The Blizzard by Vladimir Sorokin
Chapel Hill Public Library, 100 Library Drive, Chapel Hill, NC, USJoin us on August 16th as we discuss Vladimir Sorokin's 2010 short novel, The Blizzard.
The novel follows Dr. Platon Ilich Garin, a provincial physician who urgently needs to deliver a life-saving vaccine to the remote village of Dolgoye, which a mysterious epidemic has ravaged. The journey becomes an epic, nightmarish odyssey through a relentless Russian blizzard.
We will start by discussing Pushkin's short story The Bliaard. Sorokin's title is a direct homage.
And, is the blizzard itself a metaphor for Russia itself?
You can find Jamey Gambrell's translation on Amazon here, at Barnes & Noble here, and at local retailers. You can get a free version of an English translation of Pushkin's original short story online here and here,
Known for his provocative and satirical works. Sorokin is one of the most popular postmodern writers of Russian literature. Immediately after the invasion of Ukraine, he criticized Putin, comparing him to Ivan the Terrible. Sorokin currently lives in Berlin.
Mark H. Will lead our discussion of this well-praised novel from 2010.
