Learn how to play Hong Kong-style mahjong in a non-competitive setting. This club is open to people wishing to learn how to play mahjong with no prior experience. Some members of this club have attended previous meetings and returned to practice their skills before attempting to play more advanced mahjong events around LA. For beginners or those needing a refresher, an optional introductory mahjong presentation and demonstration will be given at 6:30 PM. Most people are able to play (and win!) mahjong on their own after this presentation. Guided gameplay with other new players is offered after the presentation.
Due to the need for 4 people per mahjong table and to avoid people reserving a seat but failing to show up, we cannot offer refunds. If you plan to attend the class, please be on time as lessons will promptly begin at 6:30 PM. Feel free to reserve a seat as early as 6:00 PM.
Parking: There is no parking offered at our location, so please be prepared to find street parking or use a paid parking lot. The most affordable parking lot is $5 at Mandarin Plaza (986 N Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90012). They close at 10 PM. An additional paid parking lot is on Broadway next to Wonder Bakery. Metered street parking is free after 8 PM. Due to events in Chinatown, parking lots and street parking are sometimes full, so please be prepared during major holidays and popular events.
Transportation: The LA Metro Chinatown Station services the A Line lightrail and is located a block away from our club. Several popular LA Metro bus lines serve Chinatown Plaza and will drop you off on the same block as our club. Some of the buses include: 4, 45, 81, 90, 94, DASH Lincoln Heights/Chinatown Clockwise and the DASH B.
The $16 fee will be used to maintain the space and purchase more mahjong equipment. If you wish to pay via another method, please message us or message Peter directly.

We are gathering at the LA Chinatown coworking space Studious Collective.**ABOUT US**
With a mission to create intergenerational and intercultural community building, Palabras Literary Salon is a gathering inspired by our elders of civil rights consciousness raising and Maya Angelou’s salons in the Harlem Renaissance. Our facilitator, Jen Cheng, brings home cooking and light snacks to the event as we build bridges by breaking bread together. We sit in a non-hierarchical circle, without a stage. This is not an open mic as we have a curated guest reader list representing a diverse community. Talk story and witnessing are ways we can build better understanding of our humanity. We encourage new work and fresh perspectives.Palabras Literary Salon is a BIPOC-centered reading series that includes award-winning authors as well as emerging voices. It was started in the fall of 2022 and is held at venues in Boyle Heights and Chinatown in our efforts to attract economic development to immigrant neighborhoods of Los Angeles. If you want a brief introduction to our vibe, check us out on this recording of KPFK’s Poets Cafe radio show. or the De Los (LA Times) shout out here.
Note: This is a third party community event posted on behalf of Palabras Literary Salon and it's organizers. This is not a Studious event. Please contact Jen Cheng (organizer) if you have any questions about this event.
