants and fosters more resilient, sustainable communities. Betty Bastidas is an Ecuadorian-American award-winning filmmaker, media educator, and land steward with over 15 years of experience working alongside immigrant and BIPOC communities. She completed a regenerative farming apprenticeship through the Ecological Citizens Project in 2022 and currently serves as Executive Director of Newburgh Sanctuary, where she integrates ecological restoration, food justice, youth workforce development, and arts and cultural programming to advance community well-being at Crystal Lake. Betty founded the Sanctuary’s Youth Apprenticeship Program and Youth Parks Media Team, creating paid leadership pathways for local youth in regenerative agriculture, media-making, and civic storytelling. She serves on the Steering Committee for the Newburgh Wants a Park campaign and on the Communications and Storytelling Committee for the Quassaick Creek Greenway, a trail network initiative advancing environmental access and walkability in Newburgh. She holds a Master’s degree from the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism and a Bachelor of Science from New York University.
